One of the most iconic images associated with Australia is the kangaroo; there's others, but I feel that should someone see a picture of a kangaroo they'd immediately think of Australia...unless they're a fucken idiot (so many of them out there) and have no clue where kangaroos come from.
It's said that in ideal conditions, wetter years, the kangaroo population in Australia sits at around 50 million, about two kangaroos for every single person in the country. (The population fluctuates, depending on conditions, between about 35 million and 50 million.) It's an estimate of course, but an educated estimate.
Kangaroos hop through our major cities like Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, catch buses, work at McDonalds, drive taxis, go to the pub and...ok, none of that at all to be honest; they are found in residential areas though, areas where scrubland is present nearby and those hoppy little (and really big) buggers are literally all over the entire country...and even on Hive. This post at least.
I've added a few photos of some kangaroos I saw lazing around and I thought I'd stick the hoppers into a post and see how good you folks are at spotting kangaroos.
The kangaroo count
All you have to do is study the images, all of the same group of kangaroos, and work out how many you reckon are in the images. If you want to have a crack at it, put your answer in the comments below.
A reward for your effort
I'll be issuing some pretty legit rewards to some of those who answer so if you're interested in testing your kangaroo spotting and counting skills and like legit rewards then have a go. If not, then do not.

Edit and answer: Five kangaroos...that I could see...maybe more.

I read going to say for but I think there is five!
So many roos, to an non Australian that number always surprises!
Way more kangaroos than people!
Hope they don't mutate into support intelligence and take over!
I know right? A kangaroo revolt.
I have examined the images through a magnifying glass and can say with some certainty that there are 5 kangaroos...and you know I am never wrong about anything.
Hahaha. Brilliant! it even looks like me:)
I was thinking that, but You said it out loud... 😳
Was it the pencil that sold it.?
Hahaha. No! It was the ears!
It's pretty difficult to see but there's five, at least five that I can see. There was more up the hill but not in the photo. I circled them and edited the image into the post above.
And your legit reward? There it is below, a cool quote.

For me? My very own quote? I shall frame it immediately and hang it alongside the many glowing tributes to my meticulousness and accuracy.
After analyzing the three photos, I think there are five kangaroos in the group, but be careful, one is staring at you in the first and last photos. I think you should run away!
I imagined getting on a bus and seeing a kangaroo... it would be very funny! Here in Hive there are many of them.😂
It's pretty difficult to see but there's five, at least five that I can see. There was more up the hill but not in the photo. I circled them and edited the image into the post above.

He who wishes to be obeyed must know how to command - Niccolo Machiavelli
Perfect quote!!! I studied Machiavelli, nothing is random, that quote will be useful to me, thank you!!🤗
It is hard for me to see on my tiny laptop screen, but I am kinda guessing 5. Then again it may be 4 and a pile of brush. Anyway, I still hope to one day get to Australia and expereince it. KNow I'm always joking about how everything can killl you there, but it seems so amazing with all of its wildlife and varied landscapes.
I'll post the number tomorrow.
It's an amazing place mate, I hope you get to travel here, so much to like. And of course, so much that wants to kill you. You're a Marine though, you'll be fine.
Yeah, I’m sure I’d be okay too. I still want to fight that kangaroo you told me about lol.
You'd probably give it a good crack and I reckon you and the kangaroo would come out equal.
Anyway, so it's pretty difficult to see but there's five, at least five that I can see. There was more up the hill but not in the photo. I circled them and edited the image into the post above.

No legacy is so rich as honesty - William Shakespeare
Well, it looks like I did see 4 and a brush pile after all becuase I did not see one of those you circled. My fine reward was not deserved then and I feel like a twat for receiving such a magnificent prize. However, the round is down range and I must now aaccept it most humbly.
It's really difficult to see them at the best of times let alone on a screen from a shitty image. You did well though.
Group effort here. @pooky-jax agrees on 4 Roos and an Ant/Termite Mound.
I told her there were two together but she disagreed. My guess would be 5.
This was us after the disagreement...
She pushed you through a fence? You probably deserved it. 🤣
No doubt about that.
Tolerates me or Loves me...
Maybe Both?
Probably both depending on the situation at hand. Same as mine does. 🥴
Ok, so it's pretty difficult to see but there's five as you say, at least five that I can see. There was more up the hill but not in the photo. I circled them and edited the image into the post above.

Rewards are nice, but I am here for the fun. Kelly and I had a few laughs over it.
That is golden to me. I was teasing her because she did not have her contacts in and her glasses were on top of her head.
I was like how thee hell can you even see the 4 your claiming. It was a good little moment in time.
That's what I look like when I'm looking for Sydney Sweeney.
In addition to kangaroos, I associate Australia with boomerangs, the Sydney Opera House, giant anthills (is that the pile of dirt I see in the pictures?), and the image of Aborigines on the prairie.
As for counting, my old eye, on the screen of my mobile phone, only managed to spot 5 kangaroos.
There's so much more to Australia than the Opera House and Aboriginees. A shame people don't know more about it.
It's pretty difficult to see but there's five, at least five that I can see. There was more up the hill but not in the photo. I circled them and edited the image into the post above.

Never underestimate the power of human stupidity - Robert A. Heinlein
Oh my god, the more I looked, the more of them appeared... I counted 14 — 5 in the first photo, 5 in the second, and 4 in the third. 😅
Clue: it's all the same group so don't try and combine all three images into a total.
Okay, then my bet is 5 — unless they’re hiding in the trees. 😄
It's pretty difficult to see but there's five, at least five that I can see. There was more up the hill but not in the photo. I circled them and edited the image into the post above.

Haha, that’s the first time I’ve heard that — but it’s absolutely true! Thanks.
I think there are six Kangaroos in the image. I'm not sure it's six but I found like as six.
Not a bad guess.

I think, it's 6 kangaroos. I have a shitty full HD screen at work so maybe the number would be different, if I was watching my 4K monitor at home haha. I will leave the count on 6 atm.

I hoped that the pile back there was a kangaroo too haha
Edit: Never mind, that's a 5. I made a fatal mistake lol.
They stand out pretty well against the green, when. It's summer they're very difficult to spot at times.
Unfortunately, I wasn't in time for the guessing game! It's cool that you get to see them out in the wild like this. Do they ever approach you or mostly keep their distance?
Unfortunately, I am one of those idiots! When I see a picture of a kangaroo, I immediately think of the San Diego Zoo. They have an exhibit there where we got to see Kangaroos up-close (pictured below). Hopefully after reading this post I'll think of Australia first and not be an idiot! 😆
Kangaroos = San Diego. Makes perfect sense! 🤣
That's a couple really small hoppers you got there, I'm used to bigger ones, but one generally needs to get into the outback to see them at their full height.
As for kangaroos in the bush, nah they don't generally approach humans and are quite skittish mostly. I've been out hunting (pigs) where I've managed to stalk inside of 50 metres of a roo (from down wind) but they're clever buggers and most often bugger off. (I have good stalking skills too.) I guess it depends on the conditions, but no, they will not generally approach humans unless they're in a zoo scenario or heavy tourist area and accustomed to humans.
These ones were small. They had some larger ones too but I can't tell how they compare to the ones in your photos.
Makes sense that they behave like typical wild animals. Your story of stalking them reminds me of the guy in Jurassic Park stalking the Raptors... "clever girl." I imagine you hiding in the bushes with a rifle and scope just like him as they bugger off. 😁
I'm not sure how I'd go against Velociraptors, but I'd give it a crack, stalked some interesting things in my day.
Guess we won't get to see that for real, too bad, it would be entertaining.
What's the most interesting thing you've stalked?
I'll do a Velociraptor stalking video and post it. If I get torn to pieces and eaten it should, at least, make for funny viewing.
As for the latter question...I'll plead the fifth, this is the interwebs.
I know you're not a fan of AI, but that would be hilarious to see as an AI video 😂
I'll use my imagination for the other question...haha.
Huh. I'm late to the game, crazy days. I counted 6, but I guess one was a tree :-D Riverflows posted a few pics of kangaroo the other day, it even had a name. That was really cool. I guess for non-Australians those are just he most fascinating animals. Also, it's very interesting that the populations fluctuates by 30%. That's a lot. Imagine human population doing that...
There's a book (now a series of books I think) in German called "The Kangaroo Chronicles". It's a hilarious critics of our times, about an communist kangaroo living together with an anarchist artist. The best jokes only work in German, unfortunately.
Five is the number, a few guessed it but by fluke I think as it wasn't very clear.
It'd be interesting for the human population to decline by 30%...but a 90% decline would be preferable.
Yeah, I saw the edit after counting - that's when I realized I had counted a tree. Or a stump. Just something brown-ish that wasn't a kangaroo.
i spotted these 5, unless there is an other tricking me somewhere, but they should be those
do they randomly walk on streets or gardens btw?
I'll reveal the number later on today.
Yes, in some Reason they are going in front gardens, depends on the location. They're not found in cities though, not often anyway, as they don't really like people. They avoid contact. If there's a bit of scrub land nearby then they're usually around somewhere.
That's good, at least no incidents or people hunting them away
Ok, so it's pretty difficult to see but there's five as you say, at least five that I can see. There was more up the hill but not in the photo. I circled them and edited the image into the post above. One of the "kangaroos" you circled is a branch.

Oh that one on the most right was pretty tricky!
that's a good quote, this one reminds me one that we say here "Where there’s a will, there’s a way."
It was pretty well hidden and doesn't look kangaroo-shaped I guess. An easy one to miss.
I only see 4 kangaroos. Someone else said 5, but I may be handicapped by peering at a phone screen instead of looking at it on my laptop. Shitephotos, or shitescreen?
Using a phone will inhibit the opportunity I think, even for me and I know how many were there. I'll reveal the number later today.
Ok, so it's pretty difficult to see but there's five at least five that I can see. There was more up the hill but not in the photo. I circled them and edited the image into the post above.

I saw 5 kangaroos, I looked at the picture several times.
Hmm, a fair guess.

I'm going to go with 7. I have a feeling there are some that aren't super obvious. Then again, I end to overthink things sometimes! That is pretty crazy just how many there are there. Plus I know you have said they can be destructive, so it makes sense why you do those extra curricular activities.

Ah, I guess I was making it harder than it had to be. I see a lot of people guessed correctly at 5. Thanks for the great quote. I was riding around with my buddy in his Jeep last night and I mentioned some of your posts to him because all the buttons in his jeep made me think of the tire inflation system you posted about a while ago. Plus he owns, shoots, and maintains a lot of firearms as well.
He sounds like a legit chap indeed.
They can be really has to see when they stay still and in summer conditions, but they stand out pretty well when it's green like this. They mostly don't do much harm, only when there's a farming operation that is fenced to keep livestock in and such things like that.
That two per person stat cracked me up, and the bit about them taking buses actually made me pause. The way you turned it into a perception game is neat and makes the brain do math it didnt plan to :) From an accountant brain this feel like reconciling a ledger that keeps jumping around, fun and mildly evil. Defintely coming back for the reveal and I hope my guess doesn't embarrass me.
I'll reveal the number tomorrow, it'll be interesting to see who gets it right.
Nice, I’ve locked in my tally and I’ll be back for the re;veal. As the ADmin of this little challenge, your making me double-check my ledger already :) Maybe toss a tiny hint next time?
