Steemit Sandwich Contest Week # 5 - Beet Theme Sandwich (2nd entry): The ‘Bloody Good’ Sandwich

in #steemitsandwichcontest7 years ago (edited)

This is my 2nd beet theme sandwich of this week. Earlier this week, I set a goal for myself to use beet in all my sandwiches as I wanted to challenge myself and also to learn more about food pairing.

First, I spent some time to ‘study’ beet very closely. My study included tasting beet in various forms, i.e. raw, roasted, steamed and pan-fried. In my opinion, I like it most when it’s roasted because of the intensified sweetness. Of course, it is just a personal preference.

I then roasted a whole bunch of beet and set aside in the fridge for my upcoming creations. In my previous post, I turned some roasted beets into pesto based on a recipe I read awhile ago online.

For my second sandwich, I was thinking how restaurant menus often pair both beet and goat cheese together. Since I have never ordered, or tasted the two together, I believed it’s about time I give it a try and to make my second beet theme sandwich with goat cheese. Of course, I like a healthy sandwich and so I included some healthy spinach too. Further, I wanted the cheese to melt and so I made a decision to create a grilled cheese style sandwich.

The steps to put this sandwich together are quite straight-forward. I layered the ingredients on top of bread with butter. I then grilled it in a buttered frying pan.

The final outcome was beyond my expectation - I have now confirmed that goat cheese goes extremely well with roasted beet. In addition, if you like colours, you would notice the very beautiful colour combo created when melting the purple beet with white goat cheese. At first glance, it looks like the sandwich was bleeding (of course not). To me, it’s like a piece of art installation, playing on flavours and colours, hence I named it the 'Bloody Good' sandwich.

This beet theme sandwich project has been 'bloody fun' so far and I am really into it. Hope you enjoyed my thought process and perhaps inspired to create a sandwich or two to share with us via this contest!
