I just got home from a nice weekend up North with my dad.
Today we had a family get together with his side of the family.
It's a side I don't see often or have not seen at all in some cases.
Mostly my dad's aunts, uncles and cousins.
The party was on a boat they rented.
It was a lot of fun.
When I think about it I don't see my own cousins that often.
So meeting my dad's version of those is pretty rare I guess (or maybe it's a Dutch thing) but meeting their children even more rare! (I had never seen them before).
Luckily I have improved my social skills over the years.
I can strike a conversation much more easily than when I was younger.
I ended up mostly talked with the children of my dad's cousins.
(I could not calculate what that made me in the family...maybe a second cousin?)
They were close to my age (28) and grew up in a village up north.
It was fun hearing their stories growing up in a small village.
The nice thing about the people up North is that they are in general more open and friendlier towards people they don't know.
Everything I go there I just feel calmer.
Like they are less stressed about things in general.
It's nice.
The boat ride was nice too.
In total the boat ride lasted 5 hours!
Which was pretty long in my opinion :)
But I did learn about a whole side of the family I didn't know excited.
Which was cool.
And who knows when I will see them again!

Great idea all at some time we should follow this example, because many of the families meet in December, to celebrate Christmas and in the most painful events the wake of a family, there are gathered even those who do not know. The occupations of daily life take us away from this beautiful relationship that is to share with our families, there is always an excuse or a promise that we are going next month and so the time goes by until the end of the year and when we meet. Thanks for sharing.

Only Dutch. I used to be pretty quiet too. I'm glad that changed.
Always is the best thing someone could ever had, I love family get together most especially when you have seen each other for so long, the love is always there, nothing else could quantify that love. Cool exploring with family.
It sounds strange to you, dear @exyle, I have relatives and cousins that I do not know, even living in the same city, but that is because everyone has their own occupations and they watch their things, and you will be surprised, we only see each other when a relative leaves this land, it is when someone dies, it is the only way, and it is sad because the family is very big.
In your case, it's good that even if you do not know your uncle's children, it's good to know that they meet on fun occasions and in a good family exchange, and more on the boat, how good that is. Happy day dear @exyle.

Family gatherings are always nice.May be it's rear in your part of the world,but in our culture it's not like that.When we celebrate we call all of our relatives.Even in any function like birthday,marriage party we invite all of our family member.I can see you enjoyed that a lot.You also meet with some of your relatives who are new to you.That was nice.People from quite place they are mentally in peaceful condition every where in the world.Happy family time and wish you this kinds of family time more in your life.
I’m pretty sure they are not invested in crypto at this time. Anyway, it’s always relaxing to meet family members and have fun. I met with my close family as well today and completely forgot about bloodbath that’s going on at this time. We should do it more often to survive these downturns without causing any damage by making mistakes.

In the end it was a nice distraction indeed and fun too.
Cultures varies in different places.It's the same thing happened with my nephew who lives in Europe,who doesnt know anything about their ralatives.Even his own cousin,he have seen her 3x only in 20 years while infact they live in one place. Filipinos are fun of family reunion.Its like fiesta everytime theres a family gathering and that happened 2 or 3x a year.
Its good to hear that you had this kind of family reunion. It will strengthen the ties between families.

Great photos, the views from the boat look fantastic. I am glad you got to meet your extended family, most times in this day and age we are so busy with daily life we tend to get isolated. Such opportunities are good just to meet and talk as a family,they sound like good people to be around too (open and friendly). Keep in touch with them and hopefully you form life long companionship :)

Really it's a great fillings! After a long time you meet your cousin and their children that you never meet them before. It was also exciting that you meet all together dad, aunt, uncle, cousin and specially the party was on board that was really full of fun. Very nice to see your excitement with family and most of the time you are giving your valuable time for family thats great.
Must have been a good time. Back in my country we don't have to worry too much about relatives...cousins and all those.
We just about live in the same locality, or at worst, same region. And we have several social gatherings every now and again which bring us together.
The only time you think you have taken long without meeting some one is if he or she is t Boarding school, or working somewhere in the city. Even then, its often a matter of months.
Having a house filled with family members is a nice one. They first time I got to meet a whole lot of my family members for the first time was when my elder sister got married to her beau last April and that made them all return home to witness the celebration.
I've never been on a boat before and I'll love to soon!
Hi exyle. I suppose being trapped on a boat for 5 hours with family you don't know that well was a good thing. Not saying you would have disappeared but you were kind of a prisoner.

I'm with you @cryptoandcoffee....I prolly would have been the odd person out...as five hours on a boat with strangers sounds like a great time to toss the fishing line for a catch or two...lol...

Glad it was pleasant, the boat looks nice and what was the water..a river or canal? Because I've never seen residential houses with backyards which go into water..but then I've never been to your country.
You can see a lot in 5 hours! There were these houses but also lakes and other beautiful nature.
When I was much younger this would probably be the ultimate nightmare for me but nowadays I'm much better.
in other words nowadays you're a much more experienced BS er and can talk to anyone? lol
People think I am nuts when I dont know all the people from both sides of the family and literary some people I swear I have never seen before glad I am not the only one @exyle but I have to say the idea of being on a boat sounds awesome, looks comfy and pretty big.
It is always awkward but a great feeling to meet a relative for the first time. You wonder what to tell them, they wonder what to say but somehow you are nice to each other and strike up a conversation. I liked reading your post.

Looks like you had a great time. Pretty funny, I took a trip this weekend to the town where my wife's parents grew up. It was a really good time visiting with their close relatives and hanging out. I hope to write a post about it. Always cool to meet those family members that you never get to see!
