Sunflower Photo Shoot

in Photography Lovers9 months ago (edited)

Two days ago I wanted to take some photos of the sunflowers. We have some in the garden, just for fun as are not the usual type of which you can harvest the seeds of. My dad always sows some seeds to have a few sunflowers just for fun. I love them as they look great and a nice subject to photograph, especially when the sky is clear and the sun is not so strong.

So two days ago, when I saw how beautiful they are, the first instinct was to reach for my phone and take some photos. Right away I started shooting, but mother nature had other plans for me. The wind started blowing and my photo shoot turned out to be a complete disaster. I'm not a quitter, so despite the strong wind, I still tried to take some photos. So I was pushing the button repeatedly, but by the time the photos were taken, the sunflower was literally out of the picture and I had only the background on the photo. The only choice I had was to give up.

Yesterday was rainy, gloomy, nowhere near the ideal weather to take photos, not to mention the dirt I would have to step in in order to get to the sunflowers. Today on the other hand was nice and sunny, there was no wind at all, so it was my chance to do a sunflower photo shoot, or at least try to. If you like sunflowers, come with me :)

It's not the first time I'm taking photos of sunflowers, so I know what to focus on and just like in case of other flowers, the flower itself may not be the most beautiful. Surprised? Don't be, come with me to show you what I'm talking about.

20230809_180307a.jpg

I tried to find the best angle, so my shadow won't be on the photo.

20230809_180316a.jpg

While I was walking among the flowers, looking for the right angle, noticed something strange. They say the sunflowers are always following the sun, which means they should face the sun. Some of ours were facing the sun, while others weren't. Sooooo, I'm confused now. Are our sunflowers fake? 😂 Are they protesting? Or what is going on here?

This one for example turned its back to the sun, that's why the photo is as it is. This was literally 180°C from the sun. Why? I have no idea.

And here comes the fun part. Remember, I told you, the flowers may not be the most beautiful thing? This is not a bud anymore, but not a flower either, it's in between and green. But I love it.

Look at this beauty! How can you not like it? It's an absolute beauty in my eyes.

Now fun fact about sunflowers. I had no idea, just found out today, but it's interesting.

Generally, each floret is oriented toward the next by approximately the golden angle, 137.5°, producing a pattern of interconnecting spirals, where the number of left spirals and the number of right spirals are successive Fibonacci numbers. Typically, there are 34 spirals in one direction and 55 in the other; however, in a very large sunflower head there could be 89 in one direction and 144 in the other. This pattern produces the most efficient packing of seeds mathematically possible within the flower head.

A model for the pattern of florets in the head of a sunflower was proposed by H. Vogel in 1979.[17] This is expressed in polar coordinates

r = c n , {\displaystyle r=c{\sqrt {n}},}
θ = n × 137.5 ∘ , {\displaystyle \theta =n\times 137.5^{\circ },}

where θ is the angle, r is the radius or distance from the center, and n is the index number of the floret and c is a constant scaling factor. It is a form of Fermat's spiral. The angle 137.5° is related to the golden ratio (55/144 of a circular angle, where 55 and 144 are Fibonacci numbers) and gives a close packing of florets. This model has been used to produce computer generated representations of sunflowers. source

How cool is that?

Beautiful shots Erikah, I never liked sunflowers until I migrated to Ukraine. At first glance at the sea of sunflowers, I fall in love with them.

Wow, I'm surprised you never liked sunflowers. Indeed, when you see so many, like a sea of sunflowers, it can change you. I saw quit many fields this year, but could never stop as we were either on the highway, or the road was too narrow to stop. I'd love to take some photos.

Amazing photographs! There is just something special about these plants when you get that crisp detail on the photographs. Also the same with fig tree leaves. The detail a photograph can take just makes it so much more special.

Some of them are real shy, not wanting to show themselves to the sun.

Thank you for sharing and keep well.

Indeed, there's something special about these flowers, they are not like any other flower, created by mother nature. I hop to have some next year as well as it's a pleasure to look at them, not to mention take photos :)

Thank you fr stopping by. All the best :)

The pleasure is all mine! My girlfriend loves sunflowers, so I must try and grow some actually. Your post might just actually inspire me to get some seeds! Keep well.

I hope you can grow some. I believe spring is coming soon over there so don't miss the occasion :)

Yes! In a couple of weeks. So I need to get the garden ready. I also want to plant various herbs. Ample reason to get myself into the garden.

I like the sunflower with no flower. That is cool and I have never seen that before. Very informative I now know more about sunflowers. Now I won't be using the formula you provided, haha. I'm hoping to see some commercial fields of them next week when I'm on vacation. 🌻 😁

That's my favorite too. Each flower is interesting in its own way, but there's none like thee sunflower. I need to study that formula, but I have a lot on my plate, so it'll have to wait.

Enjoy your vacation and take some photos of those beautiful sunflowers :)

your shots on some sunflowers are so nice, and also seen the sunflowers growing so lushly, it's really a perfect beauty to look at i guess everyone must like those flowers 😍

I don't know if everyone like them or not, but if you look at them, what's not to like right? :)

all will fall in love at first sight of these sunflowers 😃

Amazing detail in these sunflower images. The floret pattern fact is mind blowing. We sometimes forget that there is an intricate mathematical beauty underlying outward appearances.

You are right, the Fibonacci numbers can be found everywhere, we just don't know it.

I really love sunflowers.. I saw a wonderful story just recently (on the news I think) of a gentleman who planted a field of sunflowers for the lady he so loves. Looked spectacular, as does your photos. Thanks for sharing and keep well my friend.

A big field of sunflower is my dream. I've seen several lately, but we were on the highway, no way to stop. But one day I;m going to focus on this and take a bunch of photos.

That gentleman must have really loved the lady :)
Sorry for the late reply, I don't know how did I skip your comment.

Yeah.. must be wonderful to just run in a field of them! They seemed deeply in love with one another. Thanks for coming back to the reply loool.. keep well my buddy :)

Absolutely lovely sunflower photographs! And you are a master at knowing how to highlight their beauty, quirks and uniqueness! What are the average height of the "stalks" and width of the open blooms? I've seen them grow up to 6 feet with flowers 9"-10" diameter. Birds and squirrels cannot wait for the seeds to ripen! As a math major and geek, I loved the fun fact you provided about the floret formation. Thankfully I won't have to memorize all the formulas to pass a test!

Have a terrific Wednesday, Erikah!

Many hanks dear Nina! I tried to do my best under those circumstances, but the merit is of mother nature, for creating such a stunning flower and for giving me blue sky.

The height of these flowers can vary a lot. These are 1.8m or 1.9m I think, but there were years when we had shorter ones, like 1.6m tall.

We don't have squirrels there, at least I have never seen any, but birds can have the seeds all for themselves.

Nina, thank you for the lovely comment. Wishing you a lovely day 🤗🌷

Amo los girasoles, hace tiempo también salían en mi casa pero al tiempo morían por completo..me encantaron todas las fotos quedaron bellísimas. Y no sabía sobre el patrón de los girasoles súper loco. Saludos 🫂

You can plant new ones. If they used to grow once, you should try to grow them again :)

Haha, i love sunflowers. I too know selfies with them and my aunts also loved the sunflower photos. They felt so young being surrounded with sunflowers.

It gives you a nice feeling for sure, if you can appreciate them :)

Indeed. 😁

I love sunflowers, I use to have one in my balcony and ir really followed the sun si I don't know what happened to yours hahaha 🤔🙄
Lovely photos 💛🧡🌻

On the balcony? I should try it out next year, but the truth is, I travel a lot and don't like to ask others to come and water my lowers. I don't know why these don't turn either.

Hahaha, yeah! My balcony is big and I have many plants. I planted it in a deep pot, it grew, bloomed and gave a big and beautiful sunflower 🌻 that was some years ago, I should plant more again, I love sunflowers 💛🧡
It's strange that your sunflowers don't want to follow the sun 🤔🤣🤣🤣

Hi Erika, I am like the sunflower many times, turning and looking for that beautiful light that projects my soul on those days when the darkness overwhelms my essence, and my thoughts, thank you for reminding me with these wonderful photos and the loving cultivation by the hands of your dad, a very wise man, who knows how to harvest at the right time what makes him happy.🌞🌻

I think we're all like that. It's human nature to try to find better.

Thanks for the nice words @janitzearratia and have a wonderful day 🤗🌷

THANK YOU! Erika... it is true that one feels a lot of security because it is as if the answers you are waiting for coming to you, and that one had no idea that it was what you needed, you just knew that something was missing to concrete...the light of a sunflower with its energy, that of our self-love...

Same to you, have the best day possible 🌻🌞

Very nice pictures, the sunflowers are very beautiful.

Hello dear friend @erikah good afternoon
What beautiful photographs. This is one of the floral plants that I always loved to take pictures of, when we had our garden we planted it every year, in addition, to beautify the place it is very good to attract pollinating bees
Beautiful photos, excellent shots

Thank you. Bees love them for sure as they were there when I tried to take photos.

These photos were spectacular. I am fascinated by sunflowers, I think they are very impressive flowers. Thanks for sharing.

These photos are so beautiful☺️☺️

Thank you, I'm glad you like them 🤗

You’re welcome ☺️☺️

I love sunflower 🌻🌻 the pictures are lovely thanks for sharing this lovely story

I love them too and I hope I'll have another chance to take more photos.

Beautiful photography really appreciate able 🩵

Thank you!

Sun flower is really a beautiful flower. These are infact Little Suns. I love these shoots.

Many thanks.

You capture all different ages of sunflowers (close , semi open , opened ) and photography from different directions which is amazing.

That was the idea, but also, the conditions forced me to do that. Thanks for stopping by.
