Sagrada Familia Barcelona Spain

Sagrada Familia is such an iconic landmark of Barcelona that I don't think you could miss it when you travel to the city. It was one of the first things that we did when we arrived and definitely the site that still holds the most standout memory of our trip for me.

20220519_161814~2.jpg

The massive structure dominates the surrounding landscape and can be seen from quite some distance away. It just sort of appears through the trees as you approach it from a distance.

20220519_162108~2.jpg

I was impressed by it right from the get go, right when I first laid eyes on it.

20220519_162310~2.jpg

The sheer size of it along with its distinctive architecture style make it a truly unique building.

20220519_170612~2.jpg

The original design of the cathedral was supposedly much different though. It was first designed by architect Francisco de Paula del Villar in 1882 and was basically meant to look just like a standard European gothic church; big of course, but much like any other that you see across the continent dating back to that time period.

20220519_163402~2.jpg

However, shortly after it was designed, Paula del Villar was replaced by a new architect by the name of Antoni Gaudi, a man who was begining to gather a lot of recognition the field of architecture and design.

20220519_170715~2.jpg

Gaudi redesigned the cathedral to the version it is today and construction began the following year, in 1883. It continued long after Gaudi's death in 1926 and even continues to this day. source for above info.

20220519_171959~2.jpg

20220519_172005~2.jpg

You can see that it's still under construction in some of the photos.

20220519_172043~2.jpg

It's been under construction for so long, more than 100 years, that one wonders if it will ever be completed?

20220519_170546~2.jpg

Only time will tell, I suppose.

20220519_170643~2.jpg

It's not surprising that in many places you can actually see the difference between the old work and the new.

20220519_170635~2.jpg

By the time they finish the building they will likely have to go back to the original sections and begin restoration work.

20220519_163351~2.jpg

I've noticed that a lot of the very intricate detail work of many gothic cathedrals in France from that time period, often show signs of deterioration from the rain and other elements. There is a sort of melting effect in places exposed to the elements and the finer details often end up looking like wax slowly melting in the heat.

20220519_163427~2.jpg

In the photo above you can see that they have already begun to restore certain decorative features.

The Interior

20220519_171504~2.jpg

Entry into the cathedral wasn't cheap at 26 euros, but I did think that it was worth it to go inside, at a minimum to satisfy my curiosity.

20220519_163911~2.jpg

In the photo above you can see me marveling at the height and design of the ceiling.

20220519_163729~2.jpg

I read somewhere (probably from a plaque inside) that Gaudi drew a lot of inspiration for the design of Sagrada Familia from different things found in nature.

20220519_171132~2.jpg

The interior columns of the buildings were made to look like tree trunks and the ceiling was made to look like their canopy.

20220519_171125~2.jpg

I thought that it definitely had that look about it.

20220519_163741~2.jpg

In the photos you can see the branches of the tree stemming off from the main trunk.

20220519_163644~2.jpg

I also thought that the ceiling looked a lot like flowers, maybe daisy's or something similar.

20220519_170944~2.jpg

20220519_163635~2.jpg

20220519_171047~2.jpg

The stained glass was an interesting feature as well.

20220519_170928~2.jpg

On one side of the cathedral the glass was colored in reds, yellows and oranges while on the other it was covered in different shades of blue and green.

20220519_170937~2.jpg

20220519_170849~2.jpg

The effect created a sort of visiual polarity with one side feeling warm and the other feeling cool.

20220519_170857~2.jpg

If I'm remembering correctly, I believe that the colored glass was meant to represent the blue of water and the orange represented the sun. It created a neat visiaul affect, regardless of the intended meaning.

20220519_171424~2.jpg

The church is also a museum dedicated to Antoni Gaudi and the construction of the building itself. In the basement there are a ton of information boards and photos of the various construction stages, as well as different plaster scale models of various design features found throughout. Something that I thought was neat was this inverted model made from suspended bags of sand. I found it to be pretty unique and unlike any model I had ever seen before. It still kind of boggles my mind when I try to image how this would be helpful when designing something. You kind of have to think in reverse and rotate the image in your head. I find that very cool and strange at the same time.

20220519_170220~2.jpg

Between the church above and the museum below you could really spend some time in Sagrada Familia. We probably spent a little over an hour taking it all in but we didn't read everything contained on all of the information boards. You could easily kill two hours in there if you wanted and if you're big into museums and architecture. Even if reading is not your thing though, I think that the cathedral it's definitly worth checking it out. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Well thats it for now. If you are interested in seeing more of my trip to Spain than stay tuned, theres more to come. Until next time, thanks for stopping by.

This brought back fond memories of my week in Barcelona many years ago. I was enthralled by the masterpiece of architectural designs. They are something to behold for sure!

I'm glad that you got to see it. You're right about it being a masterpiece.

I love this building and all his other work around the city. I am a bit of a tight arse so wasn't stumping up 26 euros to queue for hours. thanks for being free and easy with your dosh and letting me eventually see inside 👍

That's fair. There actually wasn't a long queue for us when we went. We just walked right in. It was busy inside as you can see from the photos but no long lines for some reason.

some guys have all the luck!

Haha true. It's usually not me though. Covid helped a lot with reducing tourists and people in general at a lot of sites though

good point well made

Such a stunning piece of art. I love visiting it.
I saw it first when I was a young teenager with a school trip. Later when I traveled to Barcelona alone around my mid teens. As an adult I only visited it once, not that long ago. And could already see many differences. It just makes an impact on everybody.
It is so large… so many details, so much to see. The colours of the glass. Beautiful.
Great captures @leaky20 😊😎 familiar corners popped up.
Thanks for sharing.
Have a great evening and Tuesday 👋🏻

Yeah you must have definitely seen some changes and additions built over the years. That's kind of cool to be able to see some transitions. Maybe next time either of us goes to see it, it will be complete 🤞

Yep, I did.
Hope next time it will be finished indeed. But something tells me it is a work in progress forever 😉🤓 we will see…

Faaanncy. Does the €26 entry fee include a confessional?

Haha I'm sure it does if you want to wait in line for it. Are you feeling guilty these days?

No more than usual.

So you probably don't know if forgiveness there is worth more than a free entry.

Haha I don't believe that it is 😂

It is freaking beautiful though, so totally worth the money. Almost Elvish! Amazing...

Yeah, definitely beautiful. To me it's like an underwater castle, like it belongs in the Little Mermaid or something.

Wow what a great building. I don't remember seeing the inside before, so interesting and that stained glass is so unique with certain colors and each side. Great post!

The inside was pretty incredible for its uniqueness. Definitely unlike any other church I've been to.

😍😍😍😍these buildings are amazing

Yeah it's a pretty incredible feat of human ingenuity

I love these views! really inside it becomes unreal, the shape and colors that give the stained glass windows are amazing, what was Mr. Gaudi fed on to have these things in mind? Iconic and incredible. Excellent publication! 👏

Yeah, he definitely had a unique mind and way of seeing things.

Wow! The architecture of the old cathedrals and castles of the world never cease to amaze me. The detail on this building is so intricate. I have never been to visit but I would spring for the entrance fee just to stand in awe at the wonders that unfold. Much more grand than modern architecture. It's magical!

Yeah it's definitely a special building, a very unique one. It was a bit expensive to enter compared to other churches in other countries but it was worth it to me since it's so different

Had the chance to visit Sagrada Familia in 2019 and spent so many hours exploring it! Definitely a must-see for anyone out there!

Yeah I agree. It's a special building for sure. I'm glad you got to see it

The interior looks like giant sunflowers in gold and beige. Awesome! 😍

Yeah I thought that it looked like a flower as well

The Sagrada Familia looks quite impressive, once in the city I will definitely visit it. The fact that it wasn't originally planned that way is interesting. The photos are great with the colors and exposure. Many greetings!

Yeah it's worth checking out if you go to Barcelona. It's definitely a unique building with an interesting history

Wow! I can't help myself but to fall inlove with this amazing place that you shared. ♥️ I really love all the detail!Thank you for sharing a glimpse of a magical place like this. 😍

Yeah it's a pretty cool spot for sure. Very unique bit of architecture. Thanks for stopping by

breathtaking photos, that Structure is massive! wow👍

Yeah it's pretty huge. Surprisingly big

Wow Sagrada Familia, It is a very beautiful place infact it looks like all those spooky castle we see in the movie and sometimes i think all those are fiction but with these photos of Sagrada Familia taken by @leaky20 maybe the movies ain't fiction, I can see you had a pretty nice tour there when i eventually get to Barcelona I will visit Sagrada Familia.

Yeah it does sort of have a spooky castle look, or maybe an under water castle made of coral. That's what I see in it anyway.

Wow, I've never seen such beautiful pictures of the interior, especially the stained glass effects. I wonder how much it depends on external light conditions.

Gaudi was true genius, my favorite architect of all time.

By the way, I've read the prophecy that the moment Sagrada Familia is finished will be a sign that WWIII is about to start :o)

That's a strange and interesting prophecy. Hopefully it doesn't come true lol.

Wow!... Top levep shots!... Lovely views!... Thanos for sharing!

I'm glad you liked them, thanks.

Traveling transports us to another dimension, amazing are the constructions that exist around the world and one of them is the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, I'm glad you could enjoy it that way and show such amazing images. 1Sal2

Thanks for stopping by and checking it out. 😊

Really very beautiful and excellent photographs😻

Thanks I'm glad you liked them.

Indeed, the Sagrada Familia is the emblem of Spain, my God what architecture.

Yeah it's a very iconic building for sure

It looks awesome. I'd love to see it one day

I hope that you get to 😁

Wow!!! so beautiful

:o wow que impresionante es desde afuera y por dentro es totalmente alucinante, estan muy bonitas tus fotos, saludos

It's a really beautiful location indeed.

It is an impressive work of mankind, thank you for giving us these beautiful images. Greetings.

I agree 😁👍

It's a fantastic place. It was one of the first places I dropped off to visit way back when I went there. I was so impressed, the inside as you have captured is hugely tall. I think it will always be an in progress piece, is part of its charm!

Yeah it's a pretty cool and charming building for sure. I think I read somewhere that is a very controversial building in the city as well. A lot of people aren't happy that construction has been going on for so long and how much it was costing the city. I believe that tourism dollars pay for it nowadays but many people aren't happy about all the tourists either.

I can imagine why, it's a hugely popular tourist destination. For British folk it's only a short hop in a place and weekend visits are quite common. I can imagine the cost and the constant work would be annoying though

Yeah there were a ton of British folk in the city when we were there. I heard their accent everywhere we went. It's a big party city and they get a lot of bachelor/Bachelorette parties. We saw several while we were there

Haha, that is why I have been twice! It's probably just the Brits that they don't like🤣

🤣😂
