The other day, I came across a book called A New Way to Bake at a bookstore. It introduces how to make vegan desserts with simple ingredients. I wondered whether to post about this in a food-related community, but since this is more of a book review, I’ll be sharing it with Hive Book Club 📕
To summarize … if you’re interested in vegan baking, this book is a must-read. The gorgeous photos are a delight to look at, the ingredients are straightforward, and even someone like me, who’s not confident in baking, was able to follow the recipes and create delicious treats with ease. Among the vegan baking books I’ve purchased in the past, this one is by far the best.
What drew me to this book was that it didn’t rely on mysterious ingredients like margarine or vegan cream, which are often featured in vegan baking books. While high-quality, minimally processed vegan margarine and creams are becoming more accessible, it’s always preferable to bake with simple, everyday ingredients in my kitchen if possible.
Whenever I buy a book, I try to support local bookstores by purchasing in-store. However, it's easier for me to read in English, so I ordered the English version online. Once the book arrived, I went to organic shops to buy some of the commonly used ingredients—like Mascovado sugar, cornstarch, and vanilla—and thought about which recipe to try first. I decided to make chocolate cookies, and to my surprise, they turned out to be an incredible success on the first attempt.
I used to think of soft, chewy American-style cookies as something I’d only buy from a store. But if I can make such delicious cookies so easily with simple ingredients, I’ll happily bake them at home from now on.
The book also includes tips, like blending liquid ingredients to emulsify them, which was very helpful. Cleanup was easier than usual, which makes me even more eager to bake again soon.
There’s also a YouTube channel by the author where you can watch recipe videos. It’s a great way to preview how the recipes come together before deciding to buy the book.

As I’m writing this post, I’ve got a banana cake baking in the oven. It’s looking great with that beautifully crack on top! The technique for achieving such a neat result was so simple that it felt like a revelation.
When it comes to vegan baking, it’s easy to assume it’s complicated, time-consuming, or requires unusual ingredients. But the recipes in this book are simple, both in ingredients and method, challenging that perception entirely.
For anyone wanting to try vegan baking, I highly recommend "A New Way to Bake."
Happy reading & baking weekend everyone!

That crack at the top of the banana cake makes it look so professional! My oven is hotter at one side so I have to place my bake on the other side to prevent it burning , and that messes up the crack on my cakes, they split in the top edge rather than top center which is slightly annoying.
It was the same for ours. And worsly ours heated up so hot burning everything on 240 degrees in the end. It made us decide to replace it ...
The technique for the top is that, you can make a line on top, drizzle oil and then bake! No trick like opening the oven after 7 minutes and make a cut on top. Actually I knew this for bread but never thought about doing the same for pound cakes. Simple tips shown in the book help me improve my baking skill a lot already 😊
What a great idea!'m going to try that next time. Thanks for that tip!
Thanks to the book 😁 Fingers crossed!
They look just like real cakes and cookies! 😂
Thank you for the link to the youtube channel, that's good to have a browse before buying.
They are real ones 😆 At least I could eat them 🍪
I'm teasing 😂

I imported photos from my camera. Here is the final result!
Without a doubt this book is very good. I didn't know about vegan baking, but these pictures look really delicious, I'll have to look for it.
I must say the book was the best vegan cooking book I've ever read. It's more and more in Germany since there are quite large population of vegans. I myself is a vegetarian but I'm happy to learn based on my interest and for my vegan catering business :)
That's a very nice book, am about to dive into the YouTube channel
Yes yes, I recommend the channel. I didn't know the channel before I buy the book. It's an interesting modern way to combine book and digital content. Good for both readers and future readers, and author.
I've gone through the channel,he has interested vegan recipes and I would be trying most of them soon.
I particular love the way he manipulates ingredients and turn them into delicious treats ❤️
