Ask this simple question

in #ocd4 years ago

Some women have a weakness for shoes. Some for jewelry. Some for bad boys. There are many things which can make us act in a different way when that thing is a constant object of our desire. Neither of above are included on my weaknesses list. If I do have a soft spot regarding people, those are the smart nerdy ones who read and educate themselves. I will always be more interested in a guy who reads a book on a bench in the park than in the guy driving the car/motorcycle like he is the king, proud of the fact it has been years since he touched and finished to read a book from start to end. Keep on riding, I am not interested in just "going with the wind" dear.

I believe in self education. If you have not finished more than a highschool or even less, but you keep reading, being curious, and have a beautiful home library, I will look at that as you being educated. I have met throughout my life many people who had an inferiority complex about their studies. I was always surprised to see that they did nothing about that than complaining. If you have not continued your studies due to circumstances, it might not have been entirely your fault. If NOW you do not continue to educate yourself and you do not read books, you are the only one responsable. Just take it and blame lack of education on yourself rather than blabbering " it is my family", "society is wrong", " I have no money for books (but I smoke)", "I have no time (but I watch TV 3 hours per day) etc.

When choosing people, for friendship, partnership, love, make yourself a big favor and ask them: when it is the last time when you've read a book? Look at their home library. Is it empty, does it even exist? This is a good indicator of their personality. If you are an intellectual person you can't date or even be together with somebody so ignorant that the only information they take is from Google and from cheap TV shows. This is brain suicide and taking part to that will not be beneficial. In any form of partnership it is good to choose people who play in the same league. Or above. People with an inferiority complex and who feel good in their pool of ignorance should be avoided. Just ask that simple question, look at their home library, and you will save yourself months, maybe years, of trouble.

My weakness activated a couple of days ago. There was a sort of black friday campaign on my favourite book site.. And... Oh my did I click click click. Ordered myself some pretty books to add to my library and to feed my mind. 3 still have to come from another site. This month I have been going a bit crazy with book shopping, but I have no buyer's remorse. Books are gold and feeding your mind should be a priority. Choose people in your life who value this and spend their money on this rather than cheap stuff, leaving their mind hungry and empty. You will notice these people by their behaviour: angry, behaving badly with others, insecure, needy for validation, no boundaries, they say yes to the wrong people and no to the right ones, with an overall sense of uselessness, they have no idea where their life is heading, they have no plans, no strategy. Their mind is left wandering with whatever gets in their way. Feeding with waste information.. They exude a sense of unhappiness and negative vibe. They are not happy with themselves and they will take it on you.

IMG_20200627_065807.jpg

Avoid such people by asking the simple question. Some might jump off like you offended them, some might lie, some might tell the truth. Either way, it will save you time which you could invest in yourself rather than in changing people who do not want to change. You can't send a duck to eagle school, just pick an eagle from the get go, if you know what I mean.

Now let me ask you: what's the latest book you've read? I am always in search for a good book.Let me know in the comment below👇😊

Have a brilliant day and toodle loo!

This actually was the topic of our conversation with my friends yesterday while driving back home from a camp.
You see, I have a crush on this girl and she's all pretty and stuff. But I don't have any information about her intellect as she's just a crush and I haven't had the chance to talk to her. From all appearances she looks very attractive, but I told my friends that I need to know what's inside her first, then I can decide if I want to move forward or anything. :)

I've been reading the 12 Rules for life by Jordan Peterson and I'm almost done with it. It's a great read, I'm sure you'd enjoy reading it. <3

Jordan Peterson book.jpg

Hello! I think that having a crush on someone can be good if you take time to focus on what is inside as well. Often we tend to idealise the new person, imagining they are so awesome and fantastic. It is better to make a list of things in your mind to know what you would like to find out about this person. What does she value in life? Her plans for the future? Her hobbies? What does she do in free time, what kind of people does she surrounds herself with? I think it is important to find and discover slowly things about her character. In the end, it is the common principles and values which you share together the glue that will make you stick together. More than just the physical attraction. I think that we stay with someone for their mind, their personality, the way they make us feel. The brain is the sexiest organ lol.

I have read this book, it is very well written and direct. A good choice!

Can't argue that! :) <3

fabulous I love your explanation what to narrate in your post.

Thank you very much!

Hehehehe Okay And thanks for you for sharing @creativemary 🙂🙂🙂

Welcome!

Thank you very much, @creativemary
I greatly appreciate

You're welcome, good luck in posting and engaging here!

Quiet I like your content @creativemary
greeting from distance

I think what I have realized is that the 'Dunning - Krugger Effect' is real, many people after the reading they did in school, have this illusion that they have it all figured out, there is nothing more to learn, trying to even convince them there is more in the world is just a total waste of time.

Books to me at first were escapes, they helped me go through rough times. They were the source of light amidst all the darkness surrounding me and in a way an indirect guide through it all. They will always be my go-to sources of knowledge.

Currently reading Thinking in Physics - The Pleasure of Reasoning and Understanding by Vennot L.

Hey! I totally understand what you are saying. Many people believe they learned enough in school and are eager to get a job and make money. And then it is done. No more reading, no more studying. And then they wonder why life is hard. Without the habit of self education it will always be hard for those people.

Books always helped and always will. There is great comfort and reward in reading other people and seing that the power of the mind is extraordinary.

I will check the book, thank you for reading!

I read a lot of books. I started at the age of 23, never read anything before.

But in the last 3 years, I have read hundreds of books. And I feel more educated now than I could have studying any degree.

In fact, I am a mechanical engineer, but studying all these books made me more educated than my degree.

This year, some of my favourite books were Atomic habits, Can't hurt me, Talk Like Ted and 48 Laws of power(reading as of now).

I am planning to read Mastery by Robert Greene next. The best thing I have observed after reading all these books is that how they changed my thought process.

In 2017, when I started reading, How to win friends and influence people(my first book), I was astonished by that book.

In 2018, I was addicted to them. And since December 2019, I can see how all this knowledge is shaping my thoughts. I can see why things are messed up in my life clearly.

Started being more productive. Build up more confidence. And the best one is started talking to strangers(I was a big time introvert, would die instead of talking to a stranger).

If I ever achieve anything big in my life, it will be possible only because of the books.

Hello! I can relate to this. I started reading since I was a child, found great refuge in books. And it became a wonderful obsession. I could not let days pass and not read. It became a part of me. I love reading.

Once you start reading and feed your mind with quality stuff, habits change. Mentality changes. I felt it too. I feel it every day. I think the same: books will help me achieve greatness, I am very confident about that.

Robert Greene is very good, I have read him. Carnegie too. You have good taste. I will check the other books, thank you for reading!

This post of yours has made all your future posts more interesting for me.

It's good you share content everyday. More wisdom for me everyday.

Oh that's kind of you to say. I appreciate it! Have a great day!

You too.

this is so true. I was doing a research about some of the richest men in the world and i discovered they were readers. I read somewhere that bill gates reads a book a day. Warren says he spends most of his time reading books. I made a resolve that I was going to try to read a book but I have not been consistent with it. I think its time for me to go back to reading again.
the latest book I read was how to win friends and influence people by Dale Carnegie. The book teaches how to get people to like you and how to get people to do what you want them to do without getting them angry. It has a lot of history as regards the United state and the diplomacy they used to get things done,

its a really good book to read

Hey! Yes, all great leaders are good readers. No man achieved greatness without self education. Ever.

Carnegie is good to read. I support reading and will always do it. Nurture the mind and the mind will give back to you in extraordinary ways

Thank you for reading!

Nurture the mind and the mind will give back to you in extraordinary ways

too much wisdom here... Nice words

Reading is always something which sharpens our mind.
I'm more onto fiction books other than Self-Help. The last one I read was an autobiography of Tara Westover named "Educated".The last fiction was " Crime and Punishment" by Dostoevsky.

Hey! I agree with this, sharpening our mind is a must. Our mind and brain is like a muscle. It needs daily exercise to stay in shape. I see people making efforts to go to the gym like fanatics, I wish I would see the same attitude towards their mind.

I will check the book on Tara Westover. Thank you for reading!

Cool check that it's nice.

CHEESCAKE COOKBOOK that’s the last book I read and it was yesterday

The latest book that I read was a re-read of John Morris' 'The Age of Arthur'. There is still some life kicking around in my former existence as a medievalist.

I'm currently reading Keith Ammann's 'The Monsters Know What They're Doing' which is a wonderful nerdy drill-down into fleshing out behaviour (and especially combat tactics, but oh well) of traditional 'monsters' in RPGs (specifically D&D but hey ho). I'm loving it (or to be more specific, my 11 year old self is loving it) even though I will probably never actually use it for the purpose it was created for. I'm pushing 50 years old now, and my infrequent roleplaying focuses around Pendragon, Runequest / Heroquest, Ars Magica. It would be nice to feel like I had enough time left to indulge in reliving the D&D of my early youth, but I already feel the pressure of having too many things to complete in the time I have left :-)

Lined up as my prospective next read after that is Margaret Heffernan's 'Uncharted: How to Map the Future Together'. I heard her being interviewed on Radio 4's 'The Spark' and I ordered her book the same day.

What I am doing (that is taking up most of my time) is creating. I'm currently sitting here with just shy of a dozen books open at various places, with improvised bookmarks noting various other pages, while I write resources for my students, design graphics to illustrate issues for them visually, and record and edit video material for them to (hopefully) understand. We commence in September, and I would love to be able to break for a short holiday in a couple of weeks knowing that I have broken the back of this project (who am I kidding?!?).

Hey! I will check out the titles! I can relate with ordering books as soon as you hear an interview with someone, that's how I ordered some Harriet Lerner books, the way she talked really made me want to order. The same happened now with Jim. Rohn. After listening to him, I had to get the books.

Creating does take a big part of our time, but it is the best thing you can do for your inner self.

Thank you for reading me!

Rightly said @creativemary.
I'm currently reading "Crush It! Why NOW Is the Time to Cash in on Your Passion" by Gary Vaynerchuk.
He motivates you to make use of social media to build your personal brand and cash in on what you love to do.

Hey! I smile so much now, so many titles of books and so many witty readers, you being one of them. I will check it out.

I believe in pursuing what you love with passion and hard work. And all the wonderful things will come to you!

Thank you for reading!

I believe in pursuing what you love with passion and hard work. And all the wonderful things will come to you!

That's for sure. It's wonderful to see you following your passion. :))
Keep at it. Cheers!

Thank you! Have a great day!

I think lots of people have books as decorative items in their homes and never or rarely read.

So if you're assuming something about someone based on the size of their bookcase you might be mistaken.

And if I have too many books they might not all fit in my brain, better to get a good understanding of few books than overload the hamster running around in all our heads.

My favourite book is Catch 22 by Joseph Heller. Definitely worth checking out.

Hey! That is why I think it is useful to ask the person about them, see if they took notes. I think the conversation will reveal if the library matches the character. For example I take notes on all of my books, it is impossible to find one which does not have my pen marks in it. Wouldn't you agree that if somebody hoards books just to make a good impression, without reading/understanding them, would be easily recognised after some casual conversation? A shallow overconfident actor will always be exposed when asked pertinent questions.

A profound understanding of the book is necessary. That is why it happens to return to a book 3 or more times. A good book is always a new discovery every time you read it. Because in the meanwhile you have changed and you re-read it with new eyes.

I will check it out for sure! Thank you for reading me!

Yeah I understand what you mean that a person's approach to bettering themselves is important and would be fairly transparent after knowing them for a while.

It's interesting to go back to a book you think you know because there's definitely things that you miss the first times you read it.

Oh yes! It happened to me. We mature and sometimes our mind is not ready for the book at the exact time. That is why I value physical books, I can always return to it and read it again and again

“When you see someone reading a book, that is a book recommending you a person”.
Totally true! Thanks for sharing. I think reading is the only possible way to live several times in just one life.

Oooo that is a lovely thing you just said. Yes, our imagination gets activated through reading, every time

Been so guilty of these kind for thoughts in the past:

" I have no money for books (but I smoke)", "I have no time (but I watch TV 3 hours per day) etc."

I used to read a hell of a lot when I was younger and then my career kicked off and I stopped. I took redundancy a few years back and when looking for a new job I realised how behind I was. I was too busy (but I wasn't really).

The good thing about educating yourself is, it is never too late to start...or restart.

I do have weakness for negativity. I don't like hearing bad news especially when it's concerns life and death.

There are people that don't care. For me I get sacred each time.

I don't know if its weird that I have phobia for negativity.

Wow. I noticed that you're in a lot of social media. How do you do it?
What of your data? Doesn't it get exhausted?

I avoid negativity too. It is better for the mind. I try my best to be present, I am an artist and I have to promote my art
