Ecency made a new update recently showing views on posts as well as devices used to open posts. The read time is suspect at 7.4 seconds which is odd considering Peakd shows 4.5 mins on their dashboard. (total view counters are separate between Ecency and Peakd)
Ive even had a lot of people come up to me and asked when Vibes might get a mobile app, to which my answer is almost always "never" as Vibes doesnt generate any revenue to justify further expenditure and if I made a token to support development you would all dump it on day 1, lets be honest here. 😂
Otherwise the only thing that would work would be a DHF proposal that would basically just create another Ecency or Peakd that is only sustained via DHF. Im not sure I want to do that. Im sure I dont. 😅
But I do feel there is a need from the community to shift our focus to mobile first development elsewhere where its possible. Blogging is outdated as is. Desktop focused blogging is even more so.
Now, people might conclude from the screenshot above from ecency that mobile is preferred to desktop in general. You cant really draw that conclusion from a single screenshot, but what you can do is conclude that there is visible demand for it.
That said, this should at least serve as a pointer of sorts for anyone developing Hive based apps. Maybe do some deeper market research. If we want to reach a broader audience and drive engagement, mobile-first development needs to be part of the convo.
The demand is there, its on us how we meet it.
This all ties into the wider discussion of user experience.
We should have made apps that is a front end + UI/UX builder. Simple you create name, logo and add features that you feel are necessary the way that you are able to tweak and suit to your community or your idea. It would give needed confidence and would eliminate all confusion.
At this moment it's like I want to have simple interaction :
Hey I wanna post - OK - "figure this out" :
Instead of "here is your switch" :
Yeah, pretty much that.
I consider @ecency an awesome mobile Hive DApp. We need to strengten that instead of building a complete new one. It would be also very cool to integrate @threespeak more, as it is now more of a stand alone.
Its a good start but for me it feels like a port instead of a mobile first app. You could probably cut half the stuff in there. But more dapps need to go this route definitely.
What would you cut?
Id have to sit down and list it all. But even beyond that theres the problem with the philosophy of every "everything dapp" we have.
Its a waste of time to go into it. Been talking about it for years. Last year I tried explaining to dapp owners what works and what doesnt based on feedback from new users, yelling in mattermost.
Peakd did make the change to its wallet based on my design but not much beyond that changed. And that took a lot of time.
Its not worth my time and frustration.
Do elaborate please, we try to keep mobile app more lean and add only essential features without overcomplicating. Our website however, has way more features and it is mobile friendly but meant to include extensive/advanced features in simplistic way possible
You can upload videos on Ecency mobile app too, powered by 3speak, try it out. We are hoping to incorporate their API further if there is way to fetch video feeds etc.
How does that work? Haven‘t seen anything yet
As you can see in screenshot, there is video button to select and record video, it will upload to 3speak servers and once encoding is done you can insert it into your post and publish
Thanks, will try it out 👍🏻
Most the world is on mobile, I got rid of my desktop nearly 5 years ago.
Everyone say you can use peakd on your mobile… sure, I guess you can… is it a nice experience though 🤦♂️
Travelfeed put out a mobile first app, I think it’s a little hidden gem for any quick photo based posts… it’s called truuvl on App Store
I really agree with this. I only use my phone
I think both front-ends work well for the mobile and desktop versions. Even d.buzz which maintains an interface similar to X is perfect for my mobile. Although their plan for comment posts is a bit strange. I hope they change it
Mobile (as in a phone) is ok for short posts. But I would rather stab my eyes out that type something even as long as this post on a phone. Besides, laptops are mobile too. But then, maybe I've just reached the "get off my lawn" stage of my life.
As far as viewing content, the difference is less stark. I tend to view stuff here on a desktop or laptop but do so on a phone as well.
Thats the frontend philosophy problem that I mentioned. Some things dont work, yet people keep forcing them to work.
That would certainly help in adoption for these young generation(s)
Having too many mobile apps isn't what we actually need. It is developing the present ones to have exciting features. Ecency is trying and I so much love using it. I've even notice that there is Waves App also from Ecency
We need niche specific mobile dapps. I agree that we dont need more general ones like Ecency.
We completely agree
There have been some decent ones but they always fall by the wayside. I totally agree though.
There are a lot of dark depths functionality wise that mobile doesn't have to display but by the same dint most feel they have to, to offer the best experience. Which is paradoxical to say the least 😀
There was one modern looking one that looked great. Dapplr I think. There were some problems with the team I think. Looked really smooth though. Shame it didnt pan out.
Absolutely.
I mean for Vibes, if I had a mobile dapp for it....
id completely cut blogging out of it, restrict uploads to couple sentences, turn Hive comments into posts.
Heres just a random easy dumb thing to get rid of I looked at for 1 sec...
"Blog, All my posts, replies, my snaps, comments". - All could probably be reduced to 1 page, max 2. Instead we have 5. 😂
For a mobile dapp you could probably cut more than 50% of whatever you want to call it... functionality, options, etc.
Dapplr!! That was the best one by far I think.
Yeah, it really is about simplification. Users want that, clean interface, no clutter.
Not all the settings and display options under the sun. Most are happy with dark mode and a feed. It would be good to have a universal feed.
Strip it all out!! 😀😀
Brother... I have to show you something. First off, I don't know what it is. I've been trying to put my finger on it and I can't.
But here's the deal. This is the type of thing that doesn't have to make sense to make perfect sense. Something maybe akin to when you are driving, you reach your destination, yet you can't remember driving at all.
Its a long video... I thought I was going to stop watching it a few times, and it kept on sucking me in.
Once i was done, and started to play back what I had just seen in my head. I thought to myself. I'm going to go out on a branch and guess that Meesterboom is going to get it too. He's got my twisted sense of canonicity. Don't know if you are on discord, so I'm slapping it here.
I might end up writing about this channel too... I have no idea what i found, but I love it.
Lol it took a few minutes before I started to get into it. I have it on in the background. It reminds me very much of some of the British comedies that are in vogue. It is quite good!
