Sausage Racing

We are dog sitting for a few days on short notice, as the owners had something come up. However, it is a little bit different this time, as there were things "on the schedule" for the dog and it has to go to the vet a couple times so they can watch it get a worming pill. Yep. Multiple vet trips so they can prove it has taken a pill. This dog is in shows and travels overseas, so has to have an up-to-date passport.

But the other (more fun) thing was that it was booked into an event to try track running, like greyhounds and whippets do - except it was only for dachshunds. And for those who know what dachshunds are like can imagine, chaos ensued, and many laughs were had. The ones above were even dressed in their racing suits for the occasion.

We are on the list to get our own dog and hopefully it will come this year, but it is never really certain and there are some potential wrinkles in the plan. We are on "a list" at the same kennel our loan dog is from, but our loan dog might also be having puppies of its own, which would be awesome to have, as he is a great personality and the chances are they will be somewhat similar.

"Personality" - Can dogs have it?

Of course!!

Dachshunds are hunting dogs by nature - well, maybe by nurture - because most of the dogs didn't give much of a chase. And "Paavo" who is a tiny little thing, first hunted down the prize being pulled on a string and then graduated with the handful of other dogs (out of about 40) that were able to pay attention had a chance to chase the proper hare around half the track. Despite his diminutive size and shorter than even dachshund normal legs, he gave it his best go.

And then, was spent.

A couple runs like that and he was ready to curl up and get to sleep.

I took my camera with a couple longer lenses, but unfortunately, one of them is pretty crappy (100-300 mm) and were not crisp enough to even bother with, so I changed to the smaller (40-150mm). I am not great with either at speed, especially with lower light, but they came out okay considering the conditions, and my skill.

All in all, it was a pretty good "event" and my wife was thrilled to be surrounded by so many dachshunds of varying types. I was even pretty happy to pat them and I am looking forward to having one of our own at home too. I have even planned to build a few "access ramps" so he can get up onto the couch to stare from the window.

Perhaps I will be a crazy dog person.

There was a few of them there today.

Aww...what a fun day! Any activities having to do with the sausages brings smiles and laughter. The little guy gave it his all. He deserves lots and lots of snuggles!

It is funny with dachshunds, as they are always so silly, but also normally well behaved with other dogs. Forty dogs, no issues!

He was ready for bed once we got home :)

They really are a breed apart lol. They'll go until they just can't go anymore. I bet next morning he was ready to get busy all over again!

aws their faces so cute!

The best ones were the dogs that just did whatever they wanted.

You’ll regret saying this once you have your own stubborn dog! 😂

yes, of course dogs have personality! Sometimes more than people, if we’re being real. The fact that Paavo is a tiny track star and possibly a future dad? Whew, this pup is booked and busy.... I can’t even imagine how cute those puppies would be....tiny chaos gremlins in racing gear. Interesting read Taraz

Yeah, it seems this way. More goodness in them too.

It depends on the mum too! We don't know her. :D

Dogs are cute when they wear clothes. Greyhound racing doesn't interest me much. I know it's very popular in Britain. I was surprised to see dogs that can run as fast as horses over short distances.

I hope you adopt the animal you want soon.

Dogs are cute when they wear clothes.

As long as it isn't done in a cruel way.

Greyhound racing doesn't interest me much.

Me either. Same with horse racing. Though, we are going to try and go to see some trots racing (horse and cart) here this summer. Just for something different.

How is the weather there? If it's as hot as here, in (Southern) Europe, you must have seen plenty of hot dogs 🌭

It is terrible here! 17C today. A bit warmer tomorrow and the next day, but then falling again. So far, not a beach summer!

Very cute! It looks like it was a really great time! Not that you were, but if you had been on the fence about getting a dog, this probably tipped the scales for sure!

I am keen to have a dog 95% of the time. But it is the 5% when we could be doing other things that is the issue!

Yeah, I hear that. Since we lost our dog last year I miss her dearly, but it is nice being able to just pick up and go when we want.

Having a pet requires special care like a kid, particularly when we are away. I feed stray cats since pandemic and even for this, you need to devote attention :)

Yeah. They take a bit of work. In Finland they are indoor animals all the time too. No stray dogs or cats here!

This sounds not good for their nature.

I'm pretty sure I could beat any of those little bastards all day long. Well, once maybe. And over a short distance. Like a metre or two. But yeah, victory would be mine.

A few years ago I went to Canterbury Park and watched dachshund races. Most of them just wanted to play but a few ran to the finish line as fast as their little legs could manage. There was also a camel race (marginally entertaining). The the real fun was the ostrich race with trained (horse) jockeys riding them. Or rather trying to ride them. All of the ostriches threw their riders before the finish line.

I think it is great for smallsteps to have a pet companion to play with and could be her puppy. My grandson has a sausage dog and they sleep together every night and she is so protective over him.

Sounds like you’ve had a fun and heartwarming few days with this little character hope your own dog joins the family soon!

Wow, those are some athletic sausages.

Love those dogs, their dress is also cute for them. Nice to see them wearing racing dress.
I always love to see people who are taking care of dogs and treat them as their own.

Dachshund racing, such a unique idea! Paavo gave it his all despite those short legs, true determination right there.🤗

Our dreeveri escaped by jumping from a window 2 meters from the ground while we were at work today. One neighbour caugh her from the street and another found our company phone number and called to alert us and said he’d dog sit for the day and not to worry about it.

Sometimes it takes a village and dog people take care of other dog people and their dogs 😁
