The Real Scandal Behind the Signal Leak

in #ramblerant8 days ago (edited)

A few days ago, news of a comically bad security failure in the Trump administration hit the headlines. Senior Trump administration officials were holding a meeting in the Signal chat app to plan military operations in Yemen, and somehow, a reporter for the Atlantic was included in the chat.

The scandals we're told to focus on from the Left

  • The Trump administration is incompetent. And?
  • Vance doesn't speak highly of Europe. Who cares, though?
  • Why is the government was using Signal to plan stuff? Fair question.

The talking points from the Right

  • Jeffrey Goldberg is a hack and the Atlantic is a tabloid masquerading as a serious magazine. Fair enough, but that doesn't disprove these claims in the slightest.
  • Our troops are brave and heroic and deserve our support. What does that have to do with anything relevant to this, though?
  • Trump was doing the job Biden failed to do for 4 years! Except Biden bombed Yemen a lot. In fact, various regional powers and the US has been waging a proxy war there for a decade, with the populace subjected to blockades and bombings. And Trump campaigned on ending US involvement!

The real scandal

The US government is incapable of peace. Innocent lives will continue to be sacrificed to serve the ambitions of the politically-connected, and no one in that chat, not even Vance or Gabbard, seems to have brought that up. Oh, and there is no courage in bombing the poorest country on the Arabian peninsula.

All pretense of Constitutional authority and formal declaration of war went out the window 20+ years ago. Now they overthrow foreign leaders, bomb weddings, and blockade enemies on a whim. The American public as a whole may not even know it is happening unless something as outlandish as this leak occurs.

Our money may say, "IN GOD WE TRUST," but the government is dedicated to Mars, the god of war. Politicians may say they represent you, but you can't be allowed to know everything they do in your name.

And worst of all, how much of this has been happening under how many administrations without getting revealed until now?

That's one of the things about the Trump admin, love it or hate it - there is no more hiding behind "Special operations in the name of democracy". Likewise I found all of the "Trump never started a war" talk during the last election cycle to be comical. Yemen has been getting bombed to pieces for the past decade nearly, not to mention the number of similar targeted bombings that have happened under every administration in my entire lifetime. The "I hate bailing out the Europeans" line is comical as well as the Houthis have made it clear that all of their attacks are a response to the operations in Gaza...

Technically Trump never started new wars, but he sure failed to end any, and he assassinated an Iranian leader in what could have kicked off a war right at the end of his first term. He's no paragon of non-interventionism.

The sad part is, once upon a time, the Democrats at least talked about peace. That went out the window altogether under Obama, though. I have little doubt Harris would have been more belligerent. We are never given a real peace candidate.

Yes - long gone are the days of a true "peace candidate". Bernie likely would have been that, but comes with his own baggage.

Bernie sometimes talks peace and sometimes votes peace but often seems more like the token peace guy than a real counterculture idealist these days. It's more image than substance.

Military plans on Signal is like using a Notes app password for a bank vault. But the real joke is how nobody’s pissed about Yemen getting wrecked for years

Exactly. Was wild to me that in 2022 the Russians were kicked out of FIFA and couldn't participate in the world cup, but noone said anything about the Saudis. Feels like the entire world has a blind spot for Yemen.

a big ass blind spot

I've been following antiwar.com for a while, and it seems like they're the only ones pointing out this kind of travesty most of the time.

Am I on their site now, pretty cool

It still looks like a site from 2002, but they cover a lot of info.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 and that's why I had to send you the screenshot just to be sure because been a while since I saw a website user interface like that. Hahaha

Remember the early days of news aggregator sites like the Drudge Report?

hahaha yes yes I do 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 nice

Be VERY wary of that site. It's been infiltrated by paid actors for a pro-war psyop, so if you're going to share anything you found there, you need to make sure it's actually true. A big part of the reason the War Machine is so powerful is that it has a consistent track record of discrediting the anti-war movement by feeding us narratives so ridiculous that no-one in a position to actually do anything will take us seriously. The general public can't see it, but former "defense" contractor insiders like yours truly know exactly what's happening here.
Furthermore, a lot of people who profess (and they may even believe themselves) to be anti-war are only anti-intervention, but are in favour of a psychological and economic war at home, and depending on the individual in question, may not even be anti-violence.

America first!!!! second?

Distant second.
