Hive is Effin' Awesome

in LeoFinance3 years ago (edited)

I spent a couple hours running a private "Hive workshop" for a friend of mine and I discovered something -

Hive is fucking awesome!

Okay, I already knew that, but diving in with someone who has no view of this side of crypto at all, and starting from the ground up, meant revisiting perspectives I barely remember once having and touring through whilst talking about blockchain future was a lot of fun. It was only meant to be a quick tour, but after a couple hours of me rambling on, they had to cut me off and head to bed.

Best sleep while you can!

A few years back I mentioned "Steem" to them and they spent a little while there in the morning, finding DTube and then messaging me, "I don't think I am going to find much of interest".

This is what triggered the impromptu tour this evening.

I couldn't leave him with that taste in his mouth for too long.

But, I started with Steem. Then DTube.
And I gave a quick overview of what happened prior to the fork and added:

You can't buy a community.

I then moved to the blogging interface, and onto an alternate face, then to an alternate with a secondary-layer token, then into video delivery, Splinterlands, alternate markets for Splinterlands, the wallet, Dex for secondary-tokens, alternate Dex for secondary tokens...

I think what was surprising was how many different types of interfaces there are and while they understood how they filtered the blockchain and other technical aspects, what I think they weren't prepared for was how things are handled at the social level in terms of governance, content organization and how much value is actually being generated across the Hive ecosystem, without any central core making the decisions. They were quite surprised by the level of quality in the comments sections too, as well how stake ordered the content, bypassing algorithms.

What was great was they brought up the challenges of social media platforms and how they have become more aware of how manipulative and controlling they can be, which allowed for a lot of interesting conversation. They also mentioned "policing" and asked how that is handled, as it is a massive challenge on the centralized sites. Well, they have to host everything, the blockchain only has text and without the algorithms and central interfaces with granular targeting, the ability to manipulate the masses is far lower.

But then I asked,

Seen any adverts or anyone trying to sell something to you?

They had to think for a bit and then realized, no - all the scam of crypto and no one is trying to sell anything, so, "what gives the tokens value?"

Demand of course, people want them for all kinds of reasons and there are many ways to earn, use, leverage, pool... Plus, people like me see this as a hobby and just like any loved hobby, it is possible to get a "little carried away" with it all. But I think one of the main reasons people on Hive are powered up is, they like being part of the staked community and having control over some of the pool as to how it rewards others. I know for me, I enjoy being able to add a few dollars to someone's account. It is fun and empowering!

But, overall, I think I was able to use a common example he and I share in order to give a very good (brief) overview of how the Hive Blockchain is changing how content is developed, distributed and most importantly, owned. I mentioned the censorship resistance, but also posited questions as to what would happen to all of the monetized if for example, YouTube shut down. People have spent years building their presence and even if another service fills the vacuum, their follower base is gone, as is their account. They own none of it. My Hive account moves as I do across this ecosystem and, is not reliant on any individual one of them for me to be able to post, or even earn something.

After two hours though, what I realized is that in order for them to really get an understanding, they would need to get into exploring the space. It is far too complex to give more than an overview, but one thing was encouraging, it wasn't all about the money. In fact, very little of it was.

I think this is what is going to happen more and more, as while the potential to earn is attractive, the possibility to own will become more so. And as the centralized spaces become increasingly problematic in the way they handle their data and treat their userbase, people are going to look for alternatives where they are able to be more free. More will come into consume, and they will find that they will also have the potential to build their own investments here, take part in the gig-economy and, start to enjoy being on the internet again.

For me, it has renewed my interests in the world as a user, not just a consumer.

Hive is awesome.

That snippet with the tabs would make for a great splitter in the post.

I was thinking the same :)

happy to hear that you rediscovered your passion for this community!

I agree that HIVE, is a fantastic place that is growing and changing in interesting ways every week. I think in a few years we might not recognize this place anymore however the lifeblood that pumped into it when I was a baby, is now feeding strong healthy ecosystem.

Let's keep exploring and finding what makes this place so exciting!❤️

It is changing rapidly, but a lot of us spend out time in small areas of it only, so we don't see it all. However, it is going to depend heavily on if there are some more second-layer applications that can capture attention.

Technically speaking, Peaked, and Hive.blog, and D.Buzz are all second level applications... HIVE is the underlying block chain... Or at least that's how I understand it.. I think some of them are capturing attention.

If someone develops the drive to be here without rewards being the primary focus, that’s the first step of surviving the system. Hive is far better to steem and less harsh to newbies.

My starting was rough with almost all my posts with no rewards but I am glad the newbies now can make a few bucks from their intro post.

Steem is essentially useless for people now, unless they are Korean. The Trending page is populated by witness alts self-voting each other.

Grateful for Hive being here. If not for the fork. I wonder where I would be now. I don’t see a future in steem by the way.

I am working on a business idea to help people set up their investment portfolios to build savings for retirements. I am keen to find ways to use Hive to do that - the community side of sharing information about markets and macroeconomics and stuff like that is easy to see. Would love to find ways to the get the concepts of Dex working to execute the investments - challenging as a lot of the product we will be investing in lives on centralised, regulated exchanges.

I am not sure if I can help you with that, but what I do think is going to happen is that more service businesses are going to be built that will tie blockchain activities together and perhaps, some kind of interface/tool that is specifically for this might be useful.

In fairness to your friend not being able to find anything up their alley years back, in fairness to them, there was a lot less stuff years back XD

So have they started having a proper poke around now? :D

They couldn't find anything Yesterday. They remembered the name and went to Steem and saw... the cesspool it is now. :D

They will start soon ;)

I'll take your word on the cesspool description, after the move I went back a couple of times to see if I'd left anyone behind, and after that haven't been back since.

Yay!

Hive is a great example of Gig economy as it is decentralised and community driven . No need huge followers or views to earn rewards but your Content which always appriciated .It provide flexibility and toxic free office environment where onlly you are the boss and your skills are the reward generator.

I am hoping there will be more tools built that can both interact on Hive, but connect to the real world and scale. Things that can service a small local community, millions of times around the globe.

It’s so hard to get people to try stuff like this at times. I’ve tried so hard with some people. Sometimes I guess the drive just isn’t there.

It has taken years with this person to get to this stage and they hold crypto already. It is changing though, as people are starting to ask "so what can I do with it?"

That is a natural next question!

Yes this is what Hive is and not just about the rewards. Look they are great as well but money or value is not everything. You would be good to lead some seminars helping to onboard new Hiveans as that is your specialty and surprised no one has encouraged this type of onboarding. Can picture you in front of a few hundred explaining how Hive works and feeling right at home doing this.

Seminars would be weird, though I could do it - I am not the "Hive School" kind of person. Everything I do is for free, unless someone wants to reward it of course :)

I remember coming here in 2016 and not finding a thing that I could anchor to. I was looking at it differently when I came back in 2017, and I had no expectations of money, so it wasn't crypto-driven, that just happened to be one of the unpaid benefits if you will.

I am glad I toughed it out and found a place here. It is a challenge to take it all in, especially if you are used to other social media(, but, in the long run, it offers everything (and then some) the others don't!

It can be a weird place for a noob, especially if not knowing anyone. I wasn't overly active on social Media before this, and when I came here I felt kind of alone, but I kept doing my thing, talking with the few people who found me and over time, started to build a network out from it.

I didn't know I loved to write before this at all....

You know I first met DTube then HIVE (Steemit back then) through DTube. I didn't even know what HIVE was. It was so complicated to me at that times.

My main reason to be here is to be the part of the staked community. HIVE is like my part time job and I enjoy it.

It was interesting that some people on Steem, didn't know Hive started - under a rock? It was everywhere :D

Hobby, part-time job, passion - it is many things for me :)

I then moved to the blogging interface, and onto an alternate face, then to an alternate with a secondary-layer token, then into video delivery, Splinterlands, alternate markets for Splinterlands, the wallet, Dex for secondary-tokens, alternate Dex for secondary tokens...

Hive is like a huge labyrinth but with most paths being the right ones.

This is a good way to put it. There is very little to do "wrong" here - but some paths are faster to get to where you might want to be, than others.

I'm in the process of developing an onboarding system for a passion project I've been running for 14 years. The more I dig into Hive to explain what it is to the uninitiated, the more I realize just how awesome it is. I also realize that there are terms and behaviors that I don't think much about now, but were a bit confusing in the beginning. So, I'm working to ease folks in by onboarding in stages. I'll know if this simplification works or if I'll need to tweak it soon enough. Either way, I hope folks new to Hive recognize just how special this space is and how awesome it is that we can all grow in it together.

It would be great if older folks recognized it too :)

Good luck with your project btw!

At 50+, I'd say I qualify as one of the "older folks" ;-) Cheers!

lol - I meant people on the platform who have been here a while - but, I am old in both platform and age - though not quite as old as you :)

LOL. Ah, yes that makes senses. Folks who have been on Hive from the early days. Got it. :-)
