Picnic at Pangilatan Peak

in Pinmapple2 years ago (edited)

Nowadays, in a time when smartphones and other advanced technology take over our lives, going outside has become a much needed activity. As an introvert, going outside means going to places that are not flocked with big crowds; someplace that would fuel my spontaneity and bring out the creativity in me; a place that would not drain the energy I have but instead recharge it.

Hello there, wholesome reader!

In this post, let me take you to an adventure in the southern part of Cebu, Philippines.

Aside from the beautiful white-sand beaches in the province, Cebu has also a lot of mountain peaks that look over the magnificent views around the province. For this adventure, we did not need to go too far to witness a breathtaking sight above the urbanized life.

One random day, I and my workmates, planned to have a picnic at one of the peaks in the City of Naga, Cebu, Philippines. Situated approximately 900 feet above sea level is Pangilatan Peak - a peak with 360° views.

The Adventure Begins!

Our meeting place was at the corner of the Inayagan Barangay Hall. There, we hailed two habal-habal (motorcycles) since there are four of us, hence, two persons riding each motorcycle. Most of the ride was smooth with the paved road until we reached Sitio Pangilatan. It was a bit bumpy but it was only for a short time until we reached our jumping point. Anyway, what's an adventure without the bumpy thrills, right?

Our hike started right at the foot of the peak, where a basketball court can be found. Prior to the hike, I did a little research and found that it was a beginner-friendly and easygoing hike - the reason we chose to have a picnic here, too.

First stopover after a 5-minute hike from the foot.

Almost there!

Finally reached the top!

As working people who are stuck sitting in front of a computer for 8 straight hours, 5 days a week, we were already breathless even though we were still halfway. Although it did not take us 30 minutes to reach the peak, real hikers might only take 10 to 15 minutes to hike up.

The Splendor at the Peak

If the hike up made us breathless, the view at the top was absolutely breathtaking and made us speechless! I am not even exaggerating here.

A dramatic picture of me at the peak.

The view at the peak.

At the top, you can see where the mountains and the sea meet each other: the lush of greens and the different hues of blue. This was what we needed after conquering countless stressors at work.

Picnic at the Peak.. and a few things we regret

The beauty at the peak was unquestionable! However, there were a few things we regret with this adventure. If you plan to hike up Pangilatan Peak, please continue reading and learn from the mistakes we've made.

I hope you won't judge us, but our meeting time was right after lunch. Yes, you've read that right - when the sun was directly above us with its harsh rays of light and heat. By the way, there was little to no shade at the peak since the trees got devastated by the supertyphoon Odette that greatly hit the province.

Trying to hide away from the sun with a blanket and an umbrella, lol!

I swear, this was the biggest mistake we made. If you plan to go to any peak, please please don't go during noontime. The best time should be before or during sunrise (or sunset, for your camp night plans).

Since it was a picnic, we brought foods up the peak. Although we only brought finger foods, I would not recommend to bring too much, bring just enough food for you and your group. Also, don't forget to bring water for rehydration purposes!

We brought too much for us to finish and sadly, some of the food just went to waste, especially the fruits that we think got too dry because of the heat.

Despite these things, we still enjoyed our little adventure and the view at the top. For a while, we had the chance to forget about the big problems in life, and focus on how bigger the beauty of the world is before our eyes.

It's heartwarming how nature can make us feel, breathing its fresh air and enjoying the best views it can offer. That's why, we should also help nature through our own little ways. The simplest way is to be a responsible traveller and bring any trash with you when you leave the place.

Thank you so much for joining me, virtually, in this adventure!

I'll take delight in writing for you again soon. See you around!

Love,
Sam ♡

That looks like a great place to have a picnic. Being from Canada with a lot of Filipino friends, it surprised me to learn that people in the Philippines avoid the sun to avoid a suntan. In Canada, everybody does the opposite. They seek out the sun to get a suntan. It is fascinating how cultures can differ. Maybe it is because over there there is so much sun and over here we have seasons of limited sun.

Hello there! I appreciate you leaving a comment on my post. I actually love the sun! It's just that, beyond 10am, it can really be harsh and could greatly affect your skin health. That's one reason we avoid the sun, especially at noon time. But I'd agree with you that maybe why most Filipinos avoid the sun is because we've already experienced so much of it in our whole lives 😅

As I watched your photos progress up the peak one thought kept me going. How will these girls survive the heat up there LOL.
