Introducing The Ink Well – A Curie Curated Creative Writing Community

The Ink Well Introduction Title.png

An Inktroduction to the Well

This community was born from a collaboration between myself (@raj808) and @stormlight24.

As long term curators, we both wanted to build a community that could be the catalyst for a renaissance of fiction and poetry on steem.

The Ink Well is a place where the current story tellers and poets of steem can find support for their work. We also want to provide a space for learning through the sharing of ideas and content, as well as encouraging new creative writers on steem.

With the support of @curie we will be actively trying to boost the profile of great fiction and poetry on steem. Showcasing the talent that we have on this amazing blockchian, and hopefully providing a reason for many who have left to return.

The great advantage of steem for creative writers is the open aspect of what you can do here. You are not limited by the same considerations as in other online publishing mediums. We have much wider choices in what we choose to write in regards to audience tastes and don't have to cater to advertisers to monetize our writing through the click for pay model. This level of freedom of expression while still being rewarded financially is unique!

But what is even more special about steem for a creative is that it is a perfect environment for experimentation. Over the years I have seen some amazing writing initiatives here that have created the most unique blockchain stories.

This is what we would love to inspire at The Ink Well. Stories and poems that run unfettered in the stream of creative consciousness.

To this end we will be be developing competitions and challenges over the coming months to inspire the muse in you, and fuel the competitive spirit with some prizes 😉

In the future we will explore the possibility of creating a discord community where members can interact, access educational writing guides and attend workshops to help with editing. But for now we would like to keep The Ink well exclusively on chain while the community feature is in such an early development phase.

I hope to see your stories and poems posted to our community page at: The Ink Well.

The Seed of Inspiration

The name for this community grew from an idea that came to me in a dream. As so often happens with creative endeavors, the seed of inspiration grew in my subconscious only to sprout to full awakening through research.

Wells are a powerful archetypal construct of mystery and healing power. In ancient mythology, superstitions about the healing powers of blessed holy wells ran deep. In Irish mythology druids performed pagan ceremonies around wells and the importance of water in the lives of early mankind was paramount. The process of drawing the water of life from beneath the earth was considered an almost magical act, like a gift from the underworld. Similarly, wells have great significance in ancient Christian traditions and have been places of pilgrimage for millennia.

The idea of this joining of two worlds, drawing life giving water from the darkness, is the perfect analogy for the gift of creativity. It’s that moment of inspiration when a poem pours forth seemingly from nowhere, or the steady flow of words that build like a river into patterns of plot in a short story - these are the moments that fuel the fire burning in a creative writers’ belly.

After a little thought about how I could make the idea of the well of creativity relate to writers, I suddenly remembered the famous writers group The Inklings which included C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien.

The Inklings were an informal literary discussion group associated with the University of Oxford for nearly two decades between the early 1930s and late 1949.[1] The Inklings were literary enthusiasts who praised the value of narrative in fiction and encouraged the writing of fantasy.

Then that eureka moment happened, when the concept of a wellspring of creativity merged with the word ink, and The Ink Well was born.

A friendly community that can hopefully gather all the fictioneers, poets, dramatists, novelists, scribblers and scribes together to share ideas and draw water from a well spring of inspiration.

"Don't bend; don't water it down; don't try to make it logical; don't edit your own soul according to the fashion. Rather, follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly."

Quote from Franz Kafka

Future Plans for The Ink Well

  • The Ink well has created a dedicated account @theinkwell which will be used in the near future for all competitions and official announcements. To keep up to date with all the happenings in the depths of the well, please follow the @theinkwell account for updates in your feed.

  • All rewards that the @theinkwell earns will be powered up for voting the community and funding competitions. If anyone wants to delegate to The Ink Well we would very much appreciate it, but there are no returns for delegations other than satisfaction in the knowledge that you're helping inspire people on steem.

  • The Ink Well will hopefully be issuing steempeak badges to contributing members dependent on approval from @steempeak. I shall be applying for the @steempeak badges ASAP and will announce them in an upcoming post on the @theinkwell account.

  • When SMT's are finally released from testnet it is my plan to build value for the community through a dedicated proof of brain token. Plans are in the early stages at the moment but I hope to use the network value of the token and community to leverage interest of traditional publishing entities. It is my hope that if the crypto bull starts raging again, I can harness mainstream interest to make The Ink well a kind of sandbox and incubator for talent. A place where literary agents and publishing houses can source new authors. Ambitious I know... but you've got to dream.

In conclusion, we invite all imaginative writers to join us in sharing the exciting future developments on the steem blockchain.

Thanks for reading.

Post by @raj808. This post is set to 75% beneficiary to the @theinkwell account to start building the communities steem power.

Edit: I was soooo tired yesterday after working on various jobs to complete the launch for The Ink Well, that after proofreading the text for this post, I forgot to set the beneficiary to @theinkwell.

To rectify this, I will be sending 75% of the value of this post's payout to the @theinkwell account in liquid steem when this post pays out.

Magnificent initiative, @raj808, to create in union with @stormlight24 and with the support of @curie, this promising community of @theinkwell.
I wish you a fruitful work and long life full of fiction and poetry.
I greet you with much affection.

We are glad you like it! Welcome

Thanks for the welcome, @stormlight24.
Greetings.

Thanks @oacevedo

We're looking forward to building a place where we can all inspire each other to create great stories and poems to enrich steem :)

I totally agree with you, @raj808.
I hope that great stories full of poetry emerge from the inkwell.
Greetings.

Hi @raj808,
This is exciting. Finally, a dedicated home for writers. Often (always) I hesitate to post a story unless it is connected to a contest. But many of the contests are tailored to specific guidelines. It would be nice to just write, to get an idea and go with it, and to know there will be a home, a place for that piece. It feels less cold than posting outside of a community.
Thanks for taking the initiative. Wishing you (all of us) success.
I've never posted on @steempeak. Have to check that out and expand my blogging horizons.
Good luck!!

Ditto that - Thank you for creating this community @raj808 and @stormlight24!
The Well does have archetypal connotations - a continuing source, a cradle, font, fountain, fountainhead, origin, root, seedbed, spring, wellspring - and a bottomless well of ink for the writer promises a Muse that keeps supplying inspiration and ideas. I love the image you conjured - hot air balloon rising, verdant landscape.

Can you imagine joining that writers group --The Inklings--with C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien? Well, we've got Raj and the Ink Well!

Now I've got that group the Ink Spots playing in my mind. Pull up a chair, grab a mug, and let's percolate some stories for the Ink Well!

Milton Drake's words join Ben Oakland's music.

THE JAVA JIVE

I love coffee, I love tea
I love the java jive and it loves me
Coffee and tea and the jivin and me
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a cup!

I love java, sweet and hot
Whoops! Mr. Moto, I'm a coffee pot
Shoot me the pot and I'll pour me a shot
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a cup!

The Well does have archetypal connotations - a continuing source, a cradle, font, fountain, fountainhead, origin, root, seedbed, spring, wellspring - and a bottomless well of ink for the writer.

This 1000X Carol.

It is my hope that The Ink Well can becomes a place for sharing, and mutual support for the creative writers on steem leading by example to draw those who've left back.

I truly believe that the fictioneers (I love that made up word 😉) and poets bring so much unique and interesting creativity to the steem blockchain.

Your writing is great Carol and we're proud to have you over at the ink well.... But it does mean you'll have to write some fiction again soon to post here 😉

P.s. I know you're a technophobe so if you need any help learning how to post to communities please reach out to me in discord and I'll show you step by step. Once you've learned the process it isn't that difficult to be honest.

Thank you Raj - I have tried steempeak and countless apps, and all of them scare me off when they require permissions to do this, that, and the other. I need to get with the program. Thanks for offering to help, and for all your kind words!

Steempeak is so easy to post to communities and then share it on your blog. It is literally a six step process once you're signed in, and very similar to using steemit.

Have you used steempeak to point where you're signed in and written a post?

The only reason I'm asking is that the old system where you tag a post with the name of the community will not work to actually post in a community anymore.

But, with a very small amount of learning, you can do it with these four steps:

  1. sign in to steempeak
  2. click the create post button
  3. write the post exactly like you would in steemit
  4. click the drop down menu at the top right where it says 'write a new post in...' and you will get a list of all the communities you have subscribed too and your blog.
  5. Choose the community you want to post too.
  6. Click publish
  7. to then publish it on your blog (as it will now only be published on the community page) simply resteem the post you've just published.

It's not that hard, and once you get used to it that's all you really need to know.

Those are very helpful instructions. Even I can follow them, I think :)

Isn't it wonderful? Reminds me of the coffee shop in Greenwich Village years ago where I used to have French fries with a classmate. Congenial, and chock full of people with interesting things to say.

It would be nice to just write, to get an idea and go with it, and to know there will be a home, a place for that piece. It feels less cold than posting outside of a community.
Thanks for taking the initiative.

You're most welcome. it's story writers like yourself that have kept the spirit of fiction alive on steem.

It's my fondest hope that The Ink Well becomes a place for sharing, and mutual support for the creative writers on steem leading by example to draw those who've left back.

I truly believe that the fictioneers (I love that made up word 😉) and poets bring so much unique and interesting creativity to the steem blockchain, and I want to help boost these 'niches' into a place of prominence again.

It's great to have you in the community @agmoore

Now that you have a home, like all other creative minds, all you need to do is have an idea, and let yourself write! I'm really glad you like the initiative!

I'm never out of ideas. Realizing them...that's another matter :) I'll be sure to support other members of the community.

I love this idea. And it's much needed! A place for all creative writers to go, especially we poets. (we? us? which is correct?)

THANK YOU.

Hi @owasco

Yeah, this community idea is something I've wanted to do for a long time... but I had to wait for Steemit.Inc to role out their communities features.

Lol, I've been waiting over a year... but The Ink Well is finally here 😂

A place for all creative writers to go, especially we poets. (we? us? which is correct?)

Lol, I'm not sure... off the top of my head I think both 'us poets' or 'we poets' are fine. Maybe we poets is a more inclusive use of the preposition.

Awesome to have you in the community 🙂👍

I’m intrigued and will resteem to take a closer look & hopefully, help in some small way to get word out.

I will admit that I don’t fully understand what communities are all about and am somewhat intimidated by Steemspeak —- hope I find time/energy to teach this ‘ole dog new tricks :)

Welcome Yahia

It's great to see that you made it my friend.

I will admit that I don’t fully understand what communities are all about and am somewhat intimidated by Steemspeak

I understand this sentiment, and I was the same with steempeak, but after a few days using it and acquainting myself about two weeks ago it's now all I use. It's also the most intuitive platform for interacting with communities.

I might write a guide for how to use communities for those who aren't hugely technically minded. the key would be to keep it super simple in a step by step format.

Anyway, thanks for checking out The Ink Well :)

Will be consulting your how-to notes in the comment section, when I’ve time & energy to post (& feel free to nudge me on Twitter if there a contest or something you’d like to notify me of).

Cheers & thanks for keeping love of literature alive, here 😊

Seems like an interesting project, hope to drop a few posts over there!

$trdo

Excellent @fenngen

It will be great to have you. I look forward to reading your poetry or fiction or both :)

Yo! You got a non beta link?

Hi m8. I'm still working all this out.

I can see your comment here on my blog, but not on the version in the community. Steemit doesn't seem to be working well at all right now so I've been using steempeak. Here is the steempeak link to this post:

I have a steempeak link that I think isn't beta. Did I share a beta link on twitter:

https://steempeak.com/hive-170798/@raj808/introducing-the-ink-well-a-curie-curated-creative-writing-community

And the steempeak link to the community:

https://steempeak.com/c/hive-170798/created

I will give it a bash through steempeak! The link in the post led me to the beta Steemit. Com and I got panicky about entering my keys lol. It is all still a bit ropey!

I've updated the post now with proper Steemit links.

Dohhhhh... I did a Homer.

Hehe, cool. It is quite confusing the whole malarkey!!

Haha, I'm in!! :0)

Awesome! :)

See ya down the well dude. Ermmm... that sounds wrong!

Lol. It does a bit!!!

I am so excited about this and really look forward to taking part and learning from some of the awesome writers on here xxxx

Cool, it will be great to have you and your poetry over at the Ink well :-)

This is wonderful! I've been waiting for a Fiction/Poetry community to spring up. :)

Hi @kaelci

Yeah, this community idea is something I've wanted to do for a long time... but I had to wait for Steemit.Inc to role out their communities features.

Lol, I've been waiting over a year... but The Ink Well is finally here 😂

Awesome to have you in the community 🙂👍

We are very excited, and happy to have our idea supported from the start! We would love to hear from you in our community! Welcome. :)

thanks for creating it, this is fantastic

This is something I've wanted to do for a long time... But had to wait for Steemit.Inc to role it their communities features. Lol, I've been waiting over a year, but The Ink Well is finally here 😂

Awesome to have you in the community @poemsofasickmind 🙂👍

Yes, I am glad to see this feature and steemit is prospering, i hope it has a bright future with all these good additions.
I added one of poems, hope everyone likes it.

Couldn't think of anyone better to do this. 500 SP delegated. I used to love the good contests here... looking forward to their return..

Wow, thanks so much for the delegation @riverflows. That is an amazing and very generous gift to the ink well community!

I used to love the good contests here... looking forward to their return.

Ha ha, I'll have to get my thinking cap on then and formulate something challenging yet fun for a poetry comp.

I'll let you know when it drops 😉👍

Thanks for the delegation, we hope this will be a place for all creatives and dreamers! And that our community will become a place of quality prose and poetry. :)Welcome.

I have subscribed and want to cross post something (not mine), but The Ink Well (great name BTW) is not showing up in my communities. Is there a lag, or is there something else I need to do?

Hi @owasco

Welcome to the community, so great to have you here :-)

The Ink Well should show up in your communities once you subscribe. I think that it is worth signing out and signing back in again if you're having issues. Sometimes that works.

This sounds such a great idea!!! Love the roots of inspiration!
Looking forward to being part! I got some new poems I’m recently working on. 😎

I got some new poems I’m recently working on. 😎

Awesome dude! Perfect material for The Ink Well! Also, if you want to post video poetry readings they're most welcome.

Glad to have you here my friend 🙂

Welcome. Bring your inspirations, and enjoy!

Finally an actual community for writers- like, there's bannanafish, but they're contest-only. It's not the same.

I'm excited. Hopefully you guys will still be around by the time I get out of my writer block, even so, great iniciative!

I hope we're gonna be going full power for a long time @airiam

I feel for you with the writers' block. I suffered 6 years of it soon after I finished university and it was bad. Creative expression through writing is such a big part of me that I never realized just how much it closed me off during that period.

Anyway, I'm sending creative vibes your way in the hopes they'll blow those writers' block blues away.

If you subscribe to The Ink Well we will be posting prompts and competitions at some point soon that might fire that inspiration up again.

Anyway, we're here whenever the block lifts and you get that urge to write poetry or fiction again 🙂👍

Outstanding! One more space for us creative nuts! Grateful for the initiative dear friend! Thank you for creating new spaces for us lovers of writing, verse and prose!

Thanks @manuelramos

Thank you for creating new spaces for us lovers of writing, verse and prose!

I'm just happy that so many people are enthusiastic and want to join in writing great poetry or stories. I look forward to reaing some of your creations in the future.

Thanks for joining us at The Ink Well community :)

With pleasure, my friend! I will try to enter this community.

Well, this is quite interesting. Thank you very much for letting us know about this new community on the PYPT Show.

No worries @sgt-dan

Thanks for checking out the ink well community. I had a good laugh chilling out and chatting with you all on the show.

If you're ever in the mood for checking out some poetry or a good short story you know where we are :)

Hey @raj808 sounds like a really great Initiative. Thanks for bringing it to light :)

Hey Robert

Nice to see that you found us :)

I am hoping that our community will develop into a place where writers can come to share stories and poems, but also where those who enjoy reading that type of content can browse and find something to whisk them away to lands of imagination.

Cheers for checking out The Ink Well :)

You get an upvote purely for "inktroduction" 👍🏼

Ha ha, thanks :)

There is nothing quite as good as a punishingly funny pun ;-)

This is super exciting, @raj808 and @stormlight24. I look forward to being a part of it!

And we're looking forward to reading your stories or poems. Welcome. :)

I join the celebration for this initiative. Cheers @raj808

Thank you Marcy :)

It is nice to see you here at The Ink Well, you're most welcome :)

What a wonderful initiative:) resteemed.

Hi @wandrnrose7

Thank you.

It's great to see you here. I hope you will bless us with some of your fantastic poetry :)

I'd love to read it here in The Ink Well.

Welcome.

That's amazing! As a fiction writer on Steemit I've been waiting for something exactly like this! Thank you for creating this place!

Hi @rakushasu

You are most welcome and I sincerely hope you'll drop some of your stories in at The Ink Well.

I took a look at your blog and website and I think you'll like some of the things we have planned for the coming months. There will be writing prompts and eventually competitions.

Also, I am a writer of Sci fi, fantasy and horror myself so expect some prompts around those genres in the near future ;-)

Thanks for checking us out :)

Oh that sounds great! I'm looking forward to it!

Erm, would there be a place for creative non-fiction, do you think?

Hi @shanibeer.

I think that as there is so many more general creative communities out there my vision was always to keep The Ink Well strictly fiction (but all types of genre fiction too) and poetry.

Let me discuss this with my partner and the MOD of the community who helped me set up The Ink Well before coming to a definitive descision.

Leave it with me!

I'll respond with a definite answer within a day or two :)

I was thinking of posting something later in the week (I can post it outside the Community) so you could see the sort of thing I'm talking about. They're mainly fragments at the moment.

Wonderful.

So, if I have an especially excellent piece of short fiction I wrote (say, for one of the anthologies that @steemfiction published on Amazon, but that has never been released in a standalone), I should post it in this community?

As long as it hasn't been online mate I have no problem with it whatsoever :)

I would have to have a conversation with my partner and fellow curator about this issue, but I honestly think that the deal breaker (for getting our community and curie vote) would be if it is online already. But even if it is online, you can still post it @improv and will probably get new readers and great feedback. It's just the rewards side of things where we have to follow our own rules.... or well.... it turns into chaos lol

Visit the community page and have a read of the description and rules. We're as flexable as we can be, and it's a friendly community.

My moto is zero drama. This is why we are strictly on chain, at least for now. My experience of discord communities is that drama is just around the corner lol

Yeah, I mean it's not online, except for sale on Amazon, so... what is online, anyways?

Just on a website m8. That's all I mean.

For example, just so you understand our process (it's also the way all curie curators have based their checks for many years) if I were to take a passage of the story, put it in google and it comes up as having been published on another website (the whole story, not just say an excerpt for promotional purposes) then I couldn't vote it with curie vote based on their own rules. Regardless of my opinions on it, they have gifted us with their community vote so I keep to their rules. There is an exception which is when I discover a story that has gone up on say a wordpress site and steem pretty much at the same time, and I can see a link in that blogger/writers wordpress with their steem account (thus showing ownership of the material and the steem account).

D'you see the process? It is all about trying to reward original material, eliminate plagiarism (we do have a load of other checks for that) - but I know you're not a plagiarist m8 - and try to encourage first publishing on the blockchain. However, these rules were constructed at a time when both crypto and steem were booming. At that time - around 2017/18 steemit was getting really good google first page rankings so the fight against spam, plagiarized material and trying to push the real good stuff to the higher payout was even more important.

I've gone on a rant, lol I have a tendency to do this sometimes. The origonal answer is all you need take into consideration. If it's been sold as a kindle version then it's not on a website, it's just on peoples kindles. Also, amazon paper copies sold aren't gonna influence me in not rewarding it as much as I can at The Ink Well. We want high quality writers and material.

I just won't be able to use curie vote if it's found on another website m8

Sounds grand, then!
