My Mom's ancestors were from that part of the world (Russia/Ukraine) and the recipe was handed down through the generations. I had no idea that the dish was originally Turkish! I told her that and she was surprised too. It makes sense though since civilization began in that region. The mashed potatoes go so well with it (as I can imagine the polenta does too).
