"The Chianca Amara" or (the stone of blood and tears)

in #travel7 years ago

The town of Vieste is located in the province of Foggia, Italy, and is known as the "Pearl of the Gargano". I'm spending my vacation there since 2010 and every year there is something new to be discovered. Also the story of this town is interesting and sometimes sad. For instance walking in the town I found what is named The Chianca Amara or if we want to translate this name in english it may be The Stone of blood and tears.

Why this name? What happened there?
On this rock, in fact, in the sixteenth century, in July 1554, were killed by decapitation, almost 5000 viestani, by Turkish hands. Other people were token as slaves. Almost 7000 people lost their lives and freedom.
That's why the whole Gargano coast that goes from Vieste to Peschici is dotted with ancient watchtowers, generally quadrangular, whose purpose was to defend themselves from the enemy coming from the sea.

Humanity should learn from so sad stories!
