Connection and togetherness

I think about the turmoil in the world, fear, uncertainty, greed and hubris, and believe more connection and togetherness, more unity, is required. It begins within each of us through self-reflection and honesty, and through taking the ownership to extend it outwardly to others - The habit will form - like ripples on a pond.

I'm not able to solve the worlds' problems despite having a few ideas on how to deal with a few issues that would make a difference. I guess my methods would be a little heavy-handed, quite sudden and final, which might not be the right way to go...but how long can society decline before it meets the bottom and begins sinking into the slush, mud and slime found there and, finally, into oblivion?

I get it, many people want to, and do, hold hope that things will turn around and change will come, but are we doing enough, quickly enough? I'll hold my hand up high and say no we're not. You can disagree, I don't mind.

I don't know when the decline began

I wonder if the decline started the first time a caveman picked up a stick or rock and hit someone else with it because he wanted what that person had. I wonder if it began because humanity found cognitive thought and, therefore, greed. I guess, in that case, it began when the Neanderthal man began to evolve into who we are today, Homo Sapiens.

No matter when it began though, it continues today and I believe it may be is accelerating at an alarming rate.

Like I said above, I'm not able to solve the worlds' problems, I don't even know what they all are; I'm just a knucklehead after all...However I have a belief that we have never been more disconnected, in a human to human way, than ever before and that is partly responsible.

I'm not picking on social medias here, however it's through those that disconnection can come. I think it's because we see what our friends and family are doing online and feel we are connected rather than actually connecting in person. Just one aspect I guess.

Sure, we can reach across the world through social meadia and the internet and that can bring us a little "closer", but I know so many who live in close proximity and don't truly connect due to their connection on social media.

I'm sitting at a cafe writing this and, looking around, I see at least three couples sitting at their respective tables all on their respective phones and not engaging with the person across from them. Is that a valid connction?

Slowing it and turning it around

Can we stop the decline; in fact, can we even slow it down? Again, I'm not sure. I think that's a question we must each ask ourselves and then act upon the answer. I guess I'd have to say it's possible, but not probable though. I feel we can all make a difference however we'd need to see the problems, acknowledge that they're there, and then take some steps. It's those first steps that each of us are able to make because, in my opinion, they need to happen internally, within each of us, before moving outward.

We all have the ability to evaluate our thoughts and actions and, if we choose to, can change our attitudes, improve them, and then push them outwardly through our behaviours and actions. If enough of us do it, those attitudes and actions begin to touch others and, if repeated over and over, connection and togetherness can result. With enough doing this...well, I think that'd start to move things in the right direction.

I'll be honest and say I think society, humankind is doomed. I'm not saying now, next week or year, but nothing lasts forever. I also think we can't continue in the same way we are now for very long without disasterous results in the future and I don't think enough is being done, by anyone.

Sure, there's some focus on climate change and renewable energy, but money still rules the day on that front and change is painfully slow. What about people though? What are we doing to promote connection and togetherness between humankind and a better place for all of us to call home? Is Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, TikTok and the like promoting it...or are they there to make the super-wealthy more wealthy at the expense of society, and people feel connected, but they actually aren't? I don't know the answer and neither do you I suppose. We can surmise however.

We can certaibly all make a decision to take the actions that will promote a little more connection and togetherness between ourselves and those around us and if done enough, maybe humankind might buy a little more time.

What are your thoughts on the situation and what steps are you taking to self-reflect, maintain or change your attitude or create better social-habits, relationships, and connections?

It doesn't look good.... does it? Seems we are slowly sliding down that slippery slope into a terrible place.

It makes me sad that the bad things get all the press. There is so much good still here, yet somehow, the good folks don't seem to be making the news or voting out the bad folks that seem to be in control when it comes to politics and world relationships. I know the world can't run on a "lollipop lane" mentality, but there is a LOT of room between what is going on now and a better life for all.

We can only do what we can only do. Maybe the good people need to start a trend to fill all the net and news spaces with good and positive things and try to help push things in a better direction. We can only control ourselves, but if we could get others on board, at least something good might happen.... or at least MORE good.

I've said that and I don't have a plan to make it all work, but it is something to think on.

You're right, there's so many good things that are just simply ignored. I'm not one to want to see all the warm and fuzzy stuff, I'm pragmatic and know that life isn't always nice, but it seems we're fed so much negativity which is divisive and destructive. I guess it suits corporations to keep the populace in a state of unrest, uncertainty and somewhat depressed.

I tend to avoid negative people and situations, my way of denying it I guess, getting on with life and living the best I can. In twenty years or so I'll be dead, if not sooner, and none of it will matter to me anymore...so I live well now and try to be a good man. What more can I do?

I guess it suits corporations to keep the populace in a state of unrest, uncertainty and somewhat depressed— my thought exactly!

Thanks for that @galenkp. Maybe I’m not losing it and imagining things………your thoughts were nail on the head in my book.

I guess I just react to what I see and tend not to sugarcoat things.

Society is in a world of pain, self inflicted, and there's little to gain by pretending it's not happening. Having said that, I strongly believe that change can happen, should humanity wish it to and work hard enough at it to affect that change.

We are all but citizens of the same planet and, whilst there's manmade borders, oneness is possible. I have to be right, right? If not, well then, let the nukes fly and put humankind out of their misery.

Thanks for your comment, the first you've made on one of my posts, I appreciate it greatly.

To me that is the way to be with regards to no sugarcoating………pointless and false it is.
The sadness/ craziness of your points is sadly magnified hugely in beautiful South Africa where I live.

The things causing it basically boil down to the same jist of what you have managed to write in a shorter/ better worded & concise piece of my own thoughts.....by the end of it I would probably had written 10 pages (as a normally quiet person) and depleted my liquor stock in frustration.

Great to have made contact and thanks again.

sadly magnified hugely in beautiful South Africa

Indeed, I know many there and, therefore, am aware of some of the issues. It's a shame to see sich a beautiful country go down as it is.

IMO

We are not homogeneous & there's plenty of room for many different approaches.

Government needs to remove arbitrary rules & reduce the bureaucracy.
The financial system needs to return to sound money principle.

Ethics & morals need to be taught in schools & society. How to be a decent human being. Also, the folly of man needs to be taught.

Self reflection & honesty can only work once people realise the above points.
I've had massive incursions with people who believed they were doing "self reflection & honesty" while they dehumanised my point of view & dismissed me offhand as non beneficial to their mindset.

Awesome post once again.

I agree with everything you say, completely.

Do you think it's possible though, is this scenario something human beinggs could affect? I'll be honest and say that whilst possible, it's not probable.

Thanks for your comments, you always have something interesting and pertinent to add.

Yes, humans always find a way. Look at how many empire collapses we have endured as a species.

Our issue, is that we think we are smarter and more enlightened, than previous generations.
Our arrogance, ego & devilish habits make us ignore the past lessons.

Watching people masked outdoors, craning their necks down to worship their handheld black alter, makes me want to push them into the mud & have fun being human again!

We are not immortal & we don't need so much stuff.

We have been gifted cognitive awareness & a robust immune system.

For some reason we want to poison it.

I see amazing young people who are 10 years ahead of me in ability, confidence, awareness & thriving with life.

That gives me hope.

(I saw some young people, maybe 20 to 30 yo, literally, hugging trees & exploring nature in a local park. They are searching for meaning. They want to find their Earth, their grounding. That was great to see.)

Our arrogance, ego & devilish habits make us ignore the past lessons.

Yes!

I agree with the rest also, there's people yearning for their humanness but it's beat out if us at every turn by the nutbaggery. (Refer to your comment as quoted above).

This long read made me realize something today. The world doesn't seem to revolve in a way that humanity embraces change and compassion towards others.

I also think we can't continue in the same way we are now for very long without disasterous results in the future and I don't think enough is being done, by anyone.

Felt in many ways. The people that possesses power to influence and make a bigger difference towards society tends to serve hypocrisy at their breakfast. There is almost no growth. A never-ending cycle of hopelessness. There's this unspoken rule between my closest circle of friends that whenever we're together we set aside our smartphones and talk our heart out. I chose to put down mine every time even if I have nothing much to say in person.

It is a small step from every individual that counts for humanity to heal. If we cannot see change in others, we start it with ourselves.

Thanks for sharing this @galenkp!

It's a nice thing to put aside the smartphone when with your friends and I think you'd have a better connection with them because of it.

You also make a good point about those in positings of influence and hypocrisy,l - it's up to us as individuals to take away their power, their voice, by not listening.

Going to a cafe or restaurant with your significant other or friends, and then staring at your phone? Probably the worst thing you can do on a date or a hangout.

Yep, I agree, but so many do it, here at least.

You'll see it almost everywhere and anywhere in the world right now. Just last week I was out having dinner with my wife, and 3 out of 5 tables had the same scenario.

It's bonkers really. I mean is what's on the phone so engaging that people ignore the real life person sitting across the table? Sadly, people clearly think so.

I really don't know brother, but it surely is bonkers.

If you're gonna be on your phone, then why not order the food from home and eat it there while you're clicking away? 😂

People are being brainwashed by corporations, marketers, governments and social media propaganda. We think we're making our own choices but we are really not. People don't want to think for themselves anymore, but think they are, that they have freedom of choice and decision. They don't.

I speak generally here, not for every single person on the planet.

No lie there, I'm surrounded by social media controlled, delusional people.

They show one thing on social media, but it's actually the opposite in real life.

There was a certain discussion about this topic that was recently held in our area. The speakers talked about how through this disconnected path humanity is slowly 'sinking into the abyss'. They painted the picture of the divide and conquer strategy. The more humanity is divided or separated the easier it is for them to get 'conquered'. A member from the audience asked 'conquered by what?' and the speaker replied 'by dark forces'. These people were spiritually inclined and gave away the impression of being sages.

Ultimately, they said it's through 'heartness' and awakening that humanity will be able to turn the tide in the right direction. This basically means realising the 'one' amidst the multiplicity and diversity of the creation.

I'm not sure what you refer to with the term dark forces but I certainly believe humanity stands at the precipice and is likely to tumble into the abyss. I don't think it's unstoppable, however are we all prepared to do what's required to pull back?

I think dark forces here means the evil that's in the world.

Truly, most of us are far from prepared and some are quite not capable yet. Do many people actually care?

Yes, there's a lot of darkness in the world; brightness too, but much darkness and human greed, selfishness and ego is behind a lot of it.

Do people care? Good question.

Honestly, it’s scary the way it’s going. Connecting is no longer as easy.

While social media is one of the best things to happen to this era, it’s disadvantages are so grave that if we are not careful, we’ll loose ourselves.

Is oneness really attainable @galenkp ? Just my thoughts though.

I try to discipline myself to pay attention when I have a company. What I’m trying to say is we should all be intentional.

While social media is one of the best things to happen to this era

I think it's one of the worst.
