To put you in context, I would like to tell you that most of the people of Ethiopia and Somalia are engaged in livestock and agricultural activities, earning their livelihood by raising animals, or through their crops that depend on the rains. Recurrent droughts at the time eroded their assets: crops were lost and animal husbandry was complicated by the lack of water, leading to one of the most catastrophic famines between 1984 and 1985, which resulted in the deaths of nearly one million people in these parts of Africa. At the time of the famine, Ethiopia was experiencing a civil war and foreign nations were at first reluctant to become involved in providing food aid.
