The Great Manliness Flip-Flop

Trump is hands down America’s unmanliest president, despite the weird pseudo-macho culture that his fans have created around him—and despite his moment of defiance after a bullet grazed his ear. I give him all the credit in the world for those few minutes; I have no idea if I’d have that much presence of mind with a few gallons of adrenaline barreling through my veins. But true to form, he then wallowed in the assassination attempt like the narcissist he is, regaling the faithful at the Republican National Convention about how much human ears can bleed. As it turns out, one moment of brave fist-pumping could not overcome a lifetime of unmanly behavior.
And so, Trump’s choice of Vance made sense. Vance, who honorably served four years in the Marines, is now a plutocrat who ran for Senate with artless griping about how childless cat ladies are going to destroy American civilization. It was a pick that probably seemed safe, even funny, when the Biden campaign was fading, especially if Trump thought he had found someone next to whom he could appear mature and tough.
Now consider the men on Kamala Harris’s shortlist, including Governors Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Andy Beshear of Kentucky, and Roy Cooper of North Carolina, and Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona. All of them are men of substance who have achieved political success as Democrats in states with heavy GOP representation. They have made reputations as guys who do their job and don’t whine about it. You may take issue with some of their politics—I do—but these are serious people, unlike the performative clowns who abased themselves for a man whose values they once claimed to reject.

Some headlines almost write themselves: Aging, incoherent felon refuses to drop out of presidential race

Prosecutors Oppose Reversing Trump’s Conviction

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office wrote that the Supreme Court’s decision giving broad meaning to presidential immunity involving formal duties does not have any bearing on the May jury verdict that found Trump guilty on 34 felony counts for illegally trying to conceal the nature of a hush money payment to an adult-film actress shortly before the 2016 election.

GOP Lawmakers Can’t Help Making Racist Remarks About Harris

Trump Allies Pour $32 Million More Into Attacking Harris

A top pro-Trump super PAC is expanding its ad spending against Vice President Kamala Harris and launching new ads attacking her record as a prosecutor in California and on immigration.
The PAC, Make America Great Again Inc., is adding an additional $32 million of ad buys from now until Labor Day, totaling $70 million. The group is focusing its spending — totaling roughly $12 million a week — in the battleground states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Nevada and Arizona.

Any non-crazy Republican should win Arizona and Georgia without breaking a sweat. It says a lot about Trump’s weakness as a candidate that they feel forced to spend millions there.

J.D. Vance Endorsed Book Calling Liberals ‘Unhumans’

During his acceptance speech at the Republican convention last week, Sen. J.D. Vance, the GOP vice presidential candidate, praised Donald Trump’s call for ‘unity.’ But this year, Vance endorsed a new book co-written by a far-right conspiracy-monger that calls progressives ‘unhumans’ and claims they are waging an “Irregular Communist Revolution” against American civilization.
The book, Unhumans: The Secret History of Communist Revolutions (and How to Crush Them), was written by Jack Posobiec and Joshua Lisec. Posobiec is a well-known alt-right agitator and conservative media personality who promoted the bonkers Pizzagate conspiracy theory.

Economists See Revived Inflation If Trump Wins

The Federal Reserve’s battle to get inflation under control likely faces fresh challenges should Donald Trump regain the White House, a dynamic that could put the U.S. central bank back in the former Republican president’s crosshairs.
A wide range of economists see Trump’s tariff agenda, coupled with aims to deport millions of undocumented workers and the likelihood of expanded deficits, reigniting price pressures that are now easing and likely driving the Fed to react with more restrictive monetary policy than is now penciled in.

Harris says she’s ready to debate Trump and accuses him of ‘backpedaling’ from Sept. 10 faceoff

Trump Botches ‘Kamala’ Again and Again

Again and again at Trump’s campaign rally, the former president invoked her by first name. His 90-minute speech included about four dozen references — and in many of those, he botched the pronunciation. It wasn’t a first for Trump — he similarly botched it in 2020, even cracking jokes in the process.
