This Morning's Milky Way

It's Milky Way season around here! The Milky Way has been rising above the horizon at night, and the conditions all lined up for some photography fun.

The alarm clock went off at 2 am, and I headed to the spot I was originally planning on going to. But the wind... the very strong wind made me change my mind once I go there. My Milky Way exposures are usually about 20 seconds long. Wind and long exposures don't mix well, the wind shakes the camera on the tripod and you end up with a blurry photo. Yes, I know this from experience...

I went to a second location, but strike two!!! That place was even windier. So I headed back home. But on my way, I decided to pull over and check out the shoreline of Donner Lake, to see how it was looking. Very little wind! I found an interesting composition and set up the gear. Third time was the charm! I was happy with this shot and really, it might have even been better than what I originally had in mind, lol.

Shot with the Canon 5DS R and a 16-35mm lens, set at 16mm. The ISO was 1600, the lens aperture was f/2.8, and yes, it was a 20 second long exposure. A tripod and shutter release cable were used. No lens filters or flash. Oh, I did use my headlamp to light up the foreground and dock a touch.

This one is already available for ordering from my new website! Worldwide shipping available... TruckeeTahoePhotos.com - Milky Way Shot

No selfie photo this time but I did shoot a little video. Hopefully I'll have that worked on soon.
Thanks for looking and have a great weekend!!!

Great shot! we have had some clear nights here. I need to get out and take a look. I like the silhouetted trees and the light on the water 👍

Thanks @steven-patrick! My favorite app for figuring out the when and where is Planit.

Amazing! Milky way shots all the way. :D

Thanks @itravelrox! It was so nice to see in person.

An ultimate goal for every photographer. I am not sure if it's possible to use my 50 mm lens, not a wide lens.

Wider angle lenses work best and can capture more of the Milky Way. But I've seen some pretty cool shots taken with telephoto lenses. I'm sure you could get something interesting with a 50 mm...

That's awesome. My 18-55 mm lens doesn't have the f2.8 aperture but my 50mm lens has the f1.8 aperture.

You should be able to get some great ones with that 1.8!

Hmmm... Am impressed, the light's reflection is awesome.... Lovely shot , keep it up

The light was really reflecting off that water well! Glad you like it!

Nice shot! A job well done sir. A perfect shot for a perfect night sky

Wow! That's a great photo. :)

Great shoot! I'm fortunate to just step onto the balcony and see her. It's the perfect location for shooting stars :) but I don't have a suitable lens at the moment 🤔

That's awesome that you get to see it from you balcony! And thank you.

Nice shot
I’d be visiting your website from time to time now

This is a beautiful photo of the milky way and I can watch this all-night long.

Thank you and yes! I feel like I can stare at the Milky Way all night long too, until I get too cold...

Milky ways only seen in videos.

I'm not sure if you can get this app, but there is an app called Planit (www.planitphoto.com) that helps with know where and when you can see it in person.

That mountain and the light's reflection on the lake is amazing, the milky way just completes the awesomeness.

Glad you like all that! I was very happy to finally find that scene.

The result is amazing my friend. failed the first, or second, the tried one might give you great result. Something I should remember. Also the use of another lamp to illuminate the thing in the foreground I should remember as well.

I forget when was the last time I tried to photograph the star at night time. I don't really get the skill just yet, maybe next time.

Astro photography is a lot of fun! And very peaceful. I would definitely recommend trying it again. It can be challenging but like anything in life, it gets easier the more you do it.

Both the morning and night time views are very wonderful and it is very relaxing to look towards the sky.

Wow its really wonderful night scene. The stars, milky way in the sky and light reflection on the water makes the picture exceptional.

OMG the milky way what a phenomenon sadly I have never witnessed it in my real life somehow like I am almost touching 40 years old like where have I been all these years :(.

This is really an amazing shot that is shared here
