Magical Madeira: picturesque traditional houses in Santana

in Photography Lovers7 months ago

Hey there my Hive friends and followers!

Almost 3 weeks since the last episode of my Magical Madeira photography series, way too longer than I would wish but it is what it is. Today, however, I´m happy to finally roll out a new, freshly minted post about this fascinating Portuguese island.

I have already provided with you with some brief introduction into the landscapes and seascapes of the island and today, we will take a closer look at what probably is the most iconic and photographed architecture of the island - the famous Santana houses.

Known as "casas tipicas" in the local language, these picturesque little houses have been traditionally built and used on Madeira for centuries, according to some sources even since the very times when the island was discovered, which was in 1419.

Used mostly by the rural people and peasants, the houses were traditionally made from materials that were locally abundant - mostly wood and thatches. The roof was designed with such an unusually sharp angle for purpose - it drained down the rainwater, keeping the interior of the house dry and safe.

These lovely huts are sometimes known as "Santana houses" because Santana, a little coastal town located in the northern part of the island, is where most of these houses are still found even today but in the past, this type of houses was common all over the island. Let me now show you some pictures of these iconic pieces of Madeiran architecture that I captured in Santana.

Adorable, right? I know. But here comes the bummer. I had no idea when I was there, clicking these shots but later on, when I was doing my research on this topic, I figured out that some (maybe even most) of these houses found in Santana are actually fakes. Or imitations if you will. I visited a bunch of these houses and even if I had known though, I would´t have probably been able to tell which were real and which were fakes. They all look very authentic but I guess that those that are open to public (there are actually little souvenir shops in some of them) are the fake ones while the locked ones are the originals that are still used by the local farmers. But yeah, it´s a bit confusing and I must admit that it also makes Santana kind of a tourist trap (quite literally) but on the other hand, just the fact that this type of houses, built centuries ago, is still to be found and used somewhere on Madeira is fascinating and makes visit of Santana worth it as it gives you an opportunity to check out these iconic pieces of architecture from up close.

As you have probably noticed in the pictures, the surrounding of the houses is beautiful as well with various flowers blooming all over the place, especially the blue hydrangeas, one of the natural symbols of Madeira. The colorful background only makes the whole place look even more like something from a fairytale and even though that not everything is as genuine as it may seem, it´s still a part of the island that visitors shouldn´t miss out on ;)

By the way, I tried really hard to take photos of the houses without strangers in them but for reasons mentioned in my previous posts, we visited Madeira in the very peak of the European holiday season and all the touristy spots on the island (including this one) were super crowded so most of those shots have some unsuspecting photobombers in them, sorry about that :/

I hope that you learned something new about architecture and culture of Madeira thanks to this post and I will see you guys in the next episode of my little photography series about this extraordinary island ;)

I was looking forward to your next post from Madeira, and was wondering when it would appear.
And look, you came up with an amazing post, the pictures are very beautiful, I knew about these traditional houses, I had seen them before in some vlogs.
The pictures made me feel like I was there, thank you for that.

Thanks buddy! Yeah, if you saw some vlogs about Madeira, these houses were probably featured there too, they are very famous. I hope you will make it to this amazing island one day too so that you can see all of its beauties yourself :) Cheers!

Yes, I hope that one day I can follow in your footsteps and see this wonderful country through my eyes.

what a bright and cool house! They are VERY popular in my place now, here they are called A-houses, and people often build them for renting. We visited one of them last year as well, I was in love at once!

it was so comfortable inside especially the second floor with such a roof;)

Now I know where this idea has come from...;)

Wow! That looks amazing :) Simple but fun and very cozy. Thanks for sharing these pictures with us, I didn´t know :) Where exactly can these houses be found?

How impressive and beautiful architecture those typical Madeira houses have!... I don't remember having seen them before, thank you very much for sharing this excellent article accompanied by those magical photos... And what a lovely climate they had there that moment apparently!.. The most fascinating thing about this was looking at that wonderful roof made of plant materials!

I understand from what you wrote that these are reconstructions to show to tourists and I assumed that because of how new and pristine they look. However, the interesting thing about all this is the architecture of those houses, I imagine that it is a design to minimize the impacts of the climate and provide comfort to its inhabitants...

Regards a nd hugs @phortun friend!

Thank you very much for your kind feedback, support and curation my friend! Well, I think that the original houses look just as beautiful but they probably are not open to public. You can see that some houses are locked. These are probably the original ones and their owners just don´t want the tourists to hang around their homes :) The roofs are interesting indeed. It actually rains very often on Madeira so I cannot really imagine how the straw roofs can protect the interior from the water but it obviously works, somehow :D

I was thinking how well kept the houses are when I saw them, particularly the paint looked so fresh and neatly painted... The second house looks different from the others, do you think that might be an original? Or maybe an older fake one?

Well spotted! I´m pretty sure the house in the second picture is one of the original ones. My theory is that the locked houses that are close to public are the originals and are still owned and used by the locals. Those open to public are probably the fakes, built only to show the tourists what the houses look like. But I may be wrong :) Btw thanks for including my post in the honorable mentions yesterday! Much appreciated :)

Wohooo! Thank you Pauline! :)

I was there when I was 7 years old!, the interior of the Santana houses give you a very strange feeling because of how small it is haha, it is a very cool and nice place to visit, that place has very good vibes, I am half Portuguese; Madeira specifically; and as a child I visited those places with my family often

Thank you for sharing your visit with us!

Good luck!

You come from Madeira? Wow! So that´s some very unique and valuable feedback from you that we got here, thank you for that! Maybe you can explain the thing that confused me and some of the readers here too: which of those Santana houses are original and which are fakes? :)

Yes I am! Right now it is more difficult than ever to know which are the real ones haha, I remember them being a little old and with the paint somewhat worn but clearly they have been renovated over the years since it is a place very visited by tourists.

I see :) So obviously, now, even locals like you have troubles telling which ones are originals and which are fakes :D Maybe just the owners know :D But I guess the locked ones are original and they are locked because the owners don´t want the tourists to gatecrash their homes :D

These kinds of houses reminded me of some local beach resorts in the Philippines being built as an accommodation. Now, I know where they got the inspiration. Indeed, a traditional house in Madeira. Awesome.

Oh really? That´s interesting :) Thanks for sharing this info with us, I would love to see the Filipino version of these traditional houses :)

Wow, we could barely tell which one is real and which is fake, but the sum of all is that the view is very relaxing and calming.

Thank you! I agree, all those houses look identical(ly beautiful) and it probably is just the fact whether they are open to public or not what makes the difference between the original ones and the fake ones :)

Yeah and what's more important is that they gave attraction to tourists local or international. They still can make a profit and preserve the originals.

Exactly :) Win win...

Lovely photos of the Santana houses. Do not feel bad about the fakes. Honestly it is the smart thing to do. The fakes are built like the real ones. The authentic ones are still lived in and if I owned one - I wouldn't like tourists walking around and through it all the time.
I am happy that you shared the photos - I did not see the houses on my visit. I had a very relaxing trip with my then 14 months old and another on the way. Your photos reminds me of the island's beauty and make me want to revisit. Thank you.

Thank you for this nice comment my friend! You are right, if I owned one of these houses, I wouldn´t be excited about the curious tourists either. It was a good idea to build a few replicas that the tourists can check out even from the inside :)

It was a pleasure to bring back some nice Madeira memories for you. On your next visit to the island, you will check out Santana too ;)

How cute! I haven't seen them before, what will they look like on the inside? I would have liked to see hehe

Well, only some of those houses were open to public (I guess the fake ones :D) and it looked pretty cool in there too. Felt a bit confined but interesting, designed in traditional fashion. But I can understand why the authorities built the fakes for the tourists. I can imagine the locals who still use these houses or even live in them wouldn´t be excited about curious tourists peeping into their homes :D

Oh, cool! And you're right, I guess they recreated some of them so that tourists can see them without disturbing hahaha

Hi, this pics are beautiful. I love it this colors!

Thank you! :)

Why is Madeira so beautiful?
The place looks so good and amazing
I love it!

Why is Madeira so beautiful, that´s a good question :D Thanks for swinging by.

Wow the buildings are so spectacular and they could pass as a dolls house and over here, Santana is a type of flour made out of cassava.

Nice shots dear friend!

Thatched doll house, that sounds funny, but yeah, I can see some resemblance too :) Interesting like we all have our own associations. When I hear the word "Santana", my first thought is Carlos Santana, the musician :)

When I was a camp counselor we used to have to stay in A Frame cabins like this. They weren't nearly as cute though.

You are right, cabins of this shape are common at summer camps. Both in the US (I actually worked at one in Maine) and here in my country too. Cool observation. Thanks for stopping by! :)

Působilo to dost "uměle" a to nemám nic proti replikám :-)

Zkoušel jsi to někdy? :)

Dostanu se akorát na polské hranice a tomu jakž takž rozumím :-).
To není otázka jazyka. V podstatě si to musíš "přeložit" ať už jsi u nás nebo kdekoliv jinde. A věř tomu, že adekvátní slova se hledají dost těžko.

Oh my god! Stunning pictures. I only know Madeira because Ronaldo was born there too.

Haha, just like many other football fans around the world only know this island because of CR7 :) Yeah, he is like the ultimate celebrity on the island and if you just whisper the word "Messi" you can get in serious troubles :D I visited his museum, will post about it later ;) Thanks for stopping by!

These houses are really cute and adorable. I love the colors of red, blue and white which perfectly match with the brown roofing. And that photo with the hydrangea is awesome!

Thanks! Glad to know that you enjoyed this little tour around the Santana houses :) The locals love flowers and they have them everywhere. Especially hydrangeas and strelitzias :)

These beautiful photos show a place that could only be found in fairy tales, but actually exists. Thank you for sharing these photos with us

That´s right, these fairy tale houses are real and people still use them :) Thanks for checking out the pictures!

Beautiful clicks, really appreciated.

Glad that you liked them!

These look really beautiful and quite realistic too. I wouldn't even guess myself if I saw them. It must be such an exhilarating experience seeing them yourself. Santana is truly a beautiful place.🌺

Thanks for your feedback, I´m glad that you enjoyed this little tour around the famous Santana houses :)

Amazing view amazing photography really appreciateable I like it so much♥️💚💚

Thanks for checking them out, I appreciate it.

exploration of Santana houses in Madeira is enchanting. The blend of authenticity and imitation is intriguing. The vibrant surroundings add to the fairytale charm. Well-captured

Thank you very much for these kinds words, I appreciate it :)

The "Santana houses" look so cool @phortun
I think because of the weather condition in the island, people built those houses to limit the damage. Anyway, they are so beautiful, I like the way people make the roof.

What do you mean to limit the damage? The weather on Madeira is pretty much stable all year round, the temperature ranges just between 20 and 30 degrees and it rains often in all seasons. But anyway, I´m glad to know that you enjoyed the post, thanks for your visit :)

There’s beauty in its simplicity. Would love to see the interiors of actual homes. I wish they offer stays in airbnb; even at least for the non authentic ones.

That´s a good idea actually, I´m sure people would love to stay in these adorable little huts for a few nights just to try what it feels like :) Like living in a fairy tale :)

exactly, I;'d pay for the experience.

Wow! What a lovely house it is! I didn't expect such houses in Europe. The roof looks like from Africa, and the rest from Mediterranean.

Thanks for sharing them with us and letting us know their existence ;)

Hehe, you are right, it does look like some architectural mix :) Cute little houses indeed, it would be cool to live in such a house for a while :)

Yea, after retirement :)

These houses are really very beautiful, in this way every place has its own tradition and it looks really good. There may be houses with this kind of decoration in Pakistan too, but till now I have not seen them. So the simple maps are commonly used.

Thanks for your feedback man, I didn´t know that similar houses can be found in Pakistan too, that´s interesting :)
