Water In A Bucket

Crabs In A Bucket

Who follows me, knows how much I like the 'Crabs In A Bucket' analogy from the original Steem whitepaper. It expresses a concept in a way that a 5 year old could understand it.

Hole In A Bucket (ELI5)

A man lives in the desert. He has succesfully drilled a borehole and can extract enough water to survive. A wanderer approaches.

"Water! Water, please!"

The man shares some of his water and the wanderer fills up his bucket. The bucket has a hole in it and the wanderer can only drink a few sips, before the bucket is empty again.

"Water! Water!", the wanderer screams in panic.

The man tries to explain to the wanderer, that he needs to fix his bucket first.
The wanderer keeps asking for water, though.
After trying to fill up the bucket a few more times, and more water seeping into the desert sand, the man is afraid, that his borehole will run dry and stops filling the bucket.

"I am happy to give you water, but your bucket is leaking. If you suck the borehole dry, we might both die from thirst", the man explains.

"Water! More water!", the wanderer screams. "Please help me!"

Eventually, the man gives up. He can not help a man, that is unwilling to fix his bucket and tells the wanderer to fuck off.

Buckets Of Hive

Many authors have approached me to help them. This happens a lot.
I have tried helping many people on Hive.
I give them votes, get my friends to vote for their content, I have even just send HBD to some people.

Those that stay on the platform (most just disappear and stop posting) come back with an empty wallet and ask for help again.
I try to help them again, but I am focused on fixing their fucking 'bucket' or better: Teach them how to 'drill boreholes', so they can sustain themselves, or even better: Set them up, so they can help others.

Rarely does this work.
The majority just can't fix their own buckets.
It's so pointless.

Hole In Hive

The same analogy also applies for Hive as a whole.
There is a limited supply of new Hive. Most trickles down from the rewards pools.
Then there are authors, who only ever cash out.
They want more rewards, more money, but never set themselves up in a sustainable way.

These people are like holes in Hive and constantly throw their rewards on the markets.
This creates more supply on the exchanges and puts pressure on the price.
That's why Hive is so cheap.

Most of the people I follow are a net drain on the system.
They leech and never bother giving anything back.
It's so frustrating.

While being amazingly smart at gaining more rewards, they act like they don't understand what at least keeping some HP powered up could do for the system as a whole.

They want others to read their content, but have no time reading and curating the content of others.
I am at a point, where I just want to tell them to get fucked.

Some even have the audacity to only vote for people larger than themselves, making the rich even richer, but never even consider voting for someone smaller than themselves.

It makes me sick.

TL;DR (and for future reference):

I am happy to help you fix your shit, but stop asking for money.
I am over it.

It just seems like a common courtesy to me to keep a decent chunk of ur earnings Powered Up!

I've heard of the "Crabs in a bucket analogy" and I find that very interesting. It's basically about Crabs that are stuck in a bucket and they keep pulling each other back into the bucket once a crab attempts to break out. Haha. Interesting, right? It's like the poor doing things to make sure other poor people remain poor.

This "Hole in a Bucket" analogy is a very interesting one. People can be like that. People are not very interested in doing the bare minimum required to build something sustainable. Instead, they want to be given stuff freely. Some receive and let it go to waste, just like the Biblical story of folks who were given talents.

I like how this is tied to Hive and the things happening here. Everyone has their reasons for whatever they do. Even a criminal will give you a reason for being a criminal. Well, not all reasons are reasonable.

We will do what is right 👍.

I vote for content I like even if the author cashes out because good content is a plus for Hive regardless. However, I do tend to vote for them at a lower percentage.

Actually I have precisely one person I vote for who mainly cashes out - that's @ cahlen - fair play to him, but that's the level of content/ commitment I want to see to justify earning to survive from just content!

I really don't want to lash out at one of the few people that read my content and who's opinion I value, but... Last time I checked (a while ago) you engaged in a different thing and I will write another ELI5 about that concept. This post generated some attention, and maybe that was because of that style...

Anyways, thanks again for checking by, I value your role here on chain highly.
I wish you'd write more about your views on the dynamics at play here (on Hive), you should have the right tools to analyze and describe it...

Now I'll go downvoting that cahlen guy for leeching. (just joking 😝)

I could write a PhD on Hive, an informal one obvs, I'm not really sure how that slipped down my priorities, maybe I'll get back to it in 2024!

It is literally ONE person! NB he is the most extreme off-gridders I know.

I said I was joking and even used an emoji 😓

I know, just in case you weren't aware of the guy, he is worth a follow.

I've always had such a rough time on Steem/Hive mainly because my ADHD distracts me from spending more time on it than I should. It would also be nice if there were more users, but I can't control that. I appreciate your to-the-point take. I agree that a lot of people seem to have used Steem/Hive as a "get rich quick" scheme and don't do anything to stick around for the long-term. I'll be honest, I did that myself at the outset. Yes, my selling off of all my Steem helped me out at the time, but keeping it powered up and remaining active over the years would have been MUCH better in the long-term. Live and learn, I guess.

Did you really bother commenting that many words and then I check your wallet and you got 75 HP and all of it delegated away to a larger account?

It's like a practical joke right? This must be American humor! Glorious! I love it!
I'll give you an upvote for the entertainment value that has. 😂

Yep, I wrote that many words because I wanted to get involved in a discussion. I have it all delegated away because I'm not very active and I can at least get some Hive every day that I can power up daily. I didn't comment in hopes of an upvote.

I was trying to say that I've learned the error of my ways after selling off the 6k SP/HP I had in my account at the end of 2016, because I could have done more to help the platform/economy by holding onto it and using it.

Fair enough.
Nothing wrong with cashing out, when the price is right, but a more balanced approach (at leat keeping some and maybe buying back in at lower prices) would have really been better for everyone involved.
I even regret not cashing out more myself, during certain periods...

I have even just send HBD to some people.

I am one of these people. And I am very grateful for the help. The $300 HBD helped me to financially survive a winter in Hungary. Currently I am on Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. We can say that I fixed my bucket, and that I am still on the Hive blockchain.

I know that most people, who you sent money to, left the platform. You are a kind and generous person, and many people use kind and generous people. But there are grateful people too. I am sure that I am not the only one.

Have a nice day. All the best. Greetings and much love from Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.

Yes the big accounts could do a lot more for the smaller ones.
Hardly see that action.

To be fair:
I got at least 1-2 votes from all big OG accounts here.
I think at some point each one of them tried curation for a little bit.
I was lucky to be there then and that the content was bad then, otherwise, I wouldn't have any Hive.
They got burned, just like I did and it just took me longer to give up.

Now they prefer to not vote at all or for HBD stb, or surround themselves with bootlickers who do the curation* for them.

*that means opportunists and control freaks, who can't generate their own content and don't want to invest themselves, but want easy acces to payouts

It is not so much the (small) authors cashing out, but the whales. Fewer, but they have more of the stake than all other animals combined! Confidence starts from top. If they are not fully committed, you expect that the normal user is?

I'm interested in people who add value to Hive. Of course some are desperate for money and I'll help out some of those, but they could be doing good work anyway. Those who just take are likely to fail.

A delegation of 500 or more HP makes you earn Hivepakistan supporter badge.

Hmm, yeah. Right Right.

I'm voting a lot on tiny accounts with very few votes at all. I bet a lot of them do cash out, but some don't. Distributing the governance token is extremely important.

Do you even remember me?
I spent 1/2 hour translating a text, then send it to you on Discord and you just ignored me.

And it got used!

I remember all exceptional people I ever met anywhere.

Hello

it must be a coincidence that I happened to see this post here. Because I asked myself the question today, how should you support everyone here?

There are so many creators/people who want to tell their story and 99% of them deserve it. But you get to the point that unfortunately you can't help everyone. In addition, as you described, some people take advantage of it and damage the system.

But as so often in life, every action/deed carries a risk. Especially when sending or lending money. Because that's where the true face of the recipient is revealed.

You can then see what they really want to do with the money they have borrowed and they don't even say thank you, although that is part of good manners (or upbringing)

I would describe myself as an advanced beginner and with my level of knowledge I have no idea how to pay out (which is good for the system, as I invest it in the system or it's simply because I live in Germany XD) but of course it's good to transfer the odd euro or two to your account.

Sometimes you have to think about yourself and push your experience and knowledge to set a better example. Maybe even as a mentor.

I'm happy about every like and comment and I'm also very helpful if you ask me nicely.

In this sense, I was very pleased with your contribution and wish you a pleasant day

Danke!

Bin auch Deutscher. 'Auszahlen' geht im Zweifelsfall ganz einfach: bitrefill.com
Eingezahlt hab ich selbst auch nie. Hatte Glück beim trading.

Ah cool. Dann hätte ich mir den englischen Text sparen können 😁

Oh vielen Dank. Werde ich mir Mal anschauen.

Am lässigsten geht's mit v4v.app + keychain;
