I agree. The bigger question to me, is if steem will mature.
Tech startups are many. Great concepts may or may not survive or may be taken & implemented by someone else who does it "better".

Yes, I agree with this statement. If Steemit is an experiment and there are fundamental issues that are not being dealt with the scenario that you describe here, the platform could easily be replaced by something similar or 'better'. That's real as day.
My hope is that the community itself can come together and move things in the right direction through new initiatives and cooperative measures that are in the interests of all users, not just a few whales.
I'd like to think so also.
