Indebted sleep debted

in OCD4 years ago

I don't know why I bother sometimes.

I have been a bit ill of late and thought a good night's sleep would do me some good. 1130pm.

Perhaps it would, but instead the dog woke me up to be taken out, something that happens a couple of times a year, and before I could, he peed on the floor. 4am.

Back in bed and falling asleep again and then my daughter woke me up to pee. At least she didn't go on the floor. 5am.

But, being close to morning she didn't rally want to go back to bed, so I am sitting Jere with her as she tries to sleep as it is far too late for me. 6am.

Well, perhaps next weekend I will get some sleep, as thus week I have far too much on my plate to get through.

My wife and I almost gave up completely on trying to get a loan for the renovation work required on our potential new, old home, but after a call on Saturday, there is a chance we may still secure one.

I am in two minds about taking on more debt as obviously, debt sucks ass. However so does the prospect of a 10-year renovation. We are prepared for one though, as even though we may secure a loan, we aren't getting our hopes up that it will happen. I have a feeling the loans manager made a mistake with her proposal.

The loan we need isn't massive, but at the same time, renovation work is significant enough to require chunks of cash in very short periods. For example, to get the oil heating changed over to a ground heat exchange system is around 20,000 euros, and while it doesn't take long to drill and install, it does require upfront payment.

The house currently uses between 3-4000 litres of oil a year which has significant costs and of course environmental impacts. Moving to a heat exchanger will have an ROI of about 8 years and use significantly less energy. It also is one of the easiest ways to increase house value. This is Finland, heating is a must.

Getting the loan would allow us to take care of the several large work items that require tradespeople, and then give us the space to do our own work. Because it will take us time to renovate things like surfaces anyway, it would be fine to have small monthly cash injections from what we can save.

My wife and I are looking around the Internet for inspiration as the house offers quite an opportunity to blend styles. We are thinking that even though a 60s house, the bathroom and kitchen can be modern with very clean lines and materials, while the rest of the house can have a more eclectic range to add warmth. Still, I don't mind the staples of black, white and grey.

Damn I am tired.

It is going to be a long day.

Luckily, I don't have any customer meetings today as far as I know, so I might be able to get away with staring at my screens thoughtlessly. That is similar to sleeping I guess.

Obviously, the house is taking up a lot of my thoughts at the moment as it is not only a big financial investment, but also is going to require a lot of effort on our part to get it done. While some people think renovating a house is picking tiles and wallpaper, we are going to have to get into it physically in order to keep our costs down.

This will be the third renovation I have done, and by far the largest. While looking forward to most of it, my hands still remember the last round and I don't think they are happy about the prospect.

Well, time to "wake up" and get my daughter ready for daycare and the dog outside - who is currently happily sleeping in his bed with an empty bladder. I will get to comments a bit later in the day.

Steem and Sleep have 3 letters in common, but when I'm on the first I never get that close to the second.

I hope the renovation loan works out.

Definitely go for the heat exchanger. We use a similar amount of oil in our old, old farmhouse and as soon as we can raise the money we desperately want to move to a more efficient heating system.

Steem owes me a lot of Sleep :)

Yep. Depending on how big your place is (this place is quite large), also look into an air and water heat exchanger as they don't require drilling a well and are about 30% cheaper (at least here). We are going to look into it, but I think the place is on the outer edge of capabilities.

Heat exchangers are not popular in the UK yet. We are interested in a wood boiler as we are in a forested area and have an endless supply of free wood - especially as another tree fell down across our lane in the storms today!

Yep, that is quite common here too (pretty much, Finland is all forest and lakes) but losing popularity. We will have a wood -fired sauna in this place though :) I have a friend I will get the wood from as he owns forest.

btw, I don't know all the proper names for these things in English, only Finnish - it is weird.

A sauna would be good. I remember using one when I stayed in Finland once Christmas. The ones in Britain never seem quite the same.

Wood-fired saunas have a softer heat than the electric, even though they are often hotter.

I Totaly understand this! Even when I try to sleep, I keep thinking of what to write the next day.

wow , 3rd renovation. You will be an Expert at it yet ;)
Praying you get that Loan to help out !!

Not an expert, just poor :)
Doing as much as possible where possible, increases the potential margins in the future by saving now and not paying as much interest on debt later. I hope we get a bit more though, as the cost of heating monthly is significant and getting the exchanger changed offsets the loan repayments.

Our house need renovation, but we don't have the money (and commitment) to do so, so I understand this.

yeah, it takes money, time, effort, planning... one day...

Will you be running on coffee all day? I must admit I have done that more than once.

Most likely, coffee and sugar.

Being an adult is tough man haha. Try and sleep well when you can. If debt is needed, thats why we have the option sometimes right, sounds like you will get it figured out.

Being an adult is tough man haha.

25 years of adulthood, still can't adult good.

Woah! I felt tired just by reading.

Sleep debt is a hard thing to recoup. Cat naps can help, little ten minute micro naps. Set alarms though, you don't want ten minute break to turn into a ten hour where is everyone when you wake up in a dark office nap.

I have lived on naps for the last few years. I wish I could ensure at least one a day :)

I hope you get the loan, that kind of ROI is exactly the way I look at things in terms of what to fix first, makes complete sense.

You really should prioritise sleep, it's literally a panacea.

Hope you were able to catch up on sleep :)

I am going to dash your hopes - maybe tonight :)

You know what I can't even say anything because that would make me a hypocrite XD
