[WE108] Who's up for games night? Let's play this game of GLOBAL DOMINATION.

Weekend Games Night;

I’ve been counting down to this weekend for a number of weeks, and feel a bit of a sense of satisfaction now that it’s arrived. I can sum up the entirety of this feeling in two words: ‘School Holidays’ – the sweetest two words on the planet, even for an English teacher!

And, as the weekend rolled out, it didn’t start well. This morning when we got up, we were met with drizzle and it hasn’t let up since. We did a long walk earlier, umbrella in hand – we didn’t get too damp, but it wasn’t a particularly pleasant stroll. Otherwise, it was a pretty routine day – went to the grocery store, got the weekend papers, read them over lunch and continued to read them over a couple of coffees.

I also gave myself a haircut. It was the first time I’ve done this in years, and, I reckon the new ‘do looks pretty good, in fact, I’m ready for games night!

But, it’s not just any games night – it will be an indulgent night of nostalgia and history. You see, when I was younger I used to love the game ‘RISK’ – it was a boardgame where you were distributed land cards, you had a couple of armies, and off you went with the intention of claiming world domination! You would do this by bringing your armies up against your opponents, and in a battle decided by the dice and the amount of soldiers you brought to the square, you would slowly but surely take over the world.

The game was all about strategy – often it was good to take over Australia, as there was only one path in and out and you had the opportunity to create a blockade of armies to stop entry. If you tried to take Asia too soon, you could be attacked on multiple fronts – but you’d balance this against your opponents not wanting to begin their land grab here. Europe was always a popular place to wage war, and I used to love making Africa my colonial possession.

The game was brilliant, and you can see where I’m going with this post: No prizes for guessing then, that the dinner party will certainly be featuring a game or two of WORLD DOMINATION. It does raise the question though, as to who would make the cut, and I think I’ve finally narrowed it down:

Winston Churchill:
One of my favourite speeches belongs to this brazen chap, ‘We will fight them on the beaches… We will fight them in the air…”. I can see it quite clearly, as Winston begins his turn, he’ll move to his feet – and as he reaches for the dice, he’ll begin his monologues. Of course, I might need to ask him to put his cigar out – a small hurdle to overcome to hear him utter, ‘Blood, toil, tears and sweet’ and develop into ‘Their finest hour’, before shouting at the little plastic soldiers, ‘Never surrender!’.

Agatha Christie:
The maestro of mystery and strategic thinking – of course Agatha Christie would make the list. She was one clever woman, and one of the things our family would do at game night, is to develop a bit of a story as we’d plan out our invasions. It was usually completely implausible – much like an Agatha Christie novel, but somehow, she makes the improbable absolutely believable. While we work through the battles, her magic touch on the narrative will be essential to the joy of the night. And given her record of misdirection, I look forward to seeing how she manipulates her fellow players.

Jim Carey:
Perhaps indicating my early dorkiness, I’d put on ridiculous accents as I defended my territories and got aggressive with my moves. I’ll be honest, I’m really terrible with accents, so I can only imagine just how tolerant my family was to let me annoy them. Sometimes my dad used to join me in these bad impersonations – honestly though, I’m sure my Japanese sounded more like Irish, and you’d probably confuse my French voice with someone from New Zealand!
The solution: bring in the master of voices!

And there you have it, a perfect night planned: A night of brilliant speeches, clever strategy and outrageous voice impersonations. I hope I win, and, more importantly, that they like my new haircut!

I busted up laughing about the accent part.

My mom used to do like 15 accents.
except - they were all exactly the same. She would just say...
This is my Irish accent.
This is my Scottish accent.
This is my Chinese accent.
This is my English accent.

(and i'm laughing SO damn hard right now - because every single one of those sentences - sounded exactly the same - same accent. and it was kinda.. um... LOUD. and maybe like.. Japanese??? hahahahahahahahaha)

but somehow - she thought she would just talk very loud - and that would fool us into thinking the accent had changed. so.... i'm glad that you have the same problem as her hahahahahaha

I don't know if i would like Risk. it sounds like it would make me anxious. like Settlers of Catan. hahahaha but I would still like to come- and laugh at your accents! hahahahahaha

nice entry! LOL

You know what, I already like your mum!
But seriously, it's be worth getting her into RISK - it's really just about throwing the dice and getting a bit of luck as you move your little plastic pieces around the board. She's definitely be into it. Never heard of Settlers of Catan.

my mom can only play card games. she has not an ounce of patience for anything else - but cards?

FREAKING SHARK.

and she kinda cheats when she can get away with it too. hahahahaha don't let her hear me say that though - she will yell at me with an Irish Chinese ~Russian~~ LOUD - faux Japanese accent.

but you know what she got me into?

Hand Knee and Foot Canasta. total old lady game. hahaha uses 6 decks of cards LOLOL - she has a freaking 6 deck shuffler too. TOLD YOU - SHARK!!!
hahahaahahahaha

super fun -and Risk sounds a lot like Catan!!!! you have to check THAT one out!!!

You know dreemsteem, you've added a bit of extra delight to my morning. Your mum sounds great!
These are the colourful people we need more of in the world.

I'm off to start my day, have a good one.

hehehe and i'm off to go watch fireworks to celebrate the day Americans became rebels. LOLOL

night to me- and day to you!!!! hehehehe

(glad that I added some delight - rest assured you had me giggling too!)

Interesting selection of players!

RISK was one of my favourites as a kid! I was looking at getting it for my daughter and I to give it a go, but unsure if she will get into it quite yet.

And... I started my holidays today too. So... perhaps worth the experiment! :)

Heya Tarzakp; how's it going? Glad to hear we can both be putting our feet up - hopefully more sun for you over there than what I'm seeing!

You should definitely pick your kid up a copy; never too young to indoctrinate them to love the games you want to play with them. ;) Have a good one-

It was sunny all week while I was stuck inside working - now... cloudy and set to rain. With summer weather possibly already being over in Finland (it is just the start) it sucks. :D

I am hoping to raise a nerd... there should be at least one in the family!

With an intention like that, you're already on the right parenting path.
Have a good one, Tim.

Haha, Risk huh? Well, I think Churchill would have a good handle on that game considering his WW2 experiences.

I remember as a kid playing Risk; Those games went on for a long time because I was not one to capitulate or give in - I'm the fight to the death sort of fellow. I love the game to be honest.

This is a great post man, thanks for taking the time.

I hope you have a great weekend.

I was the same; would make for a very high intensity night when our family would whip this out - so much so that usually people would refuse to play with me. I guess we were more of a card games family. But, glad to find a kindred spirit seeking world conquest. ;)

so much so that usually people would refuse to play with me.

This happened with me and Monopoly. I actually self-restrict Monopoly playing because, well losing at Monopoly doesn't sit well with me, or go well for other players. Lol.

Ah, see, I'm not a fan of Monopoly. Cribbage on the other hand - when I end up booking myself into the retirement centre, it won't be because I'm in need of care, it'll be because I'm bored and looking for someone to play with. (You know, I nearly typed that as, 'Looking for some gamers' - certainly would be looking to re-invent that term).

I used to know how to play cribbage but, thinking about it now, I can't recall how. I used to play it with a chap at work in between action. Passed the time.
