Screwing all weekend

A couple of weeks ago I had an attempted break-in at my other house; the would-be thieves used pry-bars to lever up the automatic roller-door to the carport and made a total mess of it. Insurance will replace the roller door of course, but that's not the point. Anyway, whilst I was there with the work-crew sent by the insurance company to secure the roller-door, (it wouldn't close properly), one of the chaps made an observation about my fence...and that's what's had me frustrated and screwing all weekend.

I need to confess, I wasn't exactly screwing all weekend, just on Sunday. Here's why.

The fellow pointed out there were no screws attaching the top capping on the sheets of colourbond steel fencing panels to the panels themselves. This meant the capping could be easily lifted off and the panel slid upwards and out of the channels on the posts to either side leaving a gaping hole in my fence. He demonstrated the scenario and sure enough, it was a very simple thing to open up my fence to gain access.

It annoyed me that I hadn't noticed it when the fence was installed but I left it to the fencing professionals, the father of a friend, to do the right thing - Clearly they didn't. I decided Sunday was as good a day as any to do some screwing so I headed over there equipped with my cordless impact driver and a pile of tek-screws to rectify the issue.

I'd love to make it seem that the task required a lot of manliness and skill but in truth a monkey could have done the job.

It was a simple matter of driving the self-tapping tek-screws into the capping through into the fence panels themselves. I put three in each panel-section, one at each side close to the uprights and one in the middle, and repeated that on both sides of the fence; I'm the, do it properly man, so went a little overboard with the fixings.

I'd budgeted an hour for the job considering I intended to do the entire length of fencing around the house, but some of the fence sections were difficult to get to due to shrubs and things so it took three hours. I got it done though, and some pruning also.

I was pretty annoyed that the job wasn't done right in the first place to be honest; it was a $5,500 job (about three years ago) and I expected it to be done right, but isn't that the way of it these days? People's care-factor for quality is non-existent generally and everyone is cutting corners and doing sub-standard work.

Have you folks ever paid for a job to get done and found out later it wasn't done right, corners were cut or the workmanship was shoddy? Feel free to comment below if you have, and if you feel like it.

Design and create your ideal life, don't live it by default - Tomorrow isn't promised so be humble and kind

Sorry folks, I click-baited again. I can't help it; I get a chuckle out of it. Anyway, it'll probably not be the last time it happens, however I'm sure I'll be able to resist the urge for several weeks now - One can't have too much fun right?

Parallel universe we share I am tellin' ya Galen !!

I have spent the last couple breaks from the highways screwing.

Screwing and re-screwing.

The front sun deck morphed from a 16'x8' to a 40'x 8'

I had to pull the first 18 deck boards up to reposition the gaps between them and replace a cracked one.

Tons of screwing and screwing... In and out rinse and repeat. Lmaooo

You like playing with your deck huh?

New Zealand deck commercials.

I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes.

@pooky-jax just smiled and shook her head.

I know you would...Pooky's reaction be like, them boys be krazy.

Then She said...

Get back to work. "Horse"

Or was it Hoss..?

Some workhorse photos...

She just likes to watch you play with your deck.

Look, we don't really talk about it; my wife and i moved into our new house a year and a half ago and have done a lot of renovations...needless to say they haven't done one right. The beauty is that the more time passes, the poorer the jobs are, but the prices go up and obviously everyone wants advance payments. But I think it's a very personal thing, because if I have to do a job I need to do it well, it's a matter of principle.

It sounds like you have the same situation we do here, the quality of tradespeople is declining. I. Ant do everything myself, I don't have the skills and tools for some things, so I have to engage a tradesperson but try to be selective with them.

Yes, I too try to select well who does work in my house. But I confess that by now I try as much as possible to make them myself... it's also a way to acquire new skills heh heh!

People's care-factor for quality is generally non-existent and everyone is cutting corners and doing sub-standard work.

This is a common thing to happen, even when done by those who claim to be professionals.

Working with care and responsibility should be values of professionalism. so that people do not lose time and efficiency, which should not be required for work performed by those who claim to be professionals in their field.

For matters involving my home and office work, I even take the time to personally control the final process for dealing with the loss. We are happy to carry out our own final checks to your satisfaction and address any potential risks, even if the job is done by a professional.

Yep, taking the time to verify work that's been undertaken is important. The problem arises when a person doesn't understand what's being/been done and doesn't have the expertise themselves to understand if the work has been done correctly or not.

Also, what about the things that are done that we have no control over? Say, food and production? With care-factor declining who's to say what we eat is produced correctly?

The problem arises when a person doesn't understand what's being/been done and doesn't have the expertise themselves to understand if the work has been done correctly or not.

To get the quality of result you want, you really need a reference, right?
It's one that makes one get a clear picture of things.

Is what we eat produced correctly? It's completely out of our control.
That is why those who care really like to process what they consume themselves. I truly love home-cooked food.

Yeah, we all love home cooked food, but unless you grow or produce every single thing you consume, you're still eating food processed in a factory. Has it been done right? We will never know, until there's a problem.

There's really no objection to that.
We are all under their control.

I'd love to make it seem that the task required a lot of manliness and skill but in truth a monkey could have done the job.

Well, perhaps, but a manly monkey nonetheless.

I have never suffered a break in to know what that level of violation feels like, but I'm pretty sure it's not a pleasant feeling at all. I have, however, been the victim of soddy craftsmanship from a crew, and know exactly how that feels. Luckily for me I was able to get pictures and get them back to fix it.

Hopefully the entire fiasco didn't ruin your entire day. As you say, tomorrow isn't promised, and it can be upsetting to need to spend a day fixing things that shouldn't need to be fixed.

Let's go with manly monkey, well suggested.

The entire situation is a bit shit but life moves on and me with it. Things could have been far worse so I'm grateful it wasn't. I'll get a few things in place and hopefully that door gets replaced by the end of January. The insurance company told me not to hold my breath. They're so busy with claims because the storms and flooding and all.

I think I am getting to know you now @galenkp, as I knew what type of screwing you were doing, the same as myself this weekend lol. I´ve been working on some shelves I built in the past, as I will be moving the truck soon and wanted to re enforce them.
The only time I paid for someone to do work for me, was in this truck, I was pregnant and wanted help with insulating the floor, the ´professionals´ cut the plywood too short that was covering the insulation and what my floor boards would sit on. I was a bit annoyed I must say. I could have done a better job myself, so I feel you xxxx

Haha, my reputation precedes me! Lol.

Yeah, sometimes we need to call in the professionals, but not always is the work they do good. It's so bloody frustrating but when one finds a good tradie one must hold on to them!

I knew it's a click-bait, so I was coming here to tell you, you're busted! Again!

Haha, damn it, you always catch me out! Don't worry, I'm working on my next one so you better sharpen up, it might not be as obvious.

Yes it will.

🤣

I'm training for it already.

Lol...Smurf training. It's a hardcore workout.

Despite the annoyance at the fence people doing it wrong, I imagine you enjoyed being out in the fresh air with a simple project. Using a drill on autopilot must be sort of like painting and other relaxing things. Anyway, Sunday is indeed as good a day as any to do some screwing ;)

I like DIY stuff so yeah, it was an enjoyable time, music and tools always is. And yes, Sunday screwing is enjoyable...any day really.

Oh, yes! I just got home last night and yes! I needed a little clickbait!

I have never personally had a break-in, but, just the thoughts of it make me uneasy and then irritated that anyone thinks they have a right to do that. Sorry on all accounts. I am glad you got it fixed up, but, honestly, there is no such thing nowadays as good workmanship. I was looking for a foundation person for the Victorian House on the Shore and I can't tell you how frustrating that has been.

On another note, Can I borrow your monkey?

Here she is, all relaxed, refreshed and rejuvenated! I've missed ya Swigs!

Good workmanship is a thing of the past unfortunately, generally anyway. Everyone one better just go ahead and lower their expectations.

On another note, Can I borrow your monkey?

He's always up for a little extra work. No problem.

Hello @galenkp I am very sorry for the robbery attempt that you have suffered, luckily the insurance will cover the door.

Sometimes it is better to do the work with unknown people, many times they are more responsible with the task.

The completion, the quality of the work and of the workers is a very questionable factor nowadays, there are few professional people who pay attention to the smallest detail.

I did many works in my home, and I have often come across poor workers and jobs.

Have a beautiful Sunday

Yeah I agree, so many tradespeople either don't have the skill or the responsibility to do the job right, I think the problem is largely global.

Just one question, how did you do to place the final image as the cover, there you fooled us with this title hahahaha 😍, but speaking on the subject, too bad what happened to you, but well these are things that happen, it's time to learn and solve, I hope you had a great weekend, greetings.🤗

I use Peakd to make my posts.

If you go to the advanced tab in the editor and scroll down it will show small thumbnails of the images in the draft post. One can select which will be the thumbnail shown once the post is made live.

ohhh thank you very much, I did not know this, a great tip here, every day you learn something new, thanks again, greetings.😍🤗

is that what is know as "clickbait" 🤣😂😅

Bait that makes one click. I don't really know what it means, so I might have buggered it up.

🤣😇👍
i still read it

I appreciate that.

Haha, it happens very often, we pay for a job at a big cost but they are just playing around, I think everyone must have a moment like this, therefore I personally always do it moreover, if I can't afford it anymore then I call people, at least what they are going to do will definitely be more messy due to my actions🤣

Doing it yourself is one way to go, but sometimes a professional is required. That's when there could be problems.

Yes, and that's why we should look for the best professionals😅
Thanks for the response

Indeed, the problem is knowing they're the best before we hire them.

Exactly as you said

I can never forget the girl in high school who picked up a loose screw from the back of the class and presented it to me with two hands asking,

"Want to screw?"

That event alone was worth joining the school choir.

I kind of miss working with power tools. Sometimes they are easier to handle than people.

I somehow missed the weekend on Hive and I thought today was Monday and I just checked and it is Tuesday. I was in CPR training all afternoon yesterday and then after that my son's birthday party. Somehow I thought today was Monday again. It's summer for you guys but for us it is a zombie apocalypse.

Knowing CPR is an excellent skill and could save someone's life, so that takes priority over Hive for sure.

I like working with my hands, building and fixing things and try to do it when I can, which is a lot I guess. It's enjoyable and I miss it when I cannot do so, not unlike yourself. And yes, picking up a screw here or there happens, sometimes I drop them, but I've never had someone say the want to screw line to me before. I'm old as fuck so my time is done I think. Lol.

!LOL

I think that incident was in 1990 or 1991. I can't even remember her name. All I remember was that she was blond and she had a wonderful voice.

It's a good thing you're so diligent.

People do that here too.

Isn't it a great society humans have created for themselves in which there's no trust because people are so used to deception and untrustworthy people. Human's have really done a great job huh?

(This is all sarcasm in case you didn't recognise it. Humans are fucked.)
