Throw it

in Photography Lovers10 months ago (edited)

The general rule of thumb with a hand grenade is to throw it away after the safety pin is pulled and the lever released - holding it in your hand won't end well at all. They explode you see and you'll not live to get a second chance at doing it right.

This is my hand grenade and before you say fucking fuckety fuckballs that dude has a hand grenade, you need to know that whilst it is an actual hand grenade, a real one, there is no fuse delay, detonator or explosive material inside it. You'll note there are a couple holes drilled into the body which render it useless as an actual hand grenade. Make no mistake about it though, it's real and it's heavy - if it hit you in the noggin it would hurt...it just won't explode.

This is a Mills Bomb, a cast-iron anti-personnel fragmentation hand grenade, developed by William Mills in 1915.

The early models were used in World War One, some seventy five million were supplied to England and her allies (Australia included) and subsequent versions were used all the way through to the early 1970's, this is one of the later versions, the 36M.

These could be thrown up to around 30 metres away so the thrower needed cover. It weighs just under a kilogram (1.68lbs or so) and has an explosive range of about 90 metres. That means, if one went off within 90 metres (295 feet) of you and you had no cover, you were pretty much fucked - this is why it's suggested to throw it far away rather than hold it in one's hand once the pin and safety lever is released. It just makes good sense.

u-fuckhead (3).jpg

I decided to take some shots, once again in low light similar to what I did in this post a few days ago, and I liked how it came out; the grooves in the cast-iron body created some shadowed areas which give it a sinister look. They're not there for that purpose though, those grooves allow the cast-iron body to fragment when the hand grenade explodes and that's what rips into human beings killing or rendering them combat-ineffective.

I've had this grenade cerakoted (ceramic paint baked on) so all the original paint markings have gone, but it still looks cool sitting in my home office with all the other curiosities and military paraphernalia I have about the place.

That's it for this post folks, although I'd like to invite you to comment if you feel inclined. Have you ever held a hand grenade, thrown one or even caught one and thrown it back like they do in the movies? Trust me, that's not advisable unless you're in a movie, these grenades had a seven second fuse, later revised to a four second fuse...catching one and throwing it back wasn't much of an option.

Feel free to make any comments you like, select your favourite image and let me know which it is or pretty much just say hello if you want, I'll respond either way.

I photographed every image in this post.
Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III was used to capture these images.

Sort:

Bloody hell, that is quite the range of the danger area. Not quite like in the movies where you can be fifteen feet away and be alright!

Little fragments of hot cast-iron ripping through one's flesh isn't conducive to a good day out right. Up to 90 metres man, it's a fair lethal zone right? Imagine it tossed into the room of a house, or back in WWI down into a trench system. Pretty unpleasant for those inside.

Yeah, it's fiendish for something so small. Very clever though, that reduction in the fuse timer makes for no messing!

Yeah, picking one up that's been thrown into the trench or foxhole wasn't much of an option. Falling on it to protect ones mates was though, it happened. That's selflessness and generosity right there.

Yeah, I've heard of that. The most selfless thing ever

A spur of the moment reaction rather than a conscious decision. Bravery unparalleled.

I have only seen grenades in movies. Or I have seen plastic toy key chains that imitate them.
I had no idea that the grenade's grooves had such a terrifying purpose... once again, it is a terrifying weapon.

But the pictures are so cool. I feel that the third one from the bottom especially shows the weight of the grenade well!

They are a fearsome weapon as most weapons are. Humans have great skill at deciding ways to kill and main one another and the hand grenade is one such thing.

Yes, that's a great shot I think, shows it off well. I think my favourite one is the second down from the top.

On a certain occasion, some motorized vehicles that were passing by the command where I worked and I was at the front door as a precaution, threw a grenade. Fortunately, I reacted in time and alerted the others, shouting, GRENADE!! And throwing myself in the direction that the grenade had fallen behind a saman tree that was a few meters from where I was, I came out unscathed from that attack but was stunned by the explosion for several minutes, the structure of the command still retains part of the damage caused by this explosive device

That's a lucky escape indeed. It's strange to imagine living in a place where an hand grenade may be thrown; in a war zone sure, it's expected, but not in everyday life right? You're very lucky you didn't catch a fragment and lived to go home to the family. I'm not surprised you were stunned, the overpressure can be quite fierce.

Here in Venezuela, crime is better endowed than many security agencies, this country apparently is not in a conventional war, but there are many organized crime groups that when a security agency confronts them they use their entire arsenal, including grenades and carry out attacks to police commandos, this is total madness, apart from that human rights is the biggest protective shield that this class of criminals have, because as soon as you discharge any of them, even if they have an extensive criminal record, they immediately open an investigation to the acting official

Yep, I figured as much. It can't be very nice to have to live in those conditions.

You know you've pissed me off, right? I have a Korea era practice grenade (M4?) but I can't find it. For 11 years it lived just to the left of where I'm sitting right now but I had to take the shelf unit down when I got Starlink. That's close to two years ago. I just must have put it someplace really safe. I've looked in all the usual places... There was also a jar full of bullets. Orphan calibers that I no longer own. I can't find them, either. I did find a holster and 2 chrome wheel center caps that were presumed lost.

It's been a minute. I'd like to apologize but I can't. I'm not sure why, but I've made some foundational changes and switched priorities. It's not like I found someplace better, I'm not really anyplace. It's not like I don't think of you and others from time to time, I do. I bought a pair of 5.11 ATAC boots on your recommendation. I really like them, thank you.

So. I just found the bullets, but the grenade isn't there. There are 3 linked 30.06 cases that would work in a BAR, but no grenade. Need a few .456 Casoul bullets? 30.40 Krag?

I miss your smiling face. Hell, I miss your unhappy face.

You know you've pissed me off, right?

Haha, well yeah I have that effect on some people...the legit ones tell me.

It's a bummer about the grenade as that would be coo, but at least you found the bullets...it's always a good day to find such things, unless one finds them inside of oneself; that day isn't so good.

So, you got those ATAC's Good work and I'm glad you like them, solid boots for sure and they'll see you right when in the desert with Sam. I wear them all over the place though, not just in the field. They make me feel...comfortable, if you know what I mean. They're familiar.

Don't worry about apologising, I know you've been away for a while and figured you were doing things that had to take priority, it happens and is totally acceptable. I appreciate your comment about missing me, my faces. Here's both you mentioned just to warm your heart and bring you joy. 😀😒

Need a few .456 Casoul bullets? 30.40 Krag?

Come now man, all ammunition is accepted, at all times. To do otherwise would offend the gods of war.

So. After years of careful study I finally found and owned a motorcycle with too much horsepower (180 hp Suzuki B King). Likewise I found that the .456 Casoul was just too much for a hand cannon. Damn that thing hit hard. There just was no second shot :) But it's kind of cool to have some elephant type pistol rounds...

I love my boots and boots in general. The 5.11s are a little like wearing slippers. I'll just guarantee that I'll never put my hiking boots on again. Really a good recommendation, my friend. So far I'd call it perfect.

I wear boots at least part of every day. These are my new riding boots, also. Another two pair of shoes I'll never wear again... I might get a pair of booties for wet weather, or I might just be a tough guy. I have a pair of 3 finger rain gloves that work well.

30.40 Krag was a WWI American rifle. I used one for deer hunting in my youth.

I have put the grenade on the "pick up when seen" list. I have actively checked every possibility that I can think of. I stowed it someplace special for sure...

Some calibres are overkill and as someone who has shit a lot I focus on the right tool for the job.

I knew a guy who had a need to have the largest most rediculous calibres he could find. (probably had a small dick). He was the worst shot though, couldn't hit shit. We called him Howie (to his face) as we always joked that even with a Howitzer he'd not impact the target.

I'm not saying it's not fun to shoot heavier calibres from time to time, but I've seen them be the reason someone can't shoot effectively and for me there's no reason to do it without the expectation of hitting the target and being able to follow up quickly if one doesn't.

I have fired a 30-40 Krag, only a few rounds. It's not common here, certainly not as common as the .303 SMLE. It's always nice to shoot something historic though.

Those boots man, I'm so pleased you like them. I love mine and wear them so much but I always worry people will buy things I suggest and then hate them.

Well, you don't use a screwdriver to drive a nail. I'm a serious believer in the right tool for the task.

With a pistol I seriously believe in the second shot. I want to be very close with the first shot but want the second to be 10 ring. With a rifle it's all first shot-fact of the matter is, when hunting deer or elk, there is no second shot. Get it right the first time.

With a shotgun it's a series of first shots. I've gotten a few doubles on ducks and I have seen a couple of triples.

I have a lady friend that is just nasty with a .22winmag pistol. I certainly wouldn't want to be caught creeping around her place. For me, the big calibers are giving the shooter 'miss room'. I had a .44 Mag in my young days. I got over that pretty early :)

I have always been comfortable in boots. The best of them have been custom built and I wore them all day every day. These boots are the closest I've had to the customs, and made for the desert. The right tool for the job, it seems.

You're right, that second shot, the double tap, is important with a handgun, especially the lighter calibres like 9mm. Being able to back up quickly and accurately is the key.

I'm not so good with a shotgun, not bad, just better in long guns and handguns. I'd still not advise standing in front of me if I had a shotgun and the intent to use it though. I can hit stuff.

I hope you're well and you have a good weekend ahead.

I may or may not have a hallway gun in my bedroom. Pistol grip short barrel 12 ga. Nobody will come down my hallway.

So all those hollywood war movies I watched as a kid, (couldn't get enough of them) and all those "commando" magazines I read religiously as well. Were all lies and made up?
Mein Gott in Himmel!

Haha, well yeah I guess most were. I'm not saying a tossed hand grenade can't be picked up and tossed back (or away) but with a four second fuse...Hmm, one would want to be fast.

As someone who has been a shooter and done other things around that and firearms, I'm the worst person to watch a movie with guns in it with. I pick on their grip, their style, the way they only seem to have three rounds in there (to create drama in the movie I guess) or they have thirty seven thousand rounds in a firearm I know only carries seventeen or whatever...I think I enjoy picking on them more than the movies themselves. Shooting an AK-47 sideways and not aiming...never going to work well unless missing is the aim of the game.

I don't know what commando magazines you read but they might have been legit...or not.

At least light sabres are more realistic.

These are the pictorial mags we read and swapped and read again. I didn't realise they could still be purchased!

I don't think I will bother, I have moved on to "other" periodicals these days

Oh yeah, now light sabres are totally legit...and I want one.

I remember watching a TV show as a little kid in the mid-70's called The Rat Patrol (1966-1968). Man I loved that show...I thought their jeep was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. Now, they were the type of blokes who'd pick up grenades and hurl them back.

I remember those mads you showed too, although never read any of them. But...now I want to watch The Rat Patrol.

enjoy!! I bet you can find it on you tube lol,

Woww what great pictures... awesome! You have a grenade!

No, I've never had one, never touched one, but it's fabulous... am I crazy to say that?

I loved the details you mention about it, because I knew very little about how they work. Even if it doesn't explode, it can still be used as a weapon, for example if someone threatens a cat. You can throw it at the head and it works....

Photographs 5 and 7 are the ones I liked the most.

How cool! you have a grenade! I love it!

Greetings Galenkp

Pretty cool right?

You can throw it at the head and it works...

Lol, yeah getting bonked in the noggin with one of these will hurt, so yep, especially good on people who mess with my cats!

I think photo two is my favourite but I like them all. I had fun shooting this.

Interesting the light in photo 2, where it focuses and the sense, not bad. All of them are great. You are very good at taking pictures. I often enlarge them to see details. I'm like that haha

In case you need it, the pomegranate serves as a stone hahaha.

Thank you, I appreciate the compliment.

We had a pomegranate tree/bush when I was growing up...I used to love them...haven't had one for a while now, but can certainly see how one may come in handy for knocking someone on the noggin.

In Argentina I had two pomegranate trees.... delicious but they are also used as weapons. 🤣

Weaponised pomegranates. 🤣

That is pretty awesome. I really like the style of this one. I used to have a M67 grenade, but I gave it to my nephew who is really into military stuff. It was missing the clip and pin, but everything else was there for the most part. It had a hole drilled in the bottom too. I actually found it laying on the ground outside one of the schools I worked at a long time ago. I talked to the other administrators to ask if they thought we should try and find out whose it was. They were like nope, you can have it, just get that thing out of here. Even though it was a dud, they still didn't like the optics of a grenade being on school grounds. So some veteran is probably missing his souvenir he brought home from the war...

Yeah, it's pretty cool. I've got a few things about the house that have some cool factor and this is one of my favourites.

A hand grenade (dud) at school. I wonder if a kid had brought it for show and tell and lost it. A good find for you although I feel for whomever lost it, especially if it was someone who served as things like this often come with a lot of meaning.

yeah, I totally agree with you there. This was back before social media too, so I couldn't really even post anything on there. I concur that it was probably something someone brought in for show and tell.

It's a nice photo of a war relic. From time to time living in Korea I am reminded that war has and can happen and it sucks.

Yea war happens, there's a few going in or right now in fact.

It is really interesting how heavy handgranades are! I held some from WW I and WW II and for some reason you assume they will be light, but they are super heavy! I have to say holding them gave me that panicky feeling of "ah need to get this out of my hands"

Hello @plint, I am happy to find you here.

I can tell that feeling, I do be terrified as well with just holding it. Different thoughts will definitely be going on in my head.

They really are quite weighty. Most people have the reaction you have had - it is a very destructive little thing indeed and feels quite menacing in the hand.

Excellent series of photos, mate, I love how you take care of every detail, especially in the last shot, that macro shot was amazing, wonderful work ❤

Thanks mate, I appreciate you saying so, I had some fun with these images.

I've seen a lot of such equipment in real life, mostly in museums, so the "no touchy touchy" rule has always held me back from actually getting an in hand feel. Yet, if we talk about the digital realm, in the world of videogames I've always been called the "top fragger", because my nades never miss. 😂

Maybe one day you'll get to experience with the real thing, world war three perhaps. Your video game skills won't help you though, it's not even close to the real thing.

it's not even close to the real thing.

I'm a fast learner though, WW3 or a zombie apocalypse, I'll be ready just in time. 😏💣

Hmm, you better hope it never happens. The reality is...well, there's no re-spawns in the real world.

Oh, I know that, it's one shot one kill over here too. No need to auto-fire a whole mag on one guy. 😂

The closest I have been to a grenade is from the TV set and I find it really dangerous because once the pin is pulled, everywhere goes boom.

I have seen in movies how soldiers pick it up and throw it, I always thought they were overdoing things but it looks like it's very possible since there is always a little time between pulling the pin and the explosion.

image.png

Assuming it was thrown and in the air for a couple seconds it would explode in your face before you had the chance to pick it up and throw it back...You might have missed this part of the posts about the four second fuse.

I would comment. But I already pulled and released.

Here I am again. Out of TIME.

Would not want to be the guy standing where that door is gonna smack em. If the hinges hold?

Haha...getting the throw wrong can be problematic. It'll generally only happen once in the field though.
