THE MAN WITH TWO DOGS

man_with_2_dogs_1.jpg
The old king and his son.

There once was a king of France who had only one child, a daughter. He was very saddened not to have a son to succeed him, and he said to himself with pain:

"My race will therefore die out with me!"

And this thought tormented him greatly. Although already old, he and the queen prayed to God every day to grant them a son. Their prayers were finally answered, and a son was born to them, a very beautiful child.

The old king died soon after, having married his daughter to a powerful king; and the queen also was not long in following him. The young prince, named Jean, was to ascend the throne at the age of twenty-one; but, while awaiting his majority, his sister and her husband were invested with sovereign authority. The birth of the prince had thwarted his sister's ambitious plans; so she showed him little affection. She relegated him to a farmer's house, some distance from the palace, and she rarely went to see him. Meanwhile, the young prince grew up; the farmer loved him as his son, and he was at home as well as at court, and perhaps better. One day his sister came to see him, and noticing how well he looked and promised to be strong and vigorous, she was frightened and told the farmer that if he wanted to kill him, she would give him the farm, a magnificent farm. The farmer promised, but he never had the courage to carry out his promise. Yet he swore he had done it.

The young prince, disguised from that day on as a little shepherd, went with the young shepherds of the farm to look after the sheep on the moor, and he took great pleasure there, singing and playing with them, and looking for nests in the spring. There was a black sheep in the flock that he loved above all others. One day she had two little lambs, one black and the other completely white. Jean's joy was very great. At sunset, when the flock returned to the farm, he took the little white lamb in his arms and brought it to the fold. From that moment on, he was his most faithful companion and best friend. The lamb followed him everywhere, like a little dog.

At the age of eighteen, however, Jean grew tired of this life and wanted to travel to seek adventures. The farmer loved him very much; however, as he feared that his sister, seeing him one day, would recognize him, he let him go. So here he is on the roads, going at random, where God will lead him, and accompanied only by his white lamb. One day, while crossing a large forest, he encountered a hunter, followed by two dogs.

Previous Tale: The Giant Goulaffre

Hello, my name is Vincent Celier.

I am writing translations of folk tales that I found in public domain French books, so that people who do not understand French may enjoy them too.

In this new tale, the main character is apparently the son of a king, that must hide because his life is in danger.

There is still no hint who the man with two dogs is, as Jean, the son of the king, has only a lamb as a pet.

Lake Lafarge

This evening I went to a local lake: Lafarge Lake. It was originally a quarry exploited by the Lafarge company. When they had extracted all that they wanted, they gave the land to the city of Coquitlam, which filled the quarry with water and created a park around this artificial lake.

Every year, the city puts illuminations around the lake in December and January. It takes three weeks to put all the lights in November and three weeks to remove them in February.

Here are some of the pictures I took while I walked around the lake.

This story sounds very interesting!
The Man with the Two Dogs sounds like a story full of mystery and adventure.
The main character, who happens to be the son of a king, is forced to go into hiding to protect his life.
I'm excited to find out what happens next in this fascinating story of Lower Britain.
I can't wait to read the next part!

What an interesting story about Lake Lafarge!
It must be amazing to see all those lights in December and January. The photos you took are beautiful, I'd love to see them in person someday!
Thanks for sharing.

I am shocked to see the behaviour of a sister with his brother? how she can be this cruel? I just can't believe this. His brother is the future king, and he should be treated like that, but sadly his parents got died and now his sister want to kill him.

Thank you that farmers who hasn't killed the son of the king. Now he is on adventure with his lamp and he met unknown hunter who has two dogs.

What a beautiful lake you have visited, i love the lights and decoration.

It is a fact that when a person is old, he does not know what is next for him, when his life ends, so it is better that such decisions should be made in advance. By the way now his daughter was married and he was a strong king who was married but his daughter who was not that intimate with her brother and wanted to kill him just for that few money and For the sake of this government, it shows that greed can compel a man to kill even his blood relations as this girl was doing and she gave the job to a farmer's son. Kill my brother, but the farmer's son was wise and didn't do it at all, so it's good that we will see many more adventures in this story.

If such lightings are done, all these sights will look more beautiful at night.

This tale is interesting too and I'm excited for the next part. I'm just thinking that animals are the good friends than the humans . As she is his sister and his blood but she is not sincere with him that's too disappointing that how a blood can become cold?? Just the matter of authority and crown people can destroy ones life. I like his little lamb it's innocent and cute pet.

Wow that's all amazing click's. Lightning and night a perfect combo lovely

Prince Jean reveals the struggle against family ambitions, overcoming adversity and the search for identity. The king's longing for an heir, the tragedy of his death and the misfortune of Jean, relegated by his own sister. The prince with the white lamb highlights purity and loyalty in the midst of adversity. Curiosity about Jean's future as he sets out on his journey in search of adventure.

What beautiful images. They took very good advantage of the space left by the quarry to integrate it into the city. Now it is surely a nice recreational area for citizens.

Wickedness really abounds on this earth. How can the princess treat her own flesh and blood like this? After all she was a queen married to a very powerful king, had her own kingdom.
I just feel so sorry for Jean, a Prince who had to live like a vagabond but I pray that good fortune would one day smile on him.

That Lake and the lightnings are so beautiful and at nights, it would just be so amazing.

Why do I have a feeling that this tale is going to be tough just like the previous story.
The fight for Leadership can lead people into putting their hands in bad things. Imagine what is happening in this story, the King's daughter wants to kill her only brother just because of the throne. And now the farm has to be hiding the Prince away from his sister.
Now that the Prince has decided to travel far away, let's see what happens next.

The lake looks so beautiful with all the lightening around it.

Jean is unlucky that even his own blood sister hates him to the point of plotting to end his life. That's what power can do. People can do anything to have or to retain power. I think Jean had the good sense to move away from the farm to go roam the world to seek his fortune. At least his life will be preserved. And who knows, he may be able to make some good fortune for himself and come back to retake his throne that his evil and ambitious sister snatched from him.

Thanks for sharing.

The lake looks beautiful especially with the lights used to decorate it. It's a nice place for sightseeing and relaxation, and I'm sure you enjoyed the experience of visiting it.

Goodbye and God bless, @vcelier.

Such places really looking nice and their lights when shine in night looks stunning.
I think these places are very important as they enhance the beauty of a country and attractive point for tourists who wants to see beauty of that country.
Peoples amaze to see such places.
If we talk about the story, the main character is the king son Jean and his life is in danger due to his own sister.
I think his sister should not behave like this .
Afterall he is her brother and she has to show effection to him.
At the end peoples should also take awareness that their actual king is Jean, not the husband of princess.
They are cruel and Same thing still we can see in our democratic countries, for rule, they can do everything and I can't understand that why peoples wants to take rule as their responsibilities also have to be increases. How they can fulfill their duties.

From been the haier to the throne the king son was reduced to been a farmer, not only been a farmer, his life was at stack, what a wicked world we live in, this story reminds me what my mum always say to me, " my enemies are mostly the once from my own family, be care daughter". I know God's plans for him is going to amazing.

The view of the river with the glow of the lighting is truly a sight to behold.

No wonder the King was sad when he didn't have a son to succeed him because he knew his daughter was not worthy enough to sit upon his throne. Otherwise how does one explain this kind of treatment the princess has meted out to her very own, to the extent that she wanted him dead. Tall ambitions to take the throne that rightfully belonged to her brother, Jean, would not be right so it can't work.
I wonder who the man with the two dogs is too? Is he for good, or for bad?
God bless the farmer for taking good care of Jean and for not being carried away by the promises of the princess.
The Lake is such a wonderful view.

This seems to have a more typical start to a story. A boy who is royalty, but was hidden, or didn't know he was one. Having a lamb as a pet is something I haven't encountered much in a story though. It will be interesting to see how their adventures turn out.

There is nothing that is impossible and that is why I sometimes believe it when I see people who give birth at their old age. I’m glad that the King and Queen were able to give birth to Jean. It is normal for his sister to want the position of the Queen by making her husband the King but it feels so sad to see her wanting to kill her brother just because of that position. It is a very sad thing.

Anyway, I’m glad that the farmer did not kill Jean. Instead he continued to take care of him but had to let him go on the long run. It is good to see that he has a shepherd that acts like his companion. Let’s see what will happen between Jean and the owner of the two dogs

Very powerful story you have here. If only the little poor boy has knew, he will have prepared much more for the future and to be in a more safer side. Well I guess he was not expecting that and this is the valid point I picked from this story. We should be prepared any season and any time no matter what. It is really vital so that things will not actually meet us suddenly. I can't say it is his fault though. It was just life that was unfair to him

The king of France must have really been cherishing his only daughter and son thinking that why he does not have a son. And this is the issue that has been affecting a lot of homes and houses, some husband always want a son and so when they don't finally get the son, they begin to blame their wife why she wasn't able to give them a son which to me is not supposed to be so. Those type of thought is always strong to torment one every single time. Wow 21 years old was so young to have come to the throne. I doubt if he will know anything about rulership and how to be a king. What a fateful life the king also live that at the end of the day, he was not able to get a son for himself. That will have really been painful. Quite so painful if I am in that shoe also. Well thanks goodness that before he lives, he was able to handover his daughter to a well reputable king to take care of because that is also very necessary.

This is challenging for the King's son to hide him I hope he will face her sister courageously. I hope to read the next part of the story from you soon.

The lake scenery is wonderful. I hope you had great time there.

thanks to the farmer for keeping jean safe.
i envy his courage.
at the end jean is going to be a powerful king

Looks amazing! It must feel good to walk around this beautiful lake at night.

Night view of this lake is attractive and impressive

I imagine it is a must-see tourist attraction for visitors to Coquitlam, in addition to the light show in December and January, there are many other recreational activities that can be done on the lake? like kayaking, fishing or just relaxing by the water's edge.

We are rooting for Jean to go on an adventure without complacency in her own reality.

The story of the man with two dogs evolves in an intriguing and slightly mysterious way. The story represents a traditional fairy tale, containing classic aspects of kingship and peril, the protagonist’s adventure. Symbolically, the faithful white lamb that accompanies Hansel and Gretel truly makes this story memorable. The change to your personal experience at Lafarge Lake, which creates a striking difference enables readers enjoy both the impressive world of folklore and observe it in fantastic surroundings. The leitmotif of storytelling combined with personal reflections creates an engaging and versatile post. I look forward to more stories from your translations and peeks into you world!

I am happy that you shared this beautiful place to your hive community. this lake is beautiful.
