Shadows: The welcome thief

in Shadow Hunters3 years ago

Faith and I often walk on the beach; We live quite close and because the weather in South Australia is pretty good all year round, hot summers and mild winters, we get to enjoy it for most of the year. We arrive in the early evening, take a walk then sit on the beach or jetty to watch the sun slip over the horizon as we share a meal: Fish and chips, a burger or pizza.

It's a relaxing way to shed the stress of the day, bathed in fading golden light, serenaded by lapping waves and the call of sea birds. We feel deeply connected in those moments, with each other and the world around us and we value these moments greatly.

We don't talk about life-matters: Finances, investments, jobs, business, health or the many other matters a couple must to talk about...Instead we talk about family, travel, holidays, places we've been and want to go. But talking seems out of place too, and we often lapse into silence whilst the shadows lengthen and the sun slips behind the horizon; Nature provides one of the best shows and it's all for free...One simply has to look up.

This image was taken on one such evening; The air seemed electric and was heavy with moisture due to the storm hanging over the horizon. Lightening sparked and flickered off in the distance but it was still warm, around 29°C, and very still, not a breath of wind. Fading sunlight filtered through moisture particles and atmosphere, billions of prisms throwing a warm golden-light across the beach and jetty, and we sat silently watching it unfold.

Faith and I are simple people, we appreciate and value a simple life and simplicity in general, and moments like this bring a deep connection with each other and the natural world around us; Just another day ending it its unique way; We've seen enough to know that no two are alike and so we never tire of this splendour.

We watched the shadows creep their way across the rough boards of the jetty until finally, right at the moment the sun left us, they disappeared into darkness.

The shadows stole our stress and worries like a welcome thief and we felt...Centred, better than we did before, and grateful for the simple joy of sharing each others company and natures light show.

Nothing wrong with comfortable silence! Such a beautiful place is perfect for just letting go of everything for a brief moment. Have a good week-end! xox

Hey Rebecca, nice to have you drop in. Juts for the record you're welcome to drop in in real life anytime. :) I'll make the coffee.

We're so fortunate to live close to this beach...I mean, look at it. Although, like you, we find beauty in many places...It's a perspective thing.

I hope you have a nice weekend too. Relax, get crazy or find a balance...Just do it with passion. 🙂

MMM ...Coffee!! Someday, maybe we'll be on the same continent long enough. 😁

I agree it's a perspective thing. It's easy to find beauty in just about any natural setting just paying attention to the little things.

It's cold out, I plan on Vegging on the couch and smoking pot with passion before I have to quit on monday so I can pass a drug test when work starts back up. (yep we get drug tested on a legal substance that goes back weeks)

Perspective is a potent thing.

Pot. Don't laugh at me but, I've never tried it. Yeah, I know I'm almost 51, but it's true. Not once. Is that weird? It's not that I haven't had the chance, just never wanted to.

LMFAO, the only weird thing is that you think it's weird! Each to our own. I don't drink or like alcohol so that's my sinful delight and then I clean up when it's time to go to work. My childhood bff tried it a few months ago for the first time and she had all these questions beforehand, I thought it was both cute and funny at the same time. I have been smoking pot since I was 14 so I guess It's just something I've always enjoyed even before they legalized it.

You're right, each of us have different paths in life, that one wasn't mine. I don't drink much either, just a bit here and there, socially, never when I'm on my own. I don't think I'd ever want to try pot but who knows, maybe one day. Maybe you could make me some brownies and feed them to me without telling me. Could be good for a laugh, for you.

One of Faith's cousin was terribly burned 30 years ago and is in a lot of pain each day so is on cannabis oil for it...Seems to work well but is very expensive. It's been a battle for him to get it actually, which sort of sucks. Still, he's on it now and it's helping. I know this is different to smoking it.

That escalated quickly!! I'm not a fan of drugging people without their knowledge. It's a bit frowned upon around here! 😂😂. I would be glad to give you your first pot experiece tho. I do like to make brownies and pretend I put pot in them to see who the posers are so I don't invite them to my next party tho...not above that one.

Ouch burns are nasty and painful for a long time. It's probably not cheap here either but it's legal and there are stores everywhere so it makes pretty easy for any adult to get a variety of products. It is good for pain management, that's my excuse for smoking...😂 It helps with nausea and auto-immune pain, joint pain...anxiety, insomnia, lots of stuff.

Earing it smoking it or whatever, it's all different plus their is different products like hash/oil/shatter that are each more concentrated, I prefer just strait up the flower (some are too much for me like shatter but oil is nice, sometimes I mix and call it a salad). Obviously with smoking it probably being the most harmful to health ...well cause it's smoking.

What a sensational photo that has the perfect combination of full peacefulness 👍

Thanks mate, it was a nice night, odd weather, but nice nonetheless.

The odd weather made the photo look great , have a great weekend buddy 👍

This is quite stunning and of course your wonderful post brings the photo alive with warmth and feelings. There is genuine love in your words and appreciation for each other and for nature. Thank you for your support of the Shadow Hunters Community!

Thanks Melinda, photos have a way of reminding one of the moment depicted, this one certainly does. It was a nice night, very strange from a weather perspective, but enjoyable nonetheless. In truth Faith and I tend to enjoy ourselves whatever we do...It comes from setting lower expectations and not bothering to seek perfection. Just being together is perfect enough. 🙂

A role has come up for curation responsibilities in the SH community. I need someone fair and discerning and you were the first person to come to mind. Can we connect via DM?

Let's DM

@melinda010100#5803 on Discord. Can you find me? I always have a terrible time finding anyone there!

Go check your Discord. :)

Glad to be connected!

Certainly does look like a nice moment to share out there that evening. Dont get a view like that everyday.

We're lucky to have this on our doorstep, and to be the types to find value in it.

Hello @galenkp you are a privileged being living so close to a place like this, I admire that you can walk with your wife and spend a fun afternoon watching the day go, while they relax and eliminate the stress level.
I appreciate very much that you shared this beautiful photograph

have a happy start to the week

Thanks mate, it's a nice spot. I feel blessed to have been born in this country as there's so many beautiful and amazing places.

Have a good week.

Talking often seems out of place when you are surrounded by so much natural beauty. I am of the opinion that mother nature silently silences us with her magnitude. This is how she retains that connection between "us and her" - as you said.

Many years ago, when I had just left my last place of employ - my dad said I could set up a desk in his business, so that I would have "somewhere to go to" in the mornings - smart man (I love my dad!) - It was not a pretty space, as my dads business at the time, was compressed air - so plenty of grime, grunge and noise about - BUT like I said, it was a place for me to go to in the morning... had I NOT had that, I probably wouldnt have developed the discipline I did working on my own.

NOT my point - lol, my point is... one of the ladies that worked in the "upstairs" section where I was situated too... was Charlene. She was a born again Christian. On one particular day, after our brunch of SLAP CHIPS on BREAD ROLLS lol, we got into a conversation. She asked me "why do you wear those crystals around your neck?" to which I replied, "because specific stones hold specific properties, not unlike the fruit and vegetables we eat". Her face skewed a little, and her nose did that little "flinch" of disdain as she uttered the words "I don't think the Bible approves of such practices".

"Well, I don't read the bible much Charlene" I told her, "but can I ask you one thing - How do you feel after you have been out for a hike in the mountains, or a walk on the beach?!" to which she responded "I feel great!" - "and God created all of that, right?! The rocks, the mountains, trees, sand and soil - yes?! "Yes." - "So why is it then that you find it so offensive that I wear one of "Gods Miracles" around my neck and have an appreciation for the power it holds?"

She smiled and said "good point".

I could have made a post out of this comment, lol!

I like the opening line...One day I'll be able to get my message across so perfectly and succinctly...Although, probably not.

Silence is undervalued by society these days as is that connection to the world around us...It's something I actively pursue though, not just on the weekends, but all the time.

For a moment I drifted off on a tangent based on slap chips on bread but came back to the light and ready the rest of your comment. At first I thought Charlene was going to take you down a familiar path but Jaynie Lea prevailed and helped her see the light. Nice work.

People get so fixated on their way, thought or opinion that they fail to see it replicated all around them, just in different ways...Her hike, your crystals...Same same, just different.

You do. Daily!

Bingo! :)
