My #1 Trick for Salvaging An Unproductive Day

in Self Improvement3 months ago (edited)

What to do when half of the day is already gone and things are piling up?

Doom Scroll

While some days are meh, some days I can be ultra productive. Unfortunately, when you rely on a lot of external factors, it’s not easy to get things done. These days, I try to do that a lot less and stop procrastinating too much. Usually during days when I am unproductive, I am probably not so well-put or even care of my appearance. It also involves doom scrolling X(twitter), youtube or even instagram. While in the background, there are many things that are waiting to be worked on.

Back in the day, I just let them pile up and didn’t care. I waited until I got some sanity and sense to get back into ultra productive mode. I waited on them naturally but these days, I can’t rely on that anymore. I can’t sit and wait until inspiration comes to me or the will to do anything comes knocking on my door. These days, I commit to doing it even when there’s a tsunami on my doorstep.

I Tried Everything.....

In the past, I tried every piece of advice that is known to mankind, especially since I love the self-improvement niche. I listened to a lot of talks, podcast about discipline and getting things done. Unfortunately, nothing really ever sticks. And once my environment changes, everything changes too. It is also safe to say that I have tried everything.

Another set of challenges in my life is that I am mobile. New environment brings a new set of challenges that sometimes need a few adjusting before I can actually get some things done. So, paired with that kind of environment that poses its own challenge, it becomes increasingly challenging to get anything done. Racking my brain to find what actually works and stick, I ended up doing one trick that always helps now. It has to do with time and a stylish accessory. Meet “the watch”.

My #1 Trick

Somehow, whenever I am wearing a watch, my brain instantly signals that I have to get something done. To me, it’s a marker that I need to get productive and finish all the tasks I have. Personally to me, watch signals professionalism as well as respecting time. So, what I would do if half of my day were already unproductive, I would instantly wear my watch and get back into the loop. It really helps me become aware of time as well as sending all signals that I have to act as a professional.

These days we have smartphones to show time, but watches help me avoid the usage of technology that is quite distracting such as my phone. Rather than constantly checking my phone for time and ending up doing something else, the watch really helps minimize the distraction. While I particularly don’t subscribe to the expensive watches crowd, any watch will do.

This trick really worked for me. Even when cleaning the house and when it gets overwhelming, I also put a watch on and realized that everything isn’t as daunting or time consuming as I thought it would be. More often than not, there’s always that pang of guilt that “ what if I have done them sooner”. It’s why that is something I need to do a lot less this year because as you age, time is an expensive commodity and something that shouldn’t really be wasted doing things we hate.

Reading the first part of this post, you sound just like me😂

I struggle with getting shit done until the deadline. What’s the Gen Z word for it?…Ahhh ADHD.

Lol I know that’s not exactly what ADHD is, it’s just what Gen Z have defaulted to referring to extreme procrastination and unproductiveness as.

I’m going to try the watch trick and see if it works for me. I also have tried everything and nothing seems to work. I made a schedule 2 days ago, planning my entire day out. I’ve been able to stick to it (somehow) so far but I already feel my chaotic self regaining control.

hahaha maybe we all have ADHD and a very short attention span but either way, we gotta find ways to actually fix that and find tricks. Try the watch trick and see if it helps 🤣 or maybe it's really just me and it works for mine. The thing is find what actually works for you

I don't actually wear a watch, but it makes sense that having one could help stay on track with everything. I tend to just check me phone for the time, but then get sucked into it when scrolling through some of my notifications.

Something that helps me, with writing Hive posts especially is telling myself that I'll just get something started, and then come back to it later. What I've noticed is that when I start a post, I end up writing the majority of it there and then, which I either finish in that session, or come back to complete it within only a few hours.

It's like having it started automatically makes it easier to get back to, rather than not knowing what to write about while staring at a blank screen.

I think these days people rely on phone to check time. While it's a lot more convenient, somehow for me I get side tracked haha. It's nice that you can find something that works for you. Because after all, that's why we're living for, finding things that works for us 😃 and continuously evolve hehe.

Wow that's interesting. I haven't worn a watch for years now - been relying on my smartphone for the time. ><

😂 I am sure many aren't because that same reason. But it does make quite a difference, personally. You should try it out to spice up your life 😄 and for a change

Hehehe well noted on your suggestion!

Hahaha 🤣🤣🤣

This is our brain work, work, wo.. squirrel...!!! 🐿️🐿️🐿️

hahaha that's so true!

An analog watch at that (or a smartwatch with an analog face). These allow us to picture time in a way that digital doesn't. Digital time is just numbers, but analog time shows us how much we have left and where we are in the day.

It sounds silly, but I think small silly things like that add up to big things.

So true! often it's always silly little things that help solve our problems :D

Right, I need to wear my watch again. Since my arrival from the French Alps, I stop wearing a watch for a while. I just want to slow down and don't care about time as of now.

hahaha vacation happens! it's time to get back to routine.

haha i need more coffee

I need to fix my watches then, maybe it'd help me. I usually give up if half my day is wasted already

😄 try the watch trick and see if it helps xoxo
