Tuesday is always a good reason to bring up the past and to mostly ignore the present-day music, though today I have one that is not 40 years old for once.
Joe Jackson – Steppin’ Out (Night and Day – 1982)
Joe Jackson, I had completely forgotten about him, and in 2005 when I sold my entire 45 7' collection via eBay, a lot of songs went west and I am trying to remember what was in that vast lot of manufactured plastic.
I have been sending @dismayedworld obscure songs that are not played anymore from her favourite decade, and 'Steppin' Out' came to me in a flash of grey memory.
Joe appears to be still playing and remarkably still has his original voice. Unlike some he never attempted falsetto or high notes and that lack of strain is going to keep your voice going longer if not exerted.
I was suffering through Kwiksave when ‘Steppin’ Out’ was released and I do recall one of the other Stock Lads (one who had a brain), mentioning Joe Jackson and to check out his older hits which I missed.
‘It’s Different for Girls’ was one of those and I have duly added both to my personal collection for posterity.
Lindsay Buckingham – Trouble (Law and Order – 1981)
In 1981 I was a young lad, quite obsessed with Fleetwood Mac and drooling over Stevie Nicks like most adolescents. The slightly disappointing 'Tusk' was released the year before and then I heard this 'Trouble' song on the radio.
What the fuck was all that weird shit at the start of the song? Whatever, it didn't last long and broke into something that sounded very 'Maccish' if that's a term.
I had no idea at the time (due to Neanderthal TV and NO MTV), that there was more than a hint of other Fleetwood Mac artists playing on 'Trouble' and I was to find out one year later that it could have fitted very well with on the forthcoming 'Mirage' album that I went out and bought shortly after release.
I see Mick Fleetwood on drums and the backing singers with their 'Ahhhhhhs' sound remarkably like some other members of his band though they don't appear in the video.
Sia – Chandelier (1000 Forms of Fear – 2014)
Naming something ‘recent’ that is now ten years old is admittedly ridiculous. If you had mentioned a song to me in 1982 that was a hit in 1972, I would have said ‘ancient’ and ‘glam rock’, but times have changed and this still seems recent to me.
@steevc will be appalled that I am advocating such ‘pop’ that goes with the style of one-two-three, in a similar fashion that ‘Dua Lipa' sings in that other 'recent' track 'New Rules'.
Is this the new trend that one has to build up to the crescendo with the first three numbers of the English language or something because I find it irritating. Sia also has that annoying warbled scratchy voice that flickers up and down and she appears to be imitating the late Amy Winehouse.
You might by now figure that I am not a fan of Sia or this song, but the chorus soars and is very ear-catching, even to a sore curmudgeon like me.
The video of the young dancer got a lot of attention at the time, but fuck the video, can this singer perform live and get those highs just like Whitney used to before she got addicted to cocaine and ruined her life?
After viewing several that were obviously mimed I did find one 'live' performance that was half decent. So she can sing, and now she needs to pull out another 'Chandelier'. I haven't been impressed with anything else.

Sia is not bad I think. The missus likes her, I think her catchiest vocal is in Titanium which for played an awful lot on this house and still does. More I think I'm quite a fan of it!

Yeah, they all love doing that with the fade in/out. She at least has a distinctive voice despite it being marmite-ish!
She is not bad or annoying, just.. there are more bright personalities with intresting vocal, that are self-made, not producer/marketing/manager-made. imo.
There are indeed many but it is the ones pushed by the marketing that saturate the airwaves and boy does she saturate them!
I think that has been pretty much the only decent Sia song. The dancing I found abit weird tbh, but the token hair style and branding seemed to work and grab alot of attention.
I used to think she has one decent song too (I even keep it at my HD) - 'Academia'. But I should confess, I did not examined her back catalogue, just not intrested in the stuff like this.
I looked up a few more and her relationship with 'Maddie' (the girl dancer) supposedly got out of hand later. She tried to keep the formula going with the videos, but apart from this, I couldn't hear anything.
If you listen to some of Sia's other stuff, it actually isn't that bad. She has a Christmas album that is kind of good too. I love the song Stepping Out. I will have to dig into more of his stuff. That xylophone part at the end is just magic every time I hear it.
I think you're an eighties guy at heart with comments like that, with a tolerance to music that I envy. I wish I could get into it, like you.
It's pretty rare I come across something that I don't enjoy. I can usually find a little good in just about everything. The majority of my childhood happened in the 80's, so that makes sense!
Noticed a familiar name... actually it is the title that baited me :P I also count her - ... well, maybe I would not use the word 'recent' but lets say, she's from a new generation of artists. Late 2000-es sounds like "new" to me, cause probably there happened no breakthrough to another level, style, or smth like that.

To me, this performance indicates her vocal range and typical singing style. I would call it "pale" and banal, the manner of singing is (let's face it) "uninteresting." I tried to listen to more of her songs maybe decade ago or so, but wasn't interested and closed the book.
In the track you chose for this #ttt, I clearly see not her singing, but the work of the sound producer and voice-tuning thingie - this crap became fashionable exactly in the 2000s, I believe. The producers made her sound in a way that she herself couldn't. Not good. Better move on.
Hmm, I wonder how many more soaring choruses make use of such manipulation. It generates a great sound, but how real is the person behind it?
'Chandelier' remains on my very short list of tunes beyond 2010, I wish I could find more but can't be arsed looking through the masses to find any.
I haven't examined this issue specifically, but I've heard rumors that Radiohead's Thom Yorke (once known for his fantastic voice) has his voice spoiled for a while, in the studios his vocals are also being polished using auto-tuning. (Many rock stars don't know how to take care of their voices).
sometimes that does not matter, if you like the recording, you can simply enjoy it without digging more into a performer?.. especially when there is not much of a real person behind it, but a marketing product, lol 😜

Agreed, but on a live performance, hearing an ill vocal would do nothing for me. Some of these 'old dudes' seem to have retained their voices and others have gone. I was listening to a recent 'Phil Oakey' yesterday, and he sounds just like the Phil of old, live and now.
Hearing ill or wrecked vocal of an artist who once was great (and you remember it) would add more sadness, would only make you remember about the better times, better versions, instead of enjoying performance. imo.

The thing about this one is that it is a design that is meant to be sticky. Although I like this song you selected from her, not only because it's a call to live intensely in the present. Amy has more elaborate lyrics and a provocative darkness.
They can't but they try, I can hear it. I love Amy, she was unique. In 2007 I was working in London and travelling the underground daily. There was a free newspaper named the Metro. Every day I read about Amy's antics within the pages, they would not leave her alone and it was always negative.
Joe Jackson had some great songs. My friend @hockney saw him a few years back and he still had the old drum machine for some of the songs.
That Lindsey Buckingham song is not great in my opinion. I've heard him play guitar much better. The video is a bit silly, but probably done on a low budget.
I'm aware of Sia, but don't pay her much attention. She can obviously sing, but then they use some annoying auto-tune (I assume). The 1-2-3 thing is a bit of lazy songwriting, but when her video can get 2.6 billion views (!) then I guess she can't complain. I'd never seen it before, but it's not what I would seek out. I tend to watch obscure shit.

I never heard trouble before and it really does sound like some other fleetwood mac stuff from the time, which I guess shouldnt be a surprise. I think it reminds me of Empire State from mirage.
And yes, the lassie appears to be able to sing ! There is a Sia song I really like, but I can never remember which one. It has these dancers dancing around a cage or something like that - any ideas ?

Taking me back now, Mirage was a little low key compared to Rumours and Tango in the Night, I especially like the title track 'Tango' and that great guitar outtro.

I only like the chorus of 'Chandelier', the rest is typical 'new stuff' that sounds much the same as most other songs. Joe was great, a fantastic vocal.
