THE GIANT GOULAFFRE

goulaffre_9.jpg
The golden carriage.

But, after a few months, the king's cheerfulness faded again, little by little.

"What will he ask me now?", Allanic said to himself, worried.

Finally, the king said to him one day:

"I will only live happily when you have brought me here, to my palace, the giant Goulaffre himself."

"Ah! Sire, can you demand the impossible, and after all I have done for you, will you not give me a moment of peace?"

"I tell you, you must bring me the giant Goulaffre, or there is only death for you."

"Yes, I see now that it is indeed my death that you desire; but at least, will you give me everything I ask of you, to attempt this impossible test?"

—"Ask whatever you want, I will refuse you nothing."

"Well! Have me build a carriage of solid gold, all furnished with sharp points inside, and whose single door will close by itself on whoever enters the carriage, without him being able to open it, regardless of its strength. I will also need twenty-four strong horses to harness them."

“You will have all that,” replied the king.

Blacksmiths and skilled workers were found, and in a short time, the carriage was built to the desired conditions of solidity and dimensions. Twenty-four magnificent horses were harnessed there. Allanic climbed into the seat, dressed as a coachman, and left.

When he arrived in the woods surrounding the castle, he saw the giant walking there.

He cried and moaned and sometimes let out wild screams. Allanic walked towards him, and asked him very respectfully:

"What, lord, is the cause of such great pain?"

"Ah! I am the most unfortunate of giants! An abortion, named Allanic, made me kill my two daughters and my wife; and what's more, he stole my seven-league boots, my half-moon, and my golden cage. Ah! if I had it! but I don't know where to find him, nor what country he lives in."

"Allanic! But I know him very well, and I also have reason to complain about him. I would be delighted to be able to take revenge for all the harm he has done to me. Enter my carriage, lord, and I will find it for you without delay.

Goulaffre, who did not recognize Allanic disguised as a coachman from a large house, entered the carriage without hesitation. Immediately the door closed on him of its own accord, with a loud noise, and the coachman whipped his horses, which set off at full gallop. The poor giant, jolted in his prison, torn by the spikes that entered his body from all sides, uttered frightening cries and made every effort to open the door and break the carriage. But it was in vain. He terrified everything in his path, men and animals, with his cries of rage.

They arrived in Paris. But once the giant was brought into the palace courtyard, they didn't know what to do with him. Everyone trembled as they heard him scream and roar in his prison. The council was assembled to deliberate on what should be done. No one knew how to give a reasonable opinion. Fear dominated everything. Then Allanic said:

"I will drive the carriage into the middle of a large plain; have fifty cartloads of oak wood and as many cartloads of fagots transported around him; then, it will be set on fire, and Goulaffre will be burned alive and reduced to ashes, in the middle of this hellish fire, without being able to harm anyone.

They followed this advice and thus freed themselves from the terrible giant Goulaffre.

Allanic then married the king's daughter, and, as he had a good heart, he appointed Fistilou his first army general, although he had tried to do him a lot of harm.

There were, for a whole month, public rejoicings and continual feasts. I, who was young then, was taken to the palace kitchen to turn the spit, and this is how I was able to learn the story of Allanic and the giant Goulaffre and tell you all the things as they happened.

Told by Barbe Tassel, from Plouaret, in 1869.

Next Tale: The Man with Two Dogs

Hello, my name is Vincent Celier.

I am writing translations of folk tales that I found in public domain French books, so that people who do not understand French may enjoy them too.

So the king wanted to get rid of the Giant Goulaffre. He could have said that to Allanic in the beginning, then Allanic would have also gotten his half-moon and his golden cage.

Anyhow, Allanic succeeds in capturing the Giant Goulaffre and killing him.

This tale ends on a positive note: Allanic marries the king's daughter and pardons Fistilou.

Today, I walked to our favorite grocery store to buy jam.

On my way, I went through the parking lot of the nearby shopping center. After the big snowstorm of last week, there are big piles of snow on this parking lot.

Here is another view; in the back, you can see the restaurant where we had lunch yesterday, my daughter Roseline and I: the Cactus Club Café.

It will take several weeks for these snow piles to melt.

What an exciting ending to this story!
Allanic manages to capture and finally get rid of the giant Goulaffre, proving his bravery and cunning.
What's more, he ends up marrying the king's daughter, which is a happy ending for him.
Although Fistilou made mistakes, Allanic shows his nobility by forgiving him. It seems that everyone got what they deserved in the end, and peace has returned to the kingdom.
Undoubtedly, a story full of emotion and unexpected twists and turns.
An excellent story.

I'm sure the snowy landscape made your hike even more magical.
I hope you found the jam you were looking for.
Enjoy your shopping and the rest of the day!

What a great end to the story, i am really impressed by the intelligence of the Allanic, the way he catches the giant was impressive and i know only a man of his calliber could do it. Also he when went to catch the giant, he asked the king all his requirments which will help him to catch the giant.

Now he has married to the king daughter, and also he forgive his friend who wanted to harm you, he did good. forgiving is a blessing. hopefully the king will live with happiness now.

I love snow, but i also know, it can cause problems for the people who are living in the their area which suffer from the snow fall. I wish everyone safe in this cold weather.

After reading today's story, I would like to say that we were watching a long-time boss who was oppressing this poor boy and told him many things that he couldn't do. But he did all those things for Asha without caring for his life and now we see that he has very cleverly made a plan against the king and he succeeds and the king is also here. If punishment is being meted out, then the story has a good ending because we know that those who do wrong to another human being will also do wrong to them in the next life and the way it happened to the king.

When the weather is cold like this, it's a bit of a problem to go shopping, but it's also necessary to buy them.

Here the story ends. It's interesting and amazing. Although giant is not doing good to people but why still I'm having some sadness about his life end but I think it's necessary too. Meanwhile Allanic have the happy ending and it's great plan of him that's a perfect end he deserves it.

Wow now the weather is clear almost I think. Enjoy your day and have a good health. I'm still fad up from our foggy weather from last 2 weeks

The construction of the golden carriage, with its unique characteristics, adds a touch of fantasy to the story. The description of the giant's suffering and his tragic story arouse sympathy, although the character's final fate is shocking. Allanic shows ingenuity and courage by proposing a unique solution to get rid of the dangerous Goulaffre. The story concludes with a happy twist, highlighting Allanic's benevolence in forgiving Fistilou and celebrating the victory with his royal marriage.

Lots of snow and not a ray of sun to be seen. Well, there is less time left until the arrival of spring and the end of the winter rest. Although having a coffee next to the fireplace isn't bad either.

Very happy at the way it ended, Allanic deserved a hero's song, for falling the great Goulaffre, and he did receive it in marrying the king's daughter.
I'm also happy for his good nature at forgiving Fistilou the traitor and even giving him that key position.
He should beware of friends like him though.
That pile of snow over there has a beauty all by itself and the Cafe also. I hope the birthday hangout with Roseline went well.

I really enjoyed this story and the way it ended. Allanic was indeed so wise with the request he made to the king, which helped him in capturing Goulaffre. Even the trick he used to capture Goulaffre was so perfect.
Allanic wisdom actually led him to greatness and Goulaffre's greediness led to his downfall.

The pile of snow is actually still plenty, I wonder when it will melt finish

So this is what the king wanted all along, he was just a king for nothing, a coward that would need someone else to fight his own battles for him.
Allanic is witty and I had no doubts he would deliver.
Goulaffre must have cursed the day he met Allanic and if he had known that he would be his undoing, he wouldn't have spared him at all.
I'm happy the story ended on a very happy note for Allanic.
The snow piles are still beautiful.

I’m very happy that the story ended happily but what if something bad had happened to Allanic? What if the giant was able to catch and kill him? The King is very wicked and stingy because he was only after his selfish interest which is not nice

Allanic seem to be a very smart person for him to be able to bring up the idea of locking the giant in the cage to get him captured and also burning him alive. Even though Fistilou tried to harm Allanic, he still made him his general commander
He’s such a nice and sweet soul
I love the story!

Allanic must have actually been nervous and wondering what might it be to see it become from the king that he was wondering what will he ask. Well the truth of the matter is if I am in his shoe, I will be more nervous than how he is because the truth of the matter is, it is not always easy most especially when you know that this is the king of Paris. "Ah! Sire, can you demand the impossible, and after all I have done for you, will you not give me a moment of peace?" And at that particular time, I begin to discover that he was not only nervous but he was also tired of everything and how everything is going on. This is at this time that he was so tired of everything that all he just wanted and desire is his freedom and he will have been wondering if it is like this at first, he will not have gone at that direction. ""I tell you, you must bring me the giant Goulaffre, or there is only death for you." That is really a powerful request that looks quite impossible to achieve.

That story had a really nice ending for Allanic. The King redeemed himself for me after he let Allanic marry his daughter. Fistilou, also getting rewarded was a nice gesture from Allanic, and I hope they became friends again.

The snow already melted entirely here but we've had wet snowfall for the past 2 days.

what is the temperature around this area where these snow piles are ?

Glossary shopping is compulsory in every week and the of your is very cold and beautiful

Good work from allanic for capturing goulaffre and killing him..
That shows how brave he his..

I learn to be smart and problem-solve in difficult situations.
Rather than despairing when things get tough, let's be optimistic and positive and solve problems with wisdom.

It was or it should have been expected though that after many months, the king cheerfulness will not last long and will actually fade away soon. That has been predictable long term ago. I guess the king was been unfair with that request because truth be told, how do he expect him to achieve or fulfil that mighty demands set. That was outrageous and close to been impossible actually. Well the king was just so desperate for the giant to be killed due to the continuous disturbance form the giant. Someone I just pity is the innocent Soul of allanic who did not know quite anything about this and is suffering innocently. That is terrible actually. The king eventually set allanic up by giving him an offer he wouldn't resist if he can only do that. I think that was the only motivation for the giant to be brought before the king actually

Again the ingenuity of Allanic comes to the rescue. Through his resourcefulness the wicked and soulless giant is tricked and then killed, thus ensuring the safety of everyone including the King. As a reward, the King gives away his daughter in marriage to Allanic. But Allanic is not just smart, he has a kind heart too, and this is shown when he forgives his friend Fistilou who had wronged him in the past and appoints him to a very prominent position. Fewer stories have ended on a more happy note.

Thanks for translating.

I do hope the snow melts in time to allow free movement again. I hope you are doing your best coping with the harsh weather. Over here we are battling with intense heat and it's just unbearable. But I believe with time that will pass.

Goodbye and God bless, @vcelier.

I knew Allanic was going to be honoured greatly at the end, his bravery has ended the blood line of the giant goulaffre, a big win for the city.
I am also glad he honored his friend with an amazing position.
