My 6-year old son is in a campaign flyer.
For student body of course. Last Monday, my first grader Raphael excitedly announced that his name is on a flyer. And it was indeed. He was lined-up in the running for the glamorous position of...
ESCORT!!!
His school directress decided to line him up in one of the parties running for student body this year. I would have appreciated a heads-up, but seeing his excitement, Aunt Amelia and I decided to go with it.
Everyday after school I always ask Raphael how his day went. Monday was no different, this time though he started his tale by taking out goodies from his bag. He had lots of candies in small plastic bags! And with each bag there is a campaign flyer for other students also on the race.
I realized that candies are vital in this campaign.
Some part of me wanted to scream- This isn't right! Isn't this the kid's version of bribery?
But then I realized, they are just kids. This must be one way to get them excited and engaged on the event! And seeing Raphael's enthusiasm, full-support-mommy was unleashed.
The usual printout flyers usually gets thrown away after the goodie bag was opened, a waste of paper. I decided to create small bookmarks instead that kids hopefully use even after the campaign is over.
I thrown in magazine cutouts of popular kids shows to add some fun!
And of course, candies must simply be there!
The election is on Friday, and we're all set for tomorrow's campaign!
We have practiced his lengthy speech too.
"Hi, my name is Raphael. Please vote for me for escort."
To gauge his take on this, I asked a few questions.
Miel: What will you do if schoolmates vote for you and you win?
Raphael: I don't even know.
Miel: What does it mean when they vote for you?
Raphael: It means they like me?
Miel: What is the job of an escort?
Raphael: In flying the airplanes of course.
I think he may have misheard 'airport' for 'escort', but I did not push further.
Obviously at his age, he still does not understand position, politics and what it entails. Still, I embrace these activities as a means of wholistic growth for children. Will he win or not? It doesn't matter. I will be his rock whatever the outcome is, and in the end, what matters is the fun and experience derived from this.
Steeming happily ever after,
WOW, you're a busy mommy!
I do not miss those days! LOL I guess at that age it's about the goodie bag more than merit. I was always an outcast and too shy to ever be nominated for grade school "politics". I don't think my mom would have made goodie bags either. ha!
Busy as a bee I was, but I had fun doing this too!
Shy as a kid? I would never have guessed you were.
We grew up differently then. I joined practically everything! Kid's pageants, Math English and Science quiz bee, editorial writing, declamation contests. You name it. Haha. And I had fun making friends along the way. I guess that's also why I get excited for Raphael now ^_^
Oh yeah, terribly shy and awkward. Teased nearly every day. I was chubby, wore glasses, Asperger's (didn't know this until I was assessed as an adult), and an Army brat to boot! So I was never in one place long enough to make friends, and mom was learning English so she wasn't a lot of help in the homework department as she was studying too. LOL
Chubby and glasses are cute in my opinion. I have perfect eyesight but have a pair of, ahm, fashion glasses lol.
Asperger's I learned of about 6 or 7 years back, when one of the contestants in America's Next Top Model was said to be diagnosed with one also. I can only imagine how it could have been for you, specially so since diagnosis was done later on. Growing up, did you have lots of why's that made sense after you knew you have it?
Army brat- this must have been both challenging and exciting! As you mentioned, not staying long enough to make lasting relationships- this would have been tough for me. At the same time you get to be in many different places! Having new experiences, seeing different cultures, this could be a blast.
I'm sure your mom must have tried her outmost best to support you with school while she herself was learning too. On the plus side, this experience would have made you more self-reliant and resourceful? Both traits necessary for success I think ^_^
say hi to him for me dear.
Thanks @cutegirl! I will as soon as he wakes up ^_^

Wow! Good luck! Hopefully, he gets the position. Being engaged in activities like those at a very early age could help build confidence and strengthen leadership skills. (Lol for the candy bribery thing. I guess it goes both ways. Bribery and reward for participating)
Haha yeah, I view candies as rewards instead! Thank you for your well-wishes. I do hope he gets it too, although I can see myself being even busier if he does!
But I know it will be worth it, just thinking about all the fun things he could do gets me excited!
Busier = More bonding time :D
Chrue! And more FUNNNNNN!!!!
Go Rafa! Be the airport!
Hahaha Tita @beng05 he says he wants to be the pilot instead
Good luck Rafa!!!
Thanks tita @luvabi! Although he will be away from school for two weeks. He is still hyperactive though you wouldn't guess that he's sick! Lol
Mika din has the fever today :(
Hi friend I hope your son will get the position.I remember when I was in Elementary I also run for a position of treasurer. We use art materials as flyers for the campaign no one is giving candy at that time.If I maybe include candy I will surely win the position lol.
very creative campaign strategy, a bit nostalgic thinking about my elementary and highschool days, i had bookmark collections then <3

Ha! Fun. I definitely don't base my votes on candy, but I try to empathize with those who do. We all gotta make a living.
