The paddle

Glorious is the only way to describe it; an enjoyment that seeped right down into the depth of my soul and found a place to reside, if only for a few hours.

Glorious was the sound of splashing from my paddle as it dipped into and exited the water. It was the sound of birds calling: The kookaburra, crimson rosella, musk lorikeet, red-browed firetail, little black cormorant, Caspian tern, peregrine falcon and many more. They provided a chorus of cheeping and chirping, that didn't seem out of place despite my mission to find silence, as they wheeled overhead watching me as I paddled on the waters below. The weather had turned it on for me, a typical South Australian spring day, and I could think of no better way to spend any given Monday than this.

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about a new hiking spot I'd checked out. You can see the post here but essentially I'd headed to a place called Warren Reservoir to solitary-hike in the pine forests and scrub that surrounds it. I said I'd return and do some kayaking in the reservoir which has just been opened for recreational kayaking and I figured today was a great day to make it happen. I really needed it today.

20211018_120422.jpg

The reservoir itself isn't huge however I kayaked there for most of the day although I say kayaked however I did a good deal of floating around as well. It was a pretty cool floating day as there was hardly any breeze; I'd just stop at some point in the middle and drift along watching the screen-saver scenes slip by me. It wasn't all floating about though and I put in some work on the paddle working my way around the waterway exploring as I went, enjoying as I went and allowing some stress to fall away as I went.

I found some really great little beaches that I pulled up on and at one point took a little walk amongst the pines that pretty much grew right up to the waters edge. It was at one of these spots I had some lunch and laid back in the dappled light coming through the trees and snoozed. Don't judge...This kayak-day was all about finding peace and quiet and that usually means a snooze also. If you've done it you'll know what I mean.

20211018_122251.jpg

Warren reservoir is interesting in that it is surrounded by pine forest, Australian scrubland and some farming land so the views change depending on which way a person is looking. It also means some very diverse flora and fauna, the latter of which includes the birds of course plus kangaroos, koalas and I saw some emus also. They weren't interested in me though and I was only passingly interested in them - I was all about the solitude I'd found on the water and the sense of calm that settled upon me.

I paddled and floated right into some really nice feelings within which were welcomed, needed and much appreciated.

I'd packed a basic lunch of dried fruits, nuts, biltong and a few cracker biscuits; I know, it doesn't sound that appetising but for me it's as much about where I am when eating than what I'm eating, the setting. My lunch tasted like a gourmet feast whilst sitting in that shady spot with the birds singing and the lapping of water in perfect counterpoint to one another. There was no human sounds, no humans other than me, and I felt more in-tune with the world, more a part of it and more centered within as I munched my lunch and washed it down with swigs of water. Simple fare and simple moments for a simple man.

After lunch I began the paddle back to the car park as I'd been out for almost four hours already. It took me another ninety minutes to get back to the launching point though and as I paddled I soaked in the feeling I'd gained knowing it would be over all too soon.

In the entire time I didn't say a word - I don't make a habit talking to myself out loud usually. What's funny though is that my mind was quite vacant also, something I really needed; it was quiet.

I tend to over-think things a lot and my mind rarely shuts down but out there on that water it did; I found some respite. I guess I allowed the rhythmic motion of paddling to take over and when simply floating around allowed the sounds, sights and smells of nature to seep in pushing out my own inner-dialogue to be replaced with quietude. I felt good.

Before long the pontoon and car park came into view and I knew I'd have to come back to myself, and the world, to some degree.

20211018_133704.jpg

The pontoon is a bit of a monstrosity to be honest, a real assault on the senses. It's designed for the launching of kayaks and is...Well, it's an eye-sore if you ask me. I don't know why they couldn't have left the bank more natural looking but they didn't so I had to deal with it...And the way I dealt with it was to ignore it completely.

Above you can see me heading in to the shore and the hideous-pontoon-monstrosity ahead. Beyond is the car park and facilities, basically a pretty decent toilet block, and picnic tables and so on. As I paddled in I made a bee-line to the shore to the left of the pontoon, a nice sandy-pebbly little spot perfect for running my kayak up onto.

I'm not much of a wanky-kayak-launching-pontoon user so stayed well clear of that new-fangled nutbaggery. I do it the old fashioned man-style way. As I came in I accelerated a little and beached my yak on that little sandy area then stepped out into the water like a Titan! It worked a treat, no pontoon required.

I carried my yak to the car, strapped it down to the trailer and packed up the rest of my gear for the drive home feeling pretty pleased with my day.

I'd had a really great day, let's call it a life-moment, of solitude and a little exertion. I had some muscle soreness that I knew would get a little worse in time but that's ok because inside I felt pretty nice; settled, content and happy. It was a good day and I'm glad I took the time to get out and about and closer to nature. I'll be back of course, that's a given. Maybe I'll hike or kayak, whatever feels right on the day, but no matter which activity I choose I know I'll enjoy it; Warren Reservoir is that sort of place.

💙So beautiful💚 Great photos to give a real feel of just how picturesque your part of the world is. It was a glorious day indeed, or by the look of these photos.
Kayaking is a great upper body workout, but also a good static exercise for the legs, that's good for toning the muscles. Some stretches afterwards might reduce the soreness later.
I'm sure you'll find a way to fit this into your schedule.
Maybe in the future Cam and I will get some kayaks for the canals. The thing is, you need to have a licence to use a kayak on the canals, yet, you can limitlessly "drink and drive" the narrowboat no problem!😆
I do agree the pontoon is tacky. I think the designer might be my former Aussie landlord/builder; it looks like his preferred style.

It's really great that they've opened up a few reservoirs to recreational kayaking and kayak-fishing (by permit). There's loads of other places to go of course, but it's nice that this place is so close and secluded mostly. I had a good day.

It's weird you need a kayak permit for the canals and I cant see the purpose? Is there a canal-kayak-permit-test? Please say there is not!

And yeah, that pontoon-assfuckery is senseless. Waste of money and it makes the place look commercial not natural. Progress huh? 😕

P.s. I did some stretches...Reached for snacks whilst watching Angels and Demons whilst sitting on the couch grumbling to myself about sore muscles. 🤔😉

No, no test...TF for that! You can buy the licence though. They claim you have access to over 5000 miles of waterways; canals and rivers.
It's a fun way to explore the canals if you don't have a boat I guess.
😆 Haha! Your muscles will hurt more tomorrow. At least you expect it;)

Buy the license. Ah yes, of course. Revenue.

Revenue is all its about.
Cam passed his required drone test, surprisingly there was not fee, but a huge fine of 1000 GBP if caught flying your drone without a licence.

They get at us one way or another.

True!
At least he can get some great overhead shots, and something different in general.

Nice shots. I'm a little slow catching this one. I've been looking at kayak's as well. There is a creek that runs through our property (although I think too small for kayak). The near neighbor has a nice pond, and then there are several lakes around, including the very large lake Champlain.

Hauling them a bit of a hassle though. I was actually looking at this new foldable kayak called an Oru Kayak. It folds up into a briefcase size and only weighs about 20 lbs. (9 kilos). Only takes a few minutes to un-fold or re-fold. They have several models. While I don't think I would take one on whitewater river trips, they seem like ideal for lakes and even limited open water that would be fine for my level of adventures. Anyone ever tried one of these? What was your experience? Their setup videos look pretty amazing.
I'm quite enthralled with the new black one.

Now this is interesting!

I've never seen these so thanks for being a good bad influence and putting something new on my want-list (that list I spend a lot of time denying). I'd not want to get into anything too serious with it as you say but for paddling about like I did in this post it would be perfect! Transportable so can go on road trips easily and by the looks of it it would cut through the water quite nicely. They even ship to Australia.

FYI:

Yes, that the same model I liked, except I really like the new black color version of it. I just found these a couple weeks ago, but definitely keep getting pulled back every time I see a nice kayaking picture posted. The list just keeps growing. I've still got a garage to pay for first!

The black one for sure. Kind of costly though. It's a great concept though and so much easier than hauling a typical yak or canoe around.

hehehe i was there with you.

as i read this post - i was there with you. the other day, i was listening to a new song - or actually - i think it was an old song, but resposted by @edprivat and right in the middle of him singing it, a bird whistled... and it was so lovely.
it was so beautiful and healing to hear them both...

and that's how it felt to read this post of yours. just so healing
i'm so glad you got out.

and judge????? honestly - anyone who is judging your nap in that beautiful place has never had a sweet nap with the sunlight filtering through the trees, hypnotizing you into the most peaceful sleep ever! hehehehe i love it!!! and so glad you got it.

i'm also one who can't shut down my mind. i have a few things that work - but most of the time, the brain is on its own and leads me around like a dictator hahahahaha... but it's both a blessing and a curse. I'm just thankful for the times when it does decide to be lulled into peaceful quiet.

so happy you got that my friend. sending you a massive hug right now. feel it??? hehehe

Got your hug but can't hug back, my arms and shoulders are sore from all that paddling yesterday. Lol.

It was a good day for sure and that snooze was timely. It wasn't a long one, maybe 10-15 minutes, but it added to the moment, brought a deeper relaxation.

You better fight through the pain to lift those arms for a hug!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂

And you know what they say... Anything more than 15 minutes in a nap can make you MORE sleepy... So that was absolutely perfect.

Must...fight...the pain...Hug deployment...required...

Happy girl ☺️

That is by far the fanciest way to launch a kayak that I have ever seen! I am surprised it doesnt lift it onto the car for you lol. Nice place to paddle around in.

Haha yeah I know. I'd like to meet the person who thought using this contraption was legit....Although, on second thoughts, no I would not. 🤪

Wow the view is so stunning and mesmerising. Sure you could have made your mind with positive vibes . The chirping sound definitely created some kind of imagination where the nature caress yourself with beautiful songs of god.

I had a really great day indeed and nature all combined to help it along. My neck and shoulders are a little sore today but that's ok, it's worth it for the enjoyment of yesterday.

I'm not much of a wanky-kayak-launching-pontoon user so stayed well clear of that new-fangled nutbaggery.

If ye keep talking like tha, we be calling ye Meester.

I enjoy kayaking for solitude.... But I also have a canoe that has a built in cooler in the center. It's great for going for a nice paddle with a buddy. Paddle upstream for a ways ... then bring the paddles in the hull, enjoy a beverage and let the current bring us back to base while we chat.

I like your canoe idea! I always head up stream first when on a river...Going down then having to paddle back up isn't enjoyable; easier to let the current do the work.

Also, to have something I wrote compared to @meesterboom is a compliment. Thank you. 😊

Lovely place. Glad you were able to find some breathing room.

Go well Galen

I needed to breathe and to find myself.

I hope you're well Andy. x

Looks like fun...and don't forget, if you ever get over to this area, the Kickapoo is a great kayak run as well

I'll be kicking ass at the Kickapoo on my kayak one day for sure! The Kickapoo won't know what hit kicked it once I'm done. Lol.

Having fun and taking time off work is what the mind need to be active sometimes. I seriously need something calming like this before the year runs out. I need to go for vacation and have some fun.

The environment there is pretty lovely and your pictures are cool.

I believe that it's moments like this that make me more efficient and effective at other aspects of life. We can run around at too speed all the time thinking we're being productive but performance declines. A pause and recharge can help keep us at optimal performance.

I hope you get your break before the end of the year.

I do it the old fashioned man-style way

As any self-respecting man-yakker should. Screw the pontoon, full steam ahead!

Too right! Launch pontoon indeed. What tomfoolery is that?!

'Tis but the tomfoolery of those young uninformed knaves who do not yet know the man-style way! And we shall see if they will sink or swim :) !PIZZA

Knaves and bespawlers all, no doubt. Those churls wouldn't know how to man-style-it if they tried. Glos Pautonnier's.

Glos Pautonnier

Had to look that one up :D I guess I need to step up my medieval insult game…

Lol...It's nice to be able to roll out some old-school insults now and then. It makes me feel less a Cottar.

a great place to relax with a kayak, but is the water really that murky?

Yeah, the gum leaves off the trees stain the water that colour. It's all good though, it hides the crocodiles so one can't see them coming when they strike.

Hey there, the experience with the kayak is amazing!

It was a great day although my shoulders and neck are feeling it this morning. 😂

beautiful and fun place

It surely was.

Nothing quite like it. Being right in the middle of mother nature.

Indeed...It was a pretty awesome day for sure.

Nothing like a day on the water in the kayak… We kayaked all summer on Lake Superior Huron and Mazinaw…

Hmm, way better than my spot from yesterday; looks bloody brilliant! Now I want to go.

That's my kind of relaxation (well, except for the muscle soreness, but I can deal with that in exchange for the solitude). I can imagine the peace and quiet you experienced while in the middle of the reservoir. But I haven't experienced kayaking before so I guess I'll struggle, or worse... you know what I mean hehe.

You must have had a great time!

It's not too difficult to kayak, the yak down the floating and the person does the paddling. There's a few little things to master but other than that I think you'd be fine. I hope you get to give it a try.

As soon as I get a chance, I'd love to try kayaking!

I hope so, it's good fun.

With that refreshing view, I won't mind spending an entire week just out and about✨

Yeah, it was pretty nice indeed. Well worth the effort to get there.

Hi @galenkp ! It's been a long time! I miss following your posts. I hope you're fine. I've never paddle before. The views are magnificent. I want to be there. I think I need some muscle pain :p

Oh yeah, been a long time indeed.

It was a really great day and the view, plus the peace and quiet, was much welcomed.

You have listed the things that I’ve needed.

Ah ok, well there's nothing quite like some peace and solitude to nuture the soul.

Absolutely!

This is a wonderful write up man
Keep it up 💪

Thank you, I will try.
