Stupa for the Great Monk and the Stone Lantern in Sin Reuk Sa Temple, Yeo Ju City, Korea

in #travel6 years ago

There was a stupa on the hill behind the temple. This stupa was made for the great monk Na Ong.
The monk Na Ong passed away 1376 AD. He had lived for 56 years old.
He was very famous monk and a spiritual teacher of the King.
It was Goryeo dynasty when he passed away.
The King ordered to build a stupa for him.
It is said that his stupa was far from the style of that time.
Some scholars told the style of the Stupa for the Monk Na Ong was the example of the stupas in Choson dynasty which succeeded Goryeo dynasty.

But in my view this stupa looked as same as that of real Buddha.
There are several stupas for real sarira of Buddha in Korea,
The bell style of stupa was the typical model for the real sarira stupa in Korea.

Below is the stupa for Buddha in Ton Do Sa temple in Yang San

There was a stone lantern in front of the stupa and the carved relief was very unique comparing with other lanterns. The relief on the lantern was so vivid due to the material. It was marble.

He is a great monk in history of Goryeo. He did a significant job to assist king.

I love the artistic detail that shown in the pictures.

The monk Na Ong must be a very important for the King during his years as a monk in that temple @slowwalker and the bell Stupa does proves his significance in that Goryeo dynasty many centuries ago.

Beautiful photo.
I always feel you are not just photographing an object, but giving detailed information about this temple. I feel when the tone of photographing the stupa is equipped with carvings on the wall showing your interest in archeology.
Something that is not owned by most photographers.
