Driving winter and a hint of colour

Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face.

- Victor Hugo -

I'm guilty...of complaining about the weather. I tend to melt in summer when the temperatures get up to over 45 degrees, and I whinge about it from time to time. I prefer much cooler weather but - here comes the whinge - I'm total over winter right now! Come on spring, where are you!

Much of winter is blue skies and sunshine here and, whilst reasonably cold by our standards, it's tolerable. We have rain and clouds, fog, wind and all the other typical wintery aspects but there's always many decent days and that allows for loads of outdoor activities. This year though...I don't know, maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy, but it seems the weather has been much colder and, whilst we've not had loads of rain, the days have been overcast and have seemed rather grey, dull and uninspiring.

I took a nice hike yesterday and enjoyed it immensely but today it feels like one of those days on which it's best to crawl into a cave and hibernate like a grumpy old bear. I say cave here, but let's assume I meant, stay in bed and hibernate the day away. Don't worry, I woke up and went to work...Or did I? (I actually did.)

Could this feeling be a by-product of me working so hard over the last few months, I've wondered, or is it really just the weather? Hmm...I am reasonably good at balancing work and life so I don't think it's work-related. That leaves the weather and, because it can't defend itself, I'm blaming it!

Ok, not really...nature is just doing what it always does and as time passes winter will be driven away by spring and everything will be ok again...until it gets hot in summer and I start whinging once more; seasonal whinging I call it.

This weekend I've got a few plans to find a hint of colour in the grey dullness of winter and despite the fact it's forecast to rain a little, there's supposed to be some patches of blue, which I'll capitalise on.

My plan is to head to a place called the Cudlee Creek Forest for some hiking. I plan to hike for five hours or so through typical Australian bushland and the adjoining pine forests that surround the area. There's never many people there and it's likely I'll not see another soul all day - Just how I like it.

I'll be adding a hint of colour by way of a little fire for comfort and ambiance purposes and also to cook lunch on. I'll be searing some sausages and onions on there, which I'll eat with bread rolls and tomato sauce. It's not much, but in the middle of nowhere simple fare like that tastes so much better! I'm looking forward to it and, come what may from a weather perspective, I'll enjoy myself.

The planet has been home to us for millions of years, plants and animals alike. It's provided for us; the air we breathe, water we drink and food we eat as well. It has sheltered us and allowed us to thrive. Sure, the weather can be brutal and extreme as well as nurturing, and yes I whinge about it sometimes too but, in truth, I feel grateful to have the seasons, the wind and rain, sunshine and snow or whatever nature decides is appropriate at the time. It's all of those things that combine to allow life to flourish and, despite my occasional whinging, I'm grateful.

I have to tell you, I like our word better. Whine. Because I can say "You want some cheese and crackers with that whine?".

But since you opened that bottle I might as well partake. I'm tired of the heat. It's not so much the daytime highs but the overnight lows. We have not been under 28C since I got home. Not once. Poor Sam thinks I've forgotten about walking because I won't take him out over 30c and we haven't gone for a week. It's monsoon season so the humidity is (relatively) high the 'feels like' temperature is always 35C or over.

So how'd I do? Was that an post appropriate whinge? I had some cool stretches on my trip like 6C when I woke up at a campground in Nevada. It was cold enough at Crater Lake, OR that I bought more clothing. A cool long sleeve shirt that I'll not be able to wear again until December or so... I'd be ready for a break. Hope you have a good walk and fire cooked meal. Those are unquestionably the best.

Lol, yeah we say whine too and I've been known to say that exact line you quote. It rarely goes down well with the whiner. I rarely give a fuck.

I don't like the heat and you and I get similar temperatures so I'm with you completely.

I took some time to grade the whine/whinge and have decided it's an 8/10 whine and a 7/10 whinge...You got extra points for the whine because...you know, cheese.

Good to see I haven't lost my touch due to inactivity.

Haha, yeah you've slotted back in seamlessly.

I have to tell you, I like our word better. Whine. Because I can say "You want some cheese and crackers with that whine?"

Many years ago, I knew a woman who owned a wine bar in downtown Minneapolis. Instead of "happy hour" pricing, she advertised "whine hour" because she had so often had to listen to her yuppie customers whining about their jobs.

Yummy! I came just for the food! And that kick butt flower that sucked me in. Nice edit.

Sausage and onions in sauce on a roll? Are you related to my mother? It is simple fare like that which has kept me satiated all thee years. And a few other things. You can whine/whinge anytime. It sounds the same to me... winter is too long or summer is too short.

If you keep it up, I bet someone will bring out that cheese tray!

Hi, Galen!

I think your mum (mom for you Americans) and I went went to the same Culinary School of Simplicity and Awesomeness so yeah, it makes sense that our culinary awesomeness is on par. Lol.

I'll whine until that cheese platter arrives and I'll be content...until its gone.

Mail is a little tardy of late, so just scrape the mold off. Hold that whine.

One of the things I’m going to see how I fare in terms of it, is living in an environment where we don’t get snow, at least regularly. Haven’t moved just yet but it’s going to happen sooner rather than later and I’ve got a little bit of uneasiness about the whole thing. I know we will like it and it will be better for us overall but will I miss the winter and the brutal cold with snow? In some ways absolutely and in other ways not at all.

In the meantime I definitely will be enjoying the crisp weather changes that accompany living in New England for now. It’s got so many wonders it’s a lot of fun and the little man has had lots of good adventures so far. We’ve got loads more planned and lined up and I think that’s what keeps me going. Being able to enjoy the places we go as a family. Even when the winter gets bleak and gray despite blue skies. Those days are certainly a mixed bag.

Snow isn't a thing in the part of Australia I live in although it is elsewhere. I like snow, although I've not had to live in it so that could force a change of thinking. 😄

I think we need to all make the most of what we have, the things and places. It's the only way to sink back into the comfort of life as always looking for more, better, bigger or whatever doesn't necessarily bring happiness. I have the impression that y'all will be the happy family you are no matter where you go.

Oh I love the cold weather a lot, it's my favorite season of the year. I find myself complaining when it's hot because my skin scorches and it's not ideal for a hike because one must have a sun hat, sun shade and sun cream most of the time and that's always a lot to carry but with the cold, oh heavens! Go anywhere and get back looking all fresh. It's just the most romantic moment for me.

Cold winters nights are perfect for romantic snuggles right? I prefer the cold because I can always put on mor clothes, but if it's hot, one can only strip off so far, especially in public. 😜

In public? Hahaha! That'll be crazy but I'll definitely like to see and get a good laugh.

That'll be crazy but I'll definitely like to see and get a good laugh.

Laughter may be one reaction for sure, although it's possible there cold be others. I guess it depends on whose naked and whose looking.

I guess it depends on whose naked and whose looking.

True though! Maybe if Joe Biden is then that'll make me roll on the floor🤣🤣🤣🤣.

I feel you, I really can't take the heat. The little bit of winter we get here feels like a blessing, the rainy season too, but we barely got to see any rain this year.

On of that, I heard that it can get quite hot in some parts of Australia. Most of my friends are living in Sydney, don't know how hot it can get over there, but they're doing just fine. I'd guess it's that way because they're used to the menacing heat of Dhaka lol.

Sydney can get hot and it can be just a little humid at times. I'm in Adelaide and it's hotter as the heat pushed down from the centre of Australia.

It can get up to 47 degrees in summer but in more regional areas much hotter. Australia is a vast country so the weather is different depending on where you are. You could have 40+ temperatures in Marble Bar but people could be snow skiiing at Falls Creek on the same day. On that same day it could be super-humidnand hot in Cairns and 23 with clear blue skies in Adelaide.

It's a big country with a lot of diversity.

Yep, Australia has no shortage of space or land; the weather from city to city will differ from time to time, that's for sure.

Have you been here, or would you like to visit?

Not yet, but one day for sure, got a lot of friends and family there.

Since I plan on "travelling the world", I really can't leave out Australia can I? Gotta check out Bondi Beach and train on that outdoor gym haha.

Let's see if that dream comes true or not, for now I'm working towards achieving that dream.

I agree with you although, there's far better beaches than Bondi. Highly overrated. Still, if you're going to be out there flexing your muscles, maybe you'll attract the eye of the ladies. (Hopefully not the other blokes there flexing their own though.) 🤣

there's far better beaches than Bondi

There's just something about the outdoor beachside gyms that I absolutely love.

Hopefully not the other blokes there flexing their own though

Trust me bro, it's mostly the dudes who get attracted. 😂

But in a good way though, they see and appreciate the hard work, whether you're a newb or a pro.

It's funny how we can't be pleased with the weather. When it is too cool we wish for summer days and when summer days are sweltering, we can't stop the thought of a cooler day.

You are lucky if your cooler winters have many sunny clear days. Winter here, although it has some sunny days, has a lot of gray days and it can be quite depressing. I'll take any season but winter (quietly). I do NOT like the cold!

Hope your weekend hike restores you good and proper.

It is the way of it, never happy. We'll, at least when the weather is concerned.

Here where I live the winters have been acceptable, but this year it just feels a little more miserable. I'm not sure why. I've got a lot going on so it could be my own attitude I guess. I'm sure things will sort out eventually, given enough effort on my part.

I'm pretty sure it's been colder.

I really don't deal well with cold weather though and am glad that we don't live anywhere that's actually cold xD

I prefer the cold than the hot, but not too cold. 🥶

Could it be menopause?😆 What is whinge? That stuff is what I'll be doing right now but you know...😒...the world? It doesn't matter because today's my day off and I get to go Hive Shopping😃. It is relaxing in it's own way and helps me unwind. I also plan to do some more writing for my book and read too. I find color jn my cave. Where the wonders of skittishness disappear. Don't mind me. I'm actually in a good mood after getting good hours of sleep. Hehehe. But your plans are great and i know you'd be writing about it sooooo... I'll stick around.

It sounds like you have it all worked out and that's good because sometimes life needs a little attention to detail to get it moving in the right direction.

What is whinge?

See google.

The best cure for bad weather is to get out in it and have fun :) ... Even a downpour can be fun with the right mindset.

Indeed.

I'm also guilty of constantly complaining about the weather, i appreciate this great gift God has given us.

We all do it I think, or have done at some point. We're human and all tend to do similar things.

I am a great loving kind of guy. I like that 40 degree heat. Where you are basically in an oven. I'm known to avoid air conditioning on days like these. To complete a perfect hot day would be too have my gi on and roll for hours cos I never cool down. Then when done a cold beer to top off the hot day. Of course I don't stay under the sun cos that is just silly.

My grandfather was like that. It'd be 40 degrees and he'd say, if only it was a few degrees hotter, it'd be perfect. 🤣

I can deal with hot weather, I'm born and bred in Australia and so have no choice, but I prefer it cooler. I reckon 24 degrees is a perfect temperature.

I don't mind 24 degrees, but my limbs starts giving me whispers of rugging up. I am not sure if this is true with myself but when I played sports growing up I was one of the guys in any team sports that took ages just too warm up.

Sometimes it was the adrenaline dump I get every time I played competitively, even when its a social competition, I get an adrenaline a dump. My siblings all agree I am highly excitable. It is a blessing and a curse.

The dump tends to cool me so much and hence why 40 degree heat is perfect since I can have an adrenaline dump and I am not shivering. We all know the physiological reasons for the shivering, the body protects itself and just starts to pump blood in the organs and leaves the limbs to fend for itself. I think I get that all the time.

My take is a fight or flight trigger gets a hold of me and adrenaline is dumped to help with this perceived danger which is weird since I am not in danger... but I have to live with it so I am forced to seek heat. In fact as I write this reply my fingers are kind of numb from the cold, but also I am excited a little that I have a bit of adrenaline dump, highly excitable. Good in that I am focused at this moment for the reply. But bad because now I am feeling extra cold, mind you it is about 6 degrees here in Sydney.

Yesterday was good since it was sunny. Summer!! Where are thou.

Lol...24 degrees and I'm peeling layers off and blasting the AC in my car! Are you sure you're not a lizard? They have to bask in the sun to warm up before they can get active

Yesterday was good since it was sunny. Summer!

My sister lives in Sydney and I know all about the weather as I've been there a lot. I like to visit but it's far too hectic for me. I was born in a small town and don't like crowds and things. I'm in Adelaide...and even our small population compared to the eastern states is too large for me.

I live in the burbs if Sydney which is not far enough from people. I grew up with lots of people around me but I like that rural living. Got me a small plot of land up near Qld border which is behind someone else's property so its off the road and far from anyone. I like it but need money to develop into a home. One day..

Where was I?

Oh yeah I think I am like a Lizard except my skin does have a tendency to burn in direct sunlight. I just like the heat. That oven air kind of heat. Even better to run or go on a jog with that kind of heat on a run. Muscles are in good hot mood, less chance of injury.

I'd like to visit SA one day to see the vineyards since you guys have good ones there and also to visit the city of churches. I have a tendencies to lean towards churches.

My wife and kids are always asking for me to allow them to turn on the air con in the car. They are all sweating like pigs and I am smiling like I am in heaven...

My wife and kids are always asking for me to allow them to turn on the air con in the car. They are all sweating like pigs and I am smiling like I am in heaven.

People who get into my vehicle tend to call it the refrigerator. I have my AC on a lot.

SA is a nice place, less busy, a little slower than the eastern states but plenty to see and do. I was born and raised around the wine region called the Barossa Valley and can attest for it's amazingness. I don't know much about churches though, the last time I went in one I almost got struck my lightening.

I am not a regular to church but I do walk in the light lol

Good thing you didn't get hit, probably means you are still loved.
