I don't know if many of you are familiar with coconut sprouts but have you already tried eating them?

Greetings everyone,

Today I’m going to share with you how to harvest a coconut sprout from the coconut fruit shell and let’s see what’s inside.

Recently I made some coconut oil for my hair treatment and then I realize that we have a couple of matured coconut at the back of the house that has sprouted already so decided to use it since it can produce more natural oils than those regular ones.

  • Did you know that we locally call or describe coconut sprouts as buto and it may sound funny but buto refers to in English words as Vigina some also call it bula which also means bubble.

To start up I choose just a regular size of sprouted coconut so that inside will gonna have just the right size of sprouts and the right amount of coconut meat for my desired oil. Every time I do peeling coconut husk it makes me proud of growing up in the mountain because it makes me realize that I’m talented enough to do things right since most people are having a hard time doing this.

After the peeling process I removed the stem and left with this- isn’t it cute? It’s like a face with two eyes a nose and a mouth.

Moving forward I cut it open and this is how it looks like inside. Here you can see a spherical shape and inside it is a sponge-like cotyledon.

Coconut sprouts can be determined its size by the size of the stem germinated and the sounds of the coconut water inside. If we shake and it sounds like less water or no water at all it means it has a large sprout inside.

Here is what it looks like inside if we take a bite. They have crunchy water and slight sweetness inside. It also has a health benefit because 66% carbohydrates and 64 percent is soluble sugar. They also contained considerable amounts of dietary fiber and minerals particularly manganese, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus. source here, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprouted_coconut.

Anyway, coconut sprouts have been one of my all-time favorite snack since I was a child and just to make a short story my grandfather used to save coconuts and make it Copra for selling and get money from it but I cut it open in advance secretly and it will make it stay longer and will let the weight lighter while waiting good enough for selling.😅 Good old day I just remembered him and I’m missing my grandpa now.🥺

Anyway moving forward this is all for now I hope you enjoy my content and let me know if you already taste this and how it tastes to you. I'll be happy to hear back from you 😁.

We call it botbot and this is so yummy. My favorite snack too specially the smaller one.

Nice to hear that, I either like the smaller one because it is cruncher and sweeter😋.

I absolutely love this and will try to find our sprout my own. Never seen it here in Cambodia but we have lots of coconut trees here. Thanks for sharing

I hope you can find one and if not you can just simply place a coconut on a side or better where moist soil is and just leave it there for some time and you’ll see them sprout. Anyway thanks for stopping by @amy-goodrich. Best regards!

I didn't know about this. We had so many sprouted coconuts in the past but then we planted them in the garden again instead of opening them up.

I think here in Batangas we simply call this as "tubo" (sprout) I cannot remember exactly. But what's so vivid in my mind is how my late grandpa would call me each time he opens a coconut that has this. He knew I loved it so he calls me first to give it to me. Oh, such memories!

Yes, same as me. Grandpa knows the best! Thank you for stopping by kababayan🥰.

!LOL

I asked my dog what's two minus two.
He said nothing.
