THE MAN WITH TWO DOGS

man_with_2_dogs_3.jpg
The castle in the forest.

Every day Jean, thanks to his two dogs, alone caught as much game as the other eleven hunters combined. So he was in his master's good graces. But his companions did not like him; they were jealous and did not wish him any good. When their master praised his address to them:

"Of course", they replied, "with the dogs he has! If we had his dogs, each of us would do as much as him!"

One day, they locked Brise-Fer and Sans-Pareil in one of the castle towers. When it came time to go hunting, Jean could no longer find his dogs. No matter how much he whistled for them, looking for them everywhere, it was a wasted effort.

So he had to leave without them. But barely had he entered the forest when he saw himself surrounded by all kinds of wild beasts, wolves, foxes, and wild boars, which bared their teeth and seemed ready to tear him to pieces.

"My God!", he said to himself, "I am going to be devoured by these beasts. Ah! if I had had Brise-Fer and Sans-Pareil here!"

No sooner had he pronounced their names than Brise-Fer and Sans-Pareil found themselves near him. And wolves and foxes and wild boars to flee as quickly as possible, seeing them arrive!

That day he again took, as usual, a quantity of game of all kinds, and in the evening, when he returned to the castle, his companions were very surprised to see how loaded he was.

"How", they said to themselves, "could the two dogs have escaped?"

And they went to look at the tower. Brise-Fer and Sans-Pareil had returned there.

"How the hell does he do it?"

Jean, realizing that his companions were not animated by any good feelings towards him, feared some bad turn of theirs and said to himself one day:

"I think the best thing I can do is get out of here as quickly as possible."

So he left, in the middle of the night, taking his two dogs. And he went wandering on adventures, but without worrying about anything, now that he knows what his dogs are worth.

Passing through a forest, he met a rider, dressed all in red and mounted on a white horse.

The rider came to him and asked:

"What are you doing around here with your two dogs?"

"Well, I'm looking for a master."

"Are you a good shot?"

"It was precisely because I was considered too good a shot that I had to leave the castle where I was."

"Well! Do you want to be the guardian of my wood?"

"Yes, I want it".

"It’s agreed. Here are five coins that I give you; and if you never give them all five at once, you will always have five coins in your pocket, however often you put your hand in it... Then, when you want to sleep, lie down on the ground, wherever you will find you, and you will think you are in a feather bed."

“I like it,” said Jean.

Then they went their separate ways.

Jean began to wander through the woods, accompanied by his two dogs and his rifle on his shoulder. There was no shortage of game and he killed it at will. But no matter how much he walked, going ever further, in all directions, he found no end to the woods, and he encountered neither habitation nor any human being.

Part 4

Hello, my name is Vincent Celier.

I am writing translations of folk tales that I found in public domain French books, so that people who do not understand French may enjoy them too.

Because he was too good a hunter, Jean had to leave the castle.

Now he is a gamekeeper/ranger in a forest that seems to be really huge and where there are no houses.

Will he be able to find an exit?

I am sorry to have waited so long to make this post.

The truth is that for all my life, I have never liked to write. I am still amazed that I have started a blog. In fact, there was a time when I did not post for almost a year.

Let me tell you a true story.

For my first post as a French Navy officer, I spend a year in Tahiti in the Pacific Ocean.

As it was prohibitively expensive to phone from France, and I did not write to my parents for five months after I arrived in Tahiti, they were worried and wanted to have news from me.

One day, the ship I was posted on received a message from the French Navy headquarters in Paris saying that as such a date and time Capitaine de Vaisseau Yves Dyèvre will call Enseigne de Vaisseau Vincent Celier on such a frequency for testing.

The ship captain was very surprised when he read this message so he asked me what was the matter.

I replied that Yves Dyèvre was the brother of my mother Marie Dyèvre and I guessed that he wanted to talk to me because my mother had asked him because she had not received any letter from me for months.

And indeed that was the reason he wanted to talk to me.

I sent a letter to my parents apologizing for my behavior.

I'll try to post more regularly now, but I cannot promise anything.

We have to wait for your post everyday, you have posted after seven days and when your post didn't come, it seemed like the day was not completed, so we keep waiting for your post and about the story. I would like to say that the way we know that Jealousy comes into every human being when another human being or anyone like that is developing, then the human being should develop his own. The only way to save one's success is to not share one's secrets with many people, and it is better that all of us should not share our secrets with any other person, and the way we do this too. It has been seen that the dog is the most faithful animal among animals.

It's a pity the ill will of this fellow hunters forced Jean to depart the castle where he had found good fortune. And now he has been taken into the service of an unknown man, taking care of his forests. Jean is in a dilemma because the foreat seems to have no end. But I'm confident he will find a way out soon, maybe with the help of his, two resourceful dogs. I have a feeling the dogs will bring him good fortune. Let's watch and see what happens.

Thanks for sharing.

I think you can still develop the writing habit even at your age. But anyway just take your time and post to Hive at your own time. That's just alright, you don't have to force it. Goodbye and God bless.

I am very happy that Jean decided to leave after the incidence of the dogs, before their mischiefs could bring grave consequences.
But I was wondering how the dogs escaped to help him with his hunting in the forest and then came back to the locked up place.
The horse rider gave Jean five coins that would never expire as far as he didn't spend all.... Hmmm.
We missed you sir, please don't stop writing for the pleasure it gives, and I have been able to read stories from the other end of the world.

Jean, a skilled hunter with his loyal dogs, faces the envy of his companions. His prowess is challenged when Brise-Fer and Sans-Pareil are imprisoned. Upon losing them in the hunt, he fears being devoured by wild beasts, but when he invokes his dogs, they appear and scare away the predators. Distrustful of his companions, Jean decides to leave with his faithful companions. On his journey, a mysterious horseman offers him to be a guardian of the forest in exchange for five inexhaustible coins and a bed of feathers on any floor.

Sometimes it is difficult for all of us to write, ideas do not come to us and other times they arise like a river.

Jean's two brilliant dogs caught more than all the other hunters combined, bringing him envy and jealousy. This is true in the world, too. I'm sure Jean will find her way out, and now I'm looking forward to seeing if he'll be the guardian of the forest and have a great adventure.

It's hard for anyone to write. It's hard for me, too.
I can relate to your sincere story.

"We're not laughing because we're happy,
Laughing makes you happy," i recalls.
So I think.
I'm not writing because I'm happy,
If you write steadily, you will be happy.

If you write steadily little by little, it becomes an oasis in life.

I was waiting for your post as I was worried about why You are not posting about a week.
I like to read your post as it comprises of interesting stuff and divert mind from daily busy routine.
You are saying right. In Navy, Army,no one allowed to use mobile and parents worried about their childs.
If we talk about the story, the same thing we can see every where.
Peoples when see someone in comfort, they became jealous and wants to snatch this thing from others.
On the other hand, some people exists who wants to have things just like others and try hard to attain their task.
Jealousy is not a good thing. We should be careful about it how peoples got prettiest things and we should try our best and believe in our fate.
Hoping for the best for Jean but feeling sad about lamb who he has exchanged.

Jean and his dogs together became the envy of the people in the castle because of their hunting prowess and it did get them into real trouble.
Who's the horse rider in red? I feel he's not human, a fairy maybe but I'm yet to know if he's a good or bad one.
The forest appears to be endless, why?
These and much more I would find in the upcoming episodes.
Once again, welcome back ☺️

Truly I missed you on hive, i was so worried about you and I wish I had a way to reach you immediately. Thank God you are back.

I felt worried no seeing you write on hive, I could not imagine less how your parents felt not hearing from you for over a year. They is a saying "A mother's love holds no bond" i believed your mother was worried the most.

Jean is having a good time hunting with his dogs and becoming the favorite to his master among his companions. Leaving was good decision, let's just wait to know how his new ranger job goes.

Wow, what an thrilling story about Jean!
It feels like he has needed to modify to a completely one of a kind life after leaving the fortress. Being a ranger in any such large forest without a homes have to be quite a project, but I'm certain Jean can be able to cope with it together with his searching capabilities. I hope he reveals peace and happiness in his new home in the wooded area and that his trustworthy puppies will accompany him on all his adventures.
How interesting to observe his tale!

It's not a good deal for Jean he left the good and accept the ways to struggle out of castle. It's hard to work under some one else orders but I hope he could make great efforts and find best way of living or may be the dogs become his good luck charms and his life changes after some times.
Ooh I understand but it's a great story excitingly waiting for next part.

Nice story with lesson Sir... and i also know all tales and stories that describe by our elders always give us moral lessons. And this story, reality shows a negative nature of jealousy and its bad impacts with other relations. On the other hand, you also teaches us the lesson about loyalty with your companion just like Jean's bond with their dogs. And at the end lesson is prepare ourself with theory of necessity. like how Jean enable himself to survive in forest.

I actually feel Jean took the right step by leaving that place. That’s just how life is. When people see that you are very good at something, the always want to try to bring you down just like the locked the two dogs of Jean in the cage but I’m glad they still came to rescue him.

That’s commitment and it is obvious that the dogs love him but I still miss his white lamb and still have a feeling that the lamb may even be better than the two dogs. It may not be in the term of fighting but maybe protection in another way

When I was young I use to travel a lot, I use to do track and field and had the same behavior, this was the 90s, no smart phone, not much internet like no days, at first my mother use to worry every time I go to a competition out of the country and other kids parents where the ones who told her how I was doing, eventually she stops worrying and always said "If I dont know from him its because everything is fine" jajajaja I didnt like to take pictures or videos either, I just didnt without reason, now days I regret not doing it, live and learn I guess

No one in this world can love like parents. The good thing is that you apologized to them again

Most people struggle to write in general. Sitting down and actually finishing something in words takes extreme dedication and focus.

Nice to see you're back. I can understand not liking to write. I suggest you write only when you want to. Once you are inspired to write, maybe you can write two to three posts. You can post one that day, and post the other on the next day.

It's good to see you back in one piece 😊
I thought perhaps you were not feeling too well but please don't leave us for this long again.🙏

I also have a hard time bringing myself to write posts. But it’s not difficult for me to write comments.

Growing up I hate dogs even though most people always have them as pets, I always find it difficult to see them as pets most especially when they are barking and want to bite one. But reading this story today and this particular chapter, it makes me to loves dog much more. The truth of the matter is I always admire people who have dog as pet. In as much as they are friendly, treating and attending to them are always demanding. I have always knew in this types of situations, people will envy and be jealous of you and so it is actually expected. Just that we must always keep to still doing good no matter what others think actually. Even those complaining that if they have those dogs, they will do much as or like him, I can say it is a lie because those types of people even though they are given the same privilege, they might not be able to do that which he is doing. Jealous people

People can sometimes be wicked, could you imagine how the rest of the hunters were envying Jean because he was doing better than them, they went up to the extent of even wanting to kill him. I just thank God that Jean was brave and he noticed that his colleagues were not happy with him because he was doing better than them and he quickly left that place.
I just pray and hope that gets what he wants from his new master.

I just thank God you are okay because I have been wondering what made you stop posting for some days now.
Sometimes writing can be tiring, it also happens to me too sometimes, I will just wish to take a break. I am just happy that you are back.

So interesting
I'm in love with the lines
Next episode please 🙏
