Impermanence and the Blockchain
How ironic!
Blockchain is supposed to be permanent. Think again. When you where touted about CDs from cassette tapes, you were told CDs are 'permanent', same thing about VHS tapes to DVDs. I remember, I was told the same.
Then my kids were born, and I have seen them play frisbee with my CDs and DVDs with horror initially. I have seen them break the Finding Nemo DVD twice! Back then it wwas $30 a pop and no discount. Thanks to Disney + (god knows how much I pay for subscriptions now!) I neither have a DVD collection, nor that I miss it. I don't regret that I trashed my CD collection. It was nothing much to talk about anyway. No regrets.
An old pond
A frog jumps in
The sound of water
That is Matsuo Bashō!
Thanks to @dbooster I was reading about Haiku today, and this seems apt.
Created using Grok; Prompt: the same haiku above, but no frog:)
Do we really need the frog? We don't.
Here Basho depicts the impermanence of life with the sound and ripple perhaps. It was there, and then it is gone. Perhaps the ripple says a little bit, and then that will be gone too. This is perhaps one of the cornerstone if Zen Buddhist philosophy. Mujo.
Funding
Today I have a job, tomorrow I may not.
Today your project is funded, tomorrow it is not.
Such is life. I am glad, our blockchain is based on this principle, whether knowingly or not. I think this sense of "impermanence" is valuable for the blockchain. It drives competition, and honesty.
I remember a statement from Khal 2 years ago when he was trying to get funding on the first iteration of Leo's DHF proposal. At the time he was clueless about how DHF works (perhaps still is?), he didn't even know that DHF funding is not permanent. He said the following directly to me: (Aug 09, 2023) Yes, I have long memory.
I'm not trying to convince - as
- #1, it's already approved and I don't need your vote.
- #2 it doesn't seem you can be convinced. I was invited here to answer questions in a transparent and fair way and I am very open to constructive criticism so that we can bring some value to Hive

For the record, that proposal was funded. I was against it, but it was funded.
Did it bring some value to hive? I don't think so. But you be the judge of that. I have already expressed my opinion on the subject.
To any/all projects who are defunded
DHF funding is something you have received for a while. However,
- how many community members did you talk to?
- how many people did you convince?
- how many people directly know what you do for the hive blockchain?
Very few.
Here is what I suggest:
If you have a DHF proposal and you like to get DHF funding, you need to make yourself visible. This is not optional. You need to tell us directly, one person at a time, what can you do for me, and the community. That is the way to do campaign and get vote.
- Buy some hive, your stake matters, shows your commitment to the chain
- Make post about your budget
- How you spend the previous money you got and how are you going to spend it in future
- Convince one individual at a time, yes, it is necessary
For example, I have 1M HP. I vote on Return Proposal. So potentially I can unvote Return, and vote your proposal. That is 2M HP swing.
Currently, VSC proposal is only 4M HP vote off. So they just need to convince 2 individuals like me, or 10 individuals who holds 1/10 th HP and is currently voting return.
That doesn't seem particularly hard from a lobby point of view.
Good Luck!
Some long needed transparency is definitely in order. It's not just a case of get funding and hide till it's pulled.
I would like to see KPIs and progress measurements against them and as you say, hold a bit of damned HP!
Yes, this has been happening for years. Hopefully we can expect some changes.
It would be nice if it was a start
I think, this is the most important aspect of judging a project, if it's an interesting project, then most will know, without much campaign, because it will directly influence or benefit the entire chain.
Yes. A good product sells itself without any marketing. Although such products are rare but they do exist.
Next you can expect some marketing to spread the word.
We know that a bad product and no marketing is clearly a death for that product.
Nice post, I was watching the last few weeks the return proposal.
Being it very high thinking, how can smaller projects with less visibility ever get so much upvote.. Seems to be strong arm between some of the bigger projects.
Now i see there is more to it and the number of proposals is limited.
I believe the transparency is very important, what will it bring back for the community.
Now the return proposal is back to "normal" is a more achievable amount imho.
Yes the position of return proposal is less important than people perceive.
If you have a project which want to get funded that project must have some skin in the game. You must be visible and transparent. You must interact with people and tell them about your project and how it brings value to an individual and the community.
Many of the currently funded projects don't do that.
By the way; never say "nice post" in a hive comment:)
Chances are you will get this..
My kids wore out some DVDs, but there was no streaming back then. That may have been a good thing.
The proposals thing has been stirred up now and people will be upset. I've been asked a few times to change my votes to help projects and have done it sometimes. For now it won't make enough difference unless they can persuade other big accounts. I do think that the projects need to give proper progress reports to keep their funding. Doing that once a week/month is not too much to ask.
I like upset people.
Better than complacency!
I know I have given you hard time on this, but that's for good reasons. You and many others don't have knowledge or visibility on many things. I don't particularly like that.
Now it's open and visible.
I go by what I know and consider my actions. I do feel the weight of responsibility, but I hope people weren't going to get too vindictive over such matters. I care about Hive and we need to stand together for that.
Don't worry things are already back to normal :)
You let them loot your money, believe me, they will :)
You brought some nostalgia to me… I had a huge cd collection that had to get rid of when I got married since we were moving to a small 2 bedroom apartment!
It is good that you have a good memory like that … sometimes i go back to posts 2 years ago and get surprised with my own things that I wrote! Usually I remember the topics that I wrote about but not details and how I wrote about them ( I am my worst critic for sure).
Anyways, when I saw the title of the post I got curious because there are things that for sure it is permanent ! Like this comment or the comment that you mentioned and they will last more compared to our limited memory! But what you brought is for sure not permanent. All the mechanics of the blockchain aren’t permanent! Even the author rewards can change or end for one day to another, sometimes I think that would have some benefits for the value of Hive.
DHF spending is always a very controversial subject at Hive! It brings the most apocalyptical talks in my dms but it for sure scares us with daily values being spent! Something that I talked some times with some people is that all the proposals are made in an amateur way. I think you have or had some experience with academia and probably you had some experience with grant writing and reporting. Probably you know how detailed we need to be to justify every penny spent.. we can’t just guess that we need 100k USD without detailing how we are going to spend and after a report of what we spent and many of them we need to return it (specially if it is a gov grant).
If I use this type of mindset with our proposals in here , as a reviewer, I wouldn’t approve any of the proposals right now even if some of the projects are vital for the blockchain.
Nothing is permanet :)
In case of a meteorite impact, we are all dead :)
Do you think BTC can survive a meteorite impact? It is not that it never happened to the planet earth, LOL!
Hahaha also if something happens with our power grid? 🤣
Lol. good one
Yes, I have been a broken record on the subject :)
I totally agree with this. I think we need to look at these more like grants are handled in the real world. I can't think of a single grant I apply for in my job where I don't have to keep detailed records of how I spend the money that has been entrusted to me and the outcomes I create from it.
Snap - and it's measured against the budget, forecasts and delivery plan in the original proposal.
I say:
take a number and stand in a line :)
We have all done it.
There was a garage sale the other day, and there were cassettes. That was very interesting, as even DVDs and CDs are hard to play these days, nobody has the devices anymore - especially here in Ecuador. Developing countries sometimes just skip a technology :-D
About the other subject, if I understand correctly, the Return-Proposal is meant as a barrier - everyone who's actively voting on DHF-Fundings, can give his vote to the Return-Proposal. If other proyects don't the same amounts of voting-weight or more, they don't get any funding. So it's kind of a safety mechanism that makes it harder to get funding, ensuring better quality?
Is the return proposal one single one that every other funding-proposal has to surpass, or is there one return proposal for every funding proposal?
Yes.
If a project proposal is above return it is funded today (tomorrow it may not be)
If a project proposal is below return it is not funded today (tomorrow it may be)
Yes. It is a safety mechanism, so that when I write a propsal saying give @beelzael $1000/day from DHF, because he is a nice guy, is not funded :)
There is only one return proposal.
I'd totally support that proposal :-D Thanks for the explanation!
My biggest concert with the DHF is the lack of any accountability whatsoever. Even the good proposals are "trust me bro", and with the bad ones you can almost see the wink wink. I always go back to saying if a proposal can't document every single HBD spent, funding should be instantly revoked.
Anyway, great analysis of the haiku, probably the most famous haiku in the world. Once long ago I did a post on it if you are interested (https://peakd.com/@dbooster/old-pond-haiku-of-japan-100). That was made on the old chain. I should go back and update it one of these days, or do a new write up of it, because more can always be said (and always as I read my own writing, I get frustrated at how I wrote what I wrote and what I missed).
Can't say this better!
I am requesting from ages to change this.
I am touched! Thank you.
I thought it is appropriate with our current DHF situation. Japanese philosophy is something I feel very deeply about.
Can you believe that I have never been to Japan! There are cities, Tokyo, Kyoto, Sapporo.......I feel like I know the streets without even being there!
Thanks to Murakami!
I should read more Murakami. Usually when I have free time it is looking up old haiku or other old poetry, so my only fiction reading time is when I read to my kids before they go to bed.
Actually, on that note, if you want a delightful somewhat short story set in modern Japan, check out The Miracles of the Namiya General Store by Keigo Hagashino. He is one of the most popular authors in Japan, normally writing "Columbo" style detective stories, so you may have heard the name. For this one he breaks out of his normal topic and writes a much more inspiring story. I got it to read for my oldest (he's 12), but I really enjoyed it as well and I think adults can probably appreciate it more than kids. I should do a review because it was just a great story that I really enjoyed. Here it is on Amazon if you are interested: https://amazon.com/Miracles-Namiya-General-Store/dp/1975333861
Thank you for the recommendation. Got it already. Flying to Dubai this weekend, should be able to finish it.
Your kids are similar age as mine. I get a lot of book recommendation from my 13 yr old. Looking forward to this book.
Murakami is in my heart!
Wild Sheep Chase!!
Do it man! You will never look back :)
I hope you enjoy it!
Everything I want to say about this topic has been said already by others. Shall I repeat and recycle their comment, or shall I tell you what a great post this is 🤔
LOL!
Thank you for saying it.
That "nice post" comment always brings out the devil in me! :)
There needs to be far more transparency and accountability on the funded whatevers - it should be very clear where it is going, regular updates, timelines, accounting. They should be run like small businesses getting government funding. And if they are a funded dev, there should be dev updates too, rather than the assumption that something is getting done. We haven't had a hardfork for years, and while there is no need to hardfork for no reason, shouldn't there be something announced about where we are going as a chain at a general level?
I have been requesting that for years!
Are they listening to it?
I don't know.
If you give people free money, why would they try anything different? I'd just take the free money.
So block trades unvoted the return proposal? What was it all about? Is there an explanation?
Well no explanation is needed. Votes are explanation.
BT voted Return Saturday AM, unvoted Sunday AM. It’s back to as is now, with a slight twist. That’s all.
I wrote this 5 minutes ago under another author's post.
Stage ZERO.
Show us they you exist!
I can't say that for most.
Speaking of VSC, would you mind sharing your opinion on that one?
No idea at this point. They are funded back.
I will find out more.
Tons of info available at https://vsc.eco and github.com/vsc-eco
I'm still getting confused about some of the issues here, that not anyone problem though. As a new user it will take time to understand the policy and protocols involved in the process of project development in a large community like #hive.
But from your argument I can see a certain amount of prospects that you are trying to explore about funding and defund of projects.
I still need to deep down more into the whole process and how it's been done.
Thanks for sharing insight.
Yes, you are new and these are old problems with a lot of nuances.
If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it.
Definitely, but one need to know some history and things happening around it's world. Thanks for your advice though.
Noted.
Please don't use any of these in future at least on my post
Alright.
Noted.
Nice post
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It's by @meesterboom
It's a classic
Nice comment 😁
Some projects have very high funding with no tangible results. The return proposal is a wake up call for projects to be more transparent.
well it didn't last long unfortunately
There must be accountability
Things evolve even if we show resistance, change is inevitable.
