Follow Friday - Almost an orca

in #hive4 years ago (edited)

Happy Friday everyone! I reached a milestone today when my Hive Power ticked over 50,000 as some post rewards came in.

HP

This comes after four years on the blockchain and it is mostly earned through being active and connecting. I have bought some $Steem and $Hive, but that represents a few percent of the total. I did benefit by selling my $Steem as that platform became toxic to me after censoring my account. I am also selling my $Blurt airdrop.

This still does not make me an orca as that is based on 'vests' which are what the Hive blockchain uses internally. I need to get to 100 million, but do not have far to go.

Vests

I think we should celebrate our milestones. Increasing your HP is not just about personal wealth as it empowers you to do more good in the form of voting up good content. With more big accounts the votes and rewards get spread wider. The last thing we need is a select few getting the most rewards just because of who they know. This is part of the reason I do these #FollowFriday posts as I want good content creators to get a bigger following.

  • Fellow guitarist @camuel, aka @acousticguitar, powered his way to dolphin this week.
  • Communities within Hive could be key to its success, and I do not mean those that are just there for people to fish for votes. The Urban Exploration Community created by @slobberchops is a good example of this. He is working hard to bring over some of the urbex community on other platforms. @grindle is already established here, with @estonian.stalker a more recent recruit.
  • @ericwilson posted about setting benefactors for your posts and prompted me to do so on this one so that those mentioned get a share of the rewards.

I did put our a call on OpenHive.chat for further suggestions on who to include, but did not get any in time this week. I would encourage people to do their own #FollowFriday posts as a way to help people connect. Hive is lacking in discovery tools and so the old manual option may have to do for now. My strategy is to make my own feed interesting for me. I may not be following some of the biggest accounts, but I can always find something to read, listen to or look at. The last thing I want is a feed that is all posts about Hive, but I do not mind a few so I can keep up with what is going on.

I will include some referral links for the Hive games I am currently enjoying:

  • I expect most people know about Splinterlands. The rules are changing a bit soon to make it less lucrative for the bot accounts.
  • Rising Star is all about building a career in the music industry. No musical talent is required, but it features music from our community (including me).
  • Cryptobrewmaster features another of my passions, beer! Collect ingredients and brew them up to make beer to sell.

All of these games can gain you cryptocurrency and provide an alternative revenue stream in case you are not much of a blogger. I think Hive should have something for everyone.

Hive five!

Congrats Steve! Thanks for the shout out. I really appreciate it.

Well, you don't have far to go.

>>> from beem import Hive
>>> hive = Hive()
>>> orca = hive.get_hive_per_mvest() * 100
>>> round(orca, 3)

I'm at 35,000 HP right now, so I still have ways to go before I reach orca. I was hoping the price ratio of STEEM to HIVE would stay favourable and that I'd be able to reach orca just from selling my STEEM, but it didn't work out that way.

As for Blurt, I've decided to give it a chance and keep my stake in it for a while and see what happens. If it does well, I win. If it goes south, I didn't really lose much. I'm just powering down 10% of it. I'm also running a witness on there.

I think your follow Friday is a good idea. And I agree with the idea that increasing your stake isn't just for personal wealth but also to spread the wealth through more upvotes.

As for games, I only play Holybread so far, but I think Cryptobrewmaster is something that would interest me. I used to make wine from scratch out of different fruits and I also made mead. My brother was a beekeeper back then, and I could get all the honey I wanted for making mead with.

Okay, so about 1700 to go :) That's about eight weeks for me with my average earnings. Without selling my Steem it would take a lot longer to get there.

I think Blurt will struggle to distinguish itself. The main differences from Hive and Steem seem to be lack of downvotes and having to pay for transactions. The latter will reduce some abuse, but if people do spam or otherwise then what can others do about it? For now it looks like even the top posts make cents. I have to focus on Hive for now.

I don't have much experience with brewing. The game is just about clicking stuff, but they point you are sites with brewing supplies and there is potential for various beer promotions.

Goodness gracious!

I remember you a lot smaller 2 years ago.

Selling my $Steem made a big difference as most of that was converted to $Hive. A few other lucky breaks helped too. A few flags from pissed off scammers may have held me back a little, but I can live with that. The community has been good enough to support me and I am keen to give back.

You are too kind.

Great achievement. I usually support you by upvoting the posts that you reblog - we need to reward new people more to encourage them.

Your support is appreciated. We have some responsibility to do good with our stake and I take that seriously.

Nice milestone, congrats! Nice to see what can be achieved if you put your mind to it.

It's been a long slog to get to this, but it's a nice number. If you believe in Hive then I think it can be worth it.

Many congratulations, slow and steady wins the race!

You're probably not that far of being a LEO orca either!

Cheers. I have a couple of thousand LEO. Got over a quarter million SPORTS, but that is worth naff-all.

Yes Steeve mate! Great form on getting to 50k! That's my target (well, Orca officially is but 50k is as good as, think it's 51,500 HP now) by the end of the year, going to be converting the Blurt to Hive and hope to start manually curating with the bigger stake as right now, I've delegated or leased everything out and have about 50HP effective 🤣

See you in Orca land by the end of the year!

I think having more orcas could be very good for Hive. Between us we can control a fair bit of the rewards distribution. I am doing what I can to get more of it to good people and less to those who just play the curation game.

Well, having more people of the right mind set of distribution is important. The way the system is set up, if you have an abundance mindset, then there's plenty of distribution to go around whilst also getting a return on your own account.

I am pretty shit at curating though and have way too much going on outside of Hive so that's why I lease and delegate so at least it goes to the those who are dedicated curators of verified content

Delegating is fine. Some of mine is with @tenkminnows that supports some 'small fry'. The big curation projects have more than enough and I don't care about being paid for it.

Yeah I guess they do but I am on an aggressive HP acquisition programme to get to 50k so trying to squeeze every last bit of juice before unleashing manual upvotes, has been a goal since I was a young naive 0HPer haha

I am trying to optimise my own voting without feeding the curation whales by voting more on comments rather than posts. If you vote after a whale you probably won't make much. Sometimes I get lucky and get in before them, which is how it's meant to work. We shall see how it goes.

It's a game I've never truly got my head around that curation one, good luck with it! Once I get to my target I won't be caring about ROI any more and will look to distribute tokens all I can before they take away the rewards pool. Heard they were getting rid of it?

Congratulations on your achievement!!! You really do deserve it after the effort you put. Thank you for your support as well. Cheers

Cheers to you too. It is a good feeling to make this progress, but then I have put in some effort.

Eh? I would think you would admire my enterprise. $12000 over 4 years is not a great rate.

I meant "There's no justice, that 50K should be mine! All mine!

You should know that capitalism isn't fair.

Of course it is. Poor people shouldn't have money.

    1. They'd only waste it on luxury's like risotto.
    2. Holidays abroad.
    3. Add to congestion and pollution by buying cars.

And think of all the food-banks, charities and charity shops it'd put out of business. All those gainfully employed caring people out on the scrapheap wandering aimlessly round the streets looking for stray cats to help cross the road. :-)

Boris should have you as adviser instead of Cummings

Congratulations. I regret I was not able to turn my steem into hive. I just had to sell it all and literally eat it. It was a great chance to double HP. I am not into games, but am tempted to start exploring those options you mention here. There are so many doing great there

If what you earn can help in your life then that's great. I hope Hive can keep working for you.

Congrats on the accomplishment! You are definitely just about there! That is very exciting. I have been trying to get to a reputation of 72 for quite some time now, but the crawl has been really slow!

It's good to see others making progress too. I just checked and I made it to dolphin in Feb 2017, but I was actually making more then. I would not be anywhere near orca if it hadn't been for the split as that effectively doubled what I had. I guess I can thank Justin and Ned for that at least :)

Yeah, for sure. I was able to give my account a nice little boost as well with some of my STEEM.

Actually I was misreading my old stats that I have in a spreadsheet. I was making a couple of hundred $Steem per week back in 2017 and make about 200 $Hive per week now, so not that much changed, apart from a hump when I was selling $Steem. At this rate it will take me years to get to 100k. I could do without us having another fork as that is too stressful.

Congrats on reaching Orca Steve, another Brit made it!!!!

Thanks, I'm almost there (if you count it in vests). The split from Steem helped me get there sooner.

For some of us, that fork was great, for others is was not so. Blurt appears to have stabilised at 1c per. Congrats on the Orca title, I never thought I would make it to Dolphin once!

I'm not quite an orca yet. Maybe in a couple more months, but I had been hoping to get there this year anyway. Blurt has helped a little with that and I will take what I can get from it. Also had some other airdrops like the Stellar Lumens from Keybase.

It's really not easy to achieve that goal, for many people it takes years of hard work and good investition. Congrats!

Cheers. I feel I have worked for it. I could not really invest lots of money, but I have given my time to Hive and had a lot of fun along the way.

congrats man! thats a lot of HP

keeping the grind up with playing the game your own way!

Thanks. I could have tried gaming the system to make more in the short term, but I am happy with how things have gone.

Wow a huge congratulations to you, 50k is huge. I'm actually in 18k and getting to 20k has been my target before the year runs out. Once again, congratulations

It does feel like a big step up, but it has been coming for a while. I do what I can for Hive and people seem to appreciate that.

Yeah it's amazing. If we all can have collective hive goals it will really do a lot for hive in general. Cheers and congratulations again

Happy Friday Mr. almost Orca!

Congratulations. Huge Milestone
