I've already talked about how Facebook nags businesses to communicate with their own followers. Today I noticed this from Twitter:
From a privacy perspective, this raises some pretty obvious red flags. At the same time, it's possible we need to re-evaluate our stance on privacy if we want to increase human wellbeing.
Facebook, Twitter, and other sites which have "Like!" and "Tweet!" buttons on them are collecting and sharing your browsing habits with advertisers around the world. New browsers like the Brave browser may help by blocking cookies and advertisements by default. New cryptocurrency solutions like BAT (Basic Attention Token) may also help by creating new incentive models for content creators to receive value via micro transactions empowered by cryptocurrency. Sites like Steemit may upend the whole system by eliminating the need for advertiser revenue all together by rewarding content creators and curators directly with newly created cryptocurrency while at the same time creating a valued promoted section for businesses who are willing to pay for attention.
The world is changing and the way social media companies seek profit will come under even greater scrutiny over time.
In my opinion, Steemit is the future.
Decentralize all the things.

There will be even less privacy on Steemit (posts are here forever) . Twitter and FB only need to connect you with their database and you are done.
That's certainly one way to look at it, but with the last hard fork, posts can be edited after payout (even though the steemit interface doesn't currently support it). I've been told it will eventually (and there are always the piston tools which can be used).
When it comes to the privacy I'm talking about, it has much more to do with sites you visit outside of Facebook and Twitter. Any page with a button on it is setting cookies and tracking your browsing activity. That's far more intrusive to privacy than the content you yourself willingly contribute to a social media platform.
Well said. I am also always wary of privacy. When I check my spam email or other sites and I see products directly related to me, I am rather spooked. We are effectively being monetized by conglomerates that lie beyond our control. Steem can dissolve this dystopian paradigm.
As they refine their algorithms and use them more effectively, things are going to get even weirder.
"Decentralize All Things"
NAILED IT!
Steemit is our disruptor!
Cheers to you Luke for showing how the mainstream social websites and apps are greedily claiming our personal information.
Gross 😕
Blockchain technology is our future! 😀
Great article. We also feel block chain is the future. Its gonna be a great wave to surf the next bit. Nice one~
For best results: Resteem, Upvote, Follow and Comment!
I just got in today and all I am going to say is that STEEMIT is by FAR the most interesting thing that ever got my attention on the whole INTERNET!
IN BLOCKCHAIN WE TRUST!
Hi Luke, I really enjoyed your Youtube video 'Explaining Steemit to My Friends: Blockchains and Cryptocurrencies'. I'm new to the world of cryptocurrencies so still trying to get my head around the concepts, your video made a lot of sense and helped me to better understand it. Thanks again :)
Thanks for saying so! I hope to do more videos in the future explaining the basics.
Awesome. I saw your company website too. My website is run off Squarespace as I sell my art works and prints on there. I was now thinking to have an option to accept bitcoin but I don't think Squarespace supports it, although I've been told they have had lots of requests. Do you know if this can be done, is there a plugin I could use. I was even thinking for now just to paste an image onto my homepage that says 'Bitcoin Accepted Here' and just have a note to say contact me privately if you wish to pay in Bitcoin. As I say I'm totally new to the world of cryptocurrencies and I don't know anyone let alone artists that know anything about bitcoin!
My website is at: samuelearp.com
Thanks :)
We have a number of our users who build their sties on Squarespace but use us for their ecommerce. If you want to find out more, go ahead and create an account and our team will give you more information. I'm on vacation this week, so I probably won't be the one responding. :) We currently integrate with both BitPay and Coinbase. Maybe you could use their button creation tools?
Hey Luke, thanks so much for this. I have stripe set up already and also about to implement PayPal which is offered by Squarespace. It was mainly for the option to purchase products from my website using bitcoin as well, however I haven't yet decided when I will do this...I'm still researching the world of cryptocurrencies. Thanks again for your help, it's greatly appreciated :)
One pf the elements of Steemit I like this most is knowing the role it will play in BURYING that fascist, CIA founded surveillance corporation.
Yes, but also keep in mind the entire blockchain is completely open to them. Every single post you've liked, every comment you've made, every new blog entry you've published... they can (and probably are) using all that information to profile you (and me) quite accurately. If we become a threat, they'll know it before we do.
Good point- they already know me well. : )
Ditto!
Just shut that whole page of options off today after receiving that message myself. Twitter is the worst. Banning people all the time, and trying to siphon tons of personal information.
IMHO, it's still a long way to arouse people to use steemit as the new replacement, but quite promising!
I agree. We have a long way to go. But as Facebook and Twitter keep doing things like this and people start seeing it impact their daily lives (such as seeing ads for things they'd rather not have people know they are interested in), the shift will happen. It will take some time, for sure, but things do change quite quickly nowadays. It didn't take long for Myspace and Blockbuster to become irrelevant.
It might happen faster than most of us have expected. I am now reading Freedom by Daniel Suarez. December USD/Darknet credit was 3.9, March USD/Darknet Credit was 28.7, then July it was 202.4. Interesting expoentantial functions!
I love Suarez's books! I've read all of them, some multiple times.
Daniel Suarez is agenius! Thanks to your recommendation!
Facebook and YouTube are getting a little creepy. Glad I found out about Steemit.
You are right on point @lukestokes. The only thing constant is change and I'm glad i discovered steemit at the early stage. Power to the people, great post once again. i look forward to reading your work.
Soon everybody will realize that this current social media sites are just using them for business gain. We need to share steemit to the world and show them what freedom truly is.
Replacement Done!
I think you would enjoy this short piece I wrote

Don't work too hard on vacation! ;)
Excellent post! Well done.
Not working at all so far. It's been pretty fantastic. :)
That's awesome! It is important to relax. Enjoy the rest of your vacation ! :)
Agreed. Steemit is the future
Thanks for this! My sentiments exactly & why I quit both FB & Twitter. What do you now about blockchain land ownership to protect one's land against confiscation?
I think any decentralized solution which doesn't rely on the government monopoly on violence is a great idea!
I heard it already exists....just not sure where or how. I'll see if I can stumble on it further & will share. It should apply to 'marriage' / unions as well in my opinion. Get the mafia Gvt out of everything !
Facebook has become so saturated with adverts and people paying for attention. It is no longer a viable option to build a community on, its just too overwhelmed with clutter.
Steemit is here to stay!
Good reads here, steemit will beat other social media sites!!
Yesssss I'm so sick of all of the ads on Facebook... its making me get off of there and onto here!
That's true man and really said so if people has more they do not share with others. I do not talk about shearing with me but just with those who really poor and starving. Have good live, work lot but we share with others even we do not have lot.
