So Many Windows

Some of my favorite things to take pictures of on trips lately are doors and windows. They're often so different wherever you go and they always seem to have so much character, you can't help but appreciate them.

It's a bit strange to think that inanimate objects can have their own sort of personalities, but I really think that they do in some cases.

Today I'm going to focus on some of the windows that I've seen that do have a lot of character. I've been saving up these shots for a few weeks now, or months or even years in some cases.

I have quite the collection on my hands at this point...

certainly enough to make a proper post out of them. So here goes...

Shutters are a favorite of mine. They in themselves make a window very interesting and really add a lot to their overall look and design. Especially the slightly less common double shutters above.

Brightly colored shutters that contrast nicely with the paint of the buildings facade are also a favorite of mine. So many options and so many colors!

I like seeing long panels of windows as well. I think it's the clean lines and organization of it.

Some windows have a sort of charm to them...

whereas others are more gungey (below). I tend to like both though, for different reasons.

Balconies are another cool accent for windows.

As I'm writing this I'm realizing that a lot of these photos were taken in Nice France. Nice had a lot of interesting looking windows and it really inspired me to take more photos of them on our trips. Since then I've taken many more shots of them than I had in the past.

I saw these ones (above) around the time the pandemic, in 2020 I believe, when travel was just starting to open up again in Europe.

If windows could be considered cute than these little windows on the roof (above) would definitely fit that description.

Different countries tend to have different styles of buildings, which in turn means that they have much different styles of windows. For instance the ones you see on the common eight story buildings in France look much different than the ones on the tall skyscrapers that you see in the Netherlands.

What happens when you have to replace one of the windows above? Strange shaped windows must be hard to find years after a building has been built and they must cost an absolute fortune. I wouldn't want to have to replace the semi-circle ones above.

I liked these 70's looking windows that were seen on a hotel in Monaco. They look to be tinted blue, which is pretty unique in my opinion.

You may not have any deep thoughts on windows but feel free to let me know which are your favorite in the comments, or share any photos of cool ones that you've seen in your travels. You could also create your own post on windows or doors and share the link for me to check out later.

well thats it for now. Until next time, thanks for stopping by.

Sort:

I do really like the windows with the wooden blin shutters on them. They do paint them quite vividly at times and they always stand out

Yeah I like the bright colors.
In Canada we don't have shutters at all, just small ornamental ones that have no real function other than asthetics, on older homes generally. I think that is why I like them so much. They are still a novelty to me.

Same here, the first time I was in Europe I saw them and was like, wow, we should have these!

Yeah exactly haha. I want to buy some and bring them home with me when I go back. They would probably cost a fortune though and would be impossible to install I bet. They are heavy things and I notice that the outer walls on homes are often much thicker in Europe. I'm sure that the shutters require some sort of fortification to withstand the weight so I doubt you can just attach them to any old home. Would be nice though. I bet they save a lot of energy by keeping the house cooler in the summer by blocking the sun and warmer in the winter by holding the heat in.

Get some cheap replica lightweight wooden ones made, or steal them from a cupboard and give them a lick of pain. I just actually noticed that the doors in my attic that lead into the eaves are essentially those shutters but with little door handles on them.

Not a bad idea haha. 😂

These are some amazing shots. I adore windows too, and doors actually. I started a collection of doors around Leicester and I've been meaning to continue.
What device do you use? phone of the camera?
With my camera, sometimes it's a challenge changing lens to capture everything. I need to have my camera repaired though. The battery compartment is broken...my friend will see what he can do to repair it with 3D printing

Nice! Yeah I try to take a few (or many) shots wherever we go now.

I just use my samsung phone for photos and edit them on Google photos and snapseed. My phone takes pretty good pictures if the weather conditions are decent. I've never had a proper camera.

Samsung takes pretty decent images it seems. I haven't had that brand in ages. My camera phone is broken and only takes selfies, which is no use to me.

It's a common problem with the brand Vivo, as I've seen from complaints. I bought it in the Philippines.
I'm not big on technology so I hate having to buy new gadgets. I will have to eventually.

Yeah unfortunately the selfie cameras tend to be less powerful than the main camera on the back as well. Its too bad it wasn't the reverse in your case - unless you take a lot of selfies? I never use my front camera because it doesn't take good photos at all.

No, I don't take selfies!! I haven't figured the art of it yet. I guess I'd need a masterclass from Kim Kardashian. BTW, I saw her standing close to another man recently. That's when I discovered that she's no longer with Kanye😲.

Haha yeah I think I learned that recently as well. I don't follow that stuff generally but still always seem to obtain the info by osmosis I guess lol

Haha!
Yeah! Well said!
lol

We'd never be able to keep up with their "rate of turnover"...haha!!

I also like to give things personality. And not just to material things but to concepts too, hahaha, but that aside. The windows and doors indeed seem that have character, I like them too.

Especially the old ones.

Yeah, I really like old and run down looking doors and windows. I have a bunch of those that I'm saving up for another day.

Cool that you still have some more windows :)
Senior version haha

I also forget to say in my previous comment that windows the eyes of the houses for me.
And old houses + old windows are like elderly people we should respect and see beauty in it.

Yeah I have more but I'll wait until I collect 20 or so before I post them. It will take a bit of time.

Yes very true. They are likes eyes indeed. They say that eyes are the gateway to the soul. I suppose windows are a gateway to the house, in a way. hahaha 😆

I suppose windows are a gateway to the house, in a way. hahaha 😆

for thieves maybe 😅

Or for me.

Once I went out of the apartment without the keys ( and I can not open the door without the keys from outside as there is no handle) So I climbed on the window and literally fall into the room. I had a memory of that event for a couple of months on my legs, a nasty internal bruise that didn't want to go away so easily. 😂

for thieves maybe 😅

Haha yeah, exactly.

That story is hilarious. Not that you were hurt, but the situation lol.

I have definitely climbed into a window before. I locked myself out in high-school once (or multiple times), and I would take the glass panes out of the small basement window and climbed through. It was a 7 foot drop but if you go in feet first it's okay. You just get some scratches - no internal bruises or anything. Lol

So you were adventurous too :))
Just that it happened to you when you were in high school, and to me a few years ago 😁
Maybe I grow slowly, or backwards, so just reached my teenage days 🤣🤣🤣

That's a good topic! I would keep all windows free from curtains for more light. Especially with the tall ceilings, I imagine in these buildings.

Yeah I wonder if they would have curtains with also having the shutters? Most people shut the shutters at night so curtains may not be necessary. I don't know though.

Yeah, that's an interesting one. I would imagine they do because of the romanticism and charm it adds to the room. Also easier to close the curtains, no?

Yeah they definitely make the inside of a place look nicer. It's ways easier to close curtains for sure. I don't think people mind closing shutters at night though. We are the only ones on our street to leave our shutters open each night haha. Everyone else locks their homes up like the country mint. Lol

Wow!!! So old habits do die hard lol

doors, windows and in my eyes, staircases make great shots.

I never thought of staircases but yeah, there are some cool ones out there, especially in old hotels. I'll have to remember to keep my eye out for them. I like old arial antennas on roofs, satellite dishes (for some reason) and construction cranes as well. They can make for some interesting shots also.

cant disagree with all that @leaky20

Wow!.. You've got quite the collection!

The pictures made me appreciate windows even more. They kinda add their own beauty to the buildings as well

Yeah, some windows are very beautiful. Doors as well. Eventually I'll do a similar post on them.

That's good.. I'm looking forward to more shots🤗🤗
