messenger is reading messages from the memo part of transaction?
did you talk with Peak Open Projects people? They are working on messenger that is off chain but uses hive accounts and keys for identification and encryption.

This is what I intend to do - finish the messenger based on transaction-memos. Till the time, if peak-open-projects have exposed the APIs, I'll implement it in the-hive-mobile.app
After completing transaction-memo based messenger, I am also thinking of integrating the leo-threads.
