Hong Kong seems to be following China’s footsteps in banning ivory!

in #nature7 years ago (edited)

At the beginning of 2018, China officially banned the ivory trade within their country, and animal lovers and conservationists all over the world celebrated this big win! The elephant in the room was that Hong Kong still has a legal ivory trade, and this lead to many people believing that the trade would still keep going since people from China could potentially just travel to Hong Kong to get their ivory, then bring it back to the mainland. A huge amount of the ivory that have been sold in Hong Kong is to buyers that live in mainland China, so it’s obvious that this happened despite ivory being illegal to buy in mainland China.

It now seems like Hong Kong is intent on following the footsteps of China and banning all ivory trade. The Hong Kong lawmakers held a vote on January 31st 2018, and the results was that they plan to end all ivory trade by 2021. The bill is known as the Endangered Species of Animals and Plants (Amendment) Bill 2017, or just the Hong Kong Ivory Ban Bill for short, and it does more than only just ban ivory; it also increases the penalties for wildlife crime in general, which will help scare away people from buying ivory and other illegal wildlife products.

Hong Kong has traditionally been known as the world’s largest ivory market. After CITES banned all international trade of ivory in 1989, Hong Kong (and previously mainland China) kept a national trade on the ivory that was already in the country. While this seem okay, many people and groups believe that a lot of ivory is illegally smuggled into the country, where it then is sold legally. Keep in mind that while I use the word believe, it’s pretty much confirmed that Hong Kong and China has been smuggling in lots of ivory from elephants that have been poached in Africa; it’s not like there is a huge ivory production in these countries by itself!

Once the bill passes into law, trading of this “legal” ivory will be made illegal, and hopefully this will decrease the demand and supply for ivory.

The road to banning ivory in China and Hong Kong has not been an easy one, and conservation groups have been fighting for this for several decades. China has seemed very uncooperative for a long time until things finally changed completely a few years back, and after this, the ban did not take too long.

Will this help the elephants directly?

The question when news like this spreads is always if it will help. Some people believe that the demand for ivory will be just as big as before, while others are more optimistic and believes that the demand will be reduced. There are currently 30,000 illegally killed elephants every year, so I really do hope that this will quell some of the demand for ivory, but I guess no one can know for sure until the ban is in effect.

While it might not reduce the demand at first, I hope that it at least sends a strong message towards the buyers that this is not something people want! This will hopefully lead to a cultural change over time, where the next generation might not want to buy ivory to the same extent at the current generation.

Hei @Valth
Er det 30.000 elefanter som blir skutt hvert år? Det var helt sinnsykt masse.
Trodde nesten det ikke fantes så mange i det store og det hele jeg.
Da lærte jeg noe nytt i dag :)

Mvh
@Gyldenhorn

Hei @gyldenhorn.

That's excellent news. Thailand has also been clamping down hard in the last few years. The airports are very keen about checking. Of course, a lot of this came about because traders here were passing African ivory off as Thai ivory (so very Thailand) and hence the govt. got involved.
Of course, we now just have the tiger temple to ban again and all the cruel animal shows and elephant rides etc etc etc....seeing the elephants in parks and tourist areas chained up waiting to give rides and doing the one fot to another foot rocking they do when bored is tragic.
At least we dont see the mhoots with their elephants roaming the streets at night begging anymore which is some progress I guess.
Really need the Chinese in Hong Kong to lead the way in this. Half the conservation problems in the world is due to chinese demand.

traders here were passing African ivory off as Thai ivory (so very Thailand)

That's pretty much what happened in China and Hong Kong as well, but even more obvious that it is untrue, since the supply of ivory here is a lot lower.

But it's good to hear that Thailand is also cracking down on the ivory trade! I agree that China needs to step up and set an example here; they are really the ones responsible for most of the illegal wildlife products in the world.

Thank you @valth for sharing the info
this is really Good news that they are banning the ivory trade ...... I think this should be ban in all over the world
And people’s are killing elephants 30k per year thats a large number!!!! If this continues they will kill all elephants from earth oneday

I think this should be ban in all over the world

It is banned in most parts of the world already, China and Hong Kong are probably the last big countries to ban them.

And people’s are killing elephants 30k per year thats a large number!!!! If this continues they will kill all elephants from earth oneday

Yeah, that's the problem. We need to stop killing the elephants very soon, or they will be gone forever!

well i think its a good news for animals lovers ..

Yeah, I agree :)

This is actually really great news.I sincerely hope that stuff like that won't happen as much as they used to happen since its really cruel. We should try to find a way to permanently stop doing that. Killing the elephants is just sad.

Thank you for contributing to the Steemit Community.Keep up the great work and I'm looking forward to your next posts.

I agree, but it's really difficult to stop all poaching of elephants, since the price for ivory is extremely high.

Thanks for commenting, @castbound! And thanks for the nice words :)

Yeah, well people want to make money even though that is a really bad way of doing it. So many cruel things are happening...

Yep, it's very sad that there are so many things where people make money on behalf of nature.

I think it will have effect on the no of elephants killed for Ivory, after the law is enforced...But it will be slow, lets say 10 years to see actual noteworthy results of the ban.
But I also fear, the ban will increase the prize of ivory in black market, giving the hunters more reason to kill...Situation at the source(Africa) should must be tightly controlled..

I think it will have effect on the no of elephants killed for Ivory, after the law is enforced...But it will be slow, lets say 10 years to see actual noteworthy results of the ban.

Yeah, I agree that it will most likely take some time. But I hope this changes the attitude towards ivory so that people don't really want to buy it anymore.

THis would be a great step if taken. killing animals for such purposes is heart wrenching..i hope now treating animals with care becomes the next trend.

Hehe, I agree with you on that, @mariahbill :)

I'm so VERY happy! This is PHENOMENAL news! I absolutely love Humans and Animals! It is so sad what people do for $! How would they like it if their nose was ripped off! All the best! Positive Energy! Great Karma! Your Friend @extraterrestrial :)

Thank you for the comment, @extraterrestrial. And I agree completely; this is great news!

You seem like a very kind hearted person and an animal lover like me..In pakistan, people treat animals so harshly I wish I could do something to change that.

Ouch, that's not nice to hear. It can feel difficult for a single person to feel like you got the means to do something about it, but someone's got to do it ;)

that's would be great to ban killing of elephants for Ivory but the price of ivory will become high in market if they ban killing of elephants @valth

Poaching elephants have always been illegal, @hidayat4u, so this will not change that.

You are kind person to take care of animals, thank you for that. Elephants are one of the smartest animals, and they should be protected.

Yeah, I agree. They are really smart, and it sucks that over 30,000 is getting killed each year just for their ivory!

Dear @valth ya .. so many appeals are sold illegally .. i agree with you with the fact of dismissal of this ivory purchase process.karna will arise a lot of positive impact for nature and elephant is not threatened ekstah.terimakasih with vlog this karna very helpful to open a sense of concern for our nature. permission to share vlog!!

Thanks for the comment, @noviwulandari :)

You are welcome @valth

This bill seems like it might be a big win for elephant conservation, but I can't help but to reflect back on 1920 during the prohibition. The intent of the program was to reduce the crime rate by banning alcohol, but the result was the opposite. Since alcohal was illegal to sell, it raised it's price on the black market and made people do sketchy things to get it into the hands of the buyers. In that particular case, by making it illegal, it really only raised the interest of it by money-seekers who were willing to do whatever it took to make the sale.

The optimist in me really hopes that this will discourage people more than draw them in since elephant pouching is a lot more difficult than back yard brewing. A separate part of me, however screams that there needs to be additional precautions in place to really stop the desire of Ivory. Unfortunately, as long as it has utility, people will always seek it out, but if somehow a suitable replacement can take it's place that doesn't involve killing animals, the problem may persist.

Honestly, if they found a way to devalue Ivory, that might be all it takes. Perhaps if on a legal trade market lowered it's cost, it would cause people to resell it for higher, but without needing another source for that exchange... Like double spending for it. I'm not sure. I guess we'll see in 2021 what happens. Thank you for the post, I learned a little today.

Social practices that support the obtuse treatment of creatures, that disappoint the earth and lower the good and moral remaining of human civic establishments must end, regardless of how antiquated or 'adored' such practices are viewed as," Alles said. "China and Hong Kong have moved the correct way, talking and administering to impact the boycott of business ivory; still, a lot of work stays to be done over the span of changing hearts and psyches and strategy.

Wow indeed.

wawoow thats something new and wonderful i really like liked your reasearch on it thnanks for sharing with steemit family and with me too!

You're welcome. I'm glad you liked it :)

Nice

Yes, it is very nice.

Nice to see a step in the right direction @valth i wonder especially in regards of chinese medicine what they will use to replace it, or do you know if this will be an excemption to the ban?

China still has a long way to go before it could be considered animal friendly in any sense. Whilst I am happy to hear and hope this is another step in the right direction, having been in some of trh apothecaries in Hong Kong I am amazed what they have in some of those jars, poised to have some form of medicinal benefits.

Really an informative post. Indeed excellence is never an accident, it is the result of intelligent and contineous hard work. Your hard work directly reflets in your posts. Thumbs 👍up to you @valth

Thank you for the kind words :)

Hopefully this puts a dent in the market. China, and southeast Asia in general, tends to be a pain for environmental activists but there has been progress in recent years. I'm still of the opinion that flooding the market with the synthetic ivory a group of scientists created a few years back (which is much safer than some other other proposals) would work well in concert with this approach. Drastically increase the supply and the price will plummet.

I'm very hopeful that this new bill will help get rid of the high demand of ivory. So many species of elephantes have been unnecessarily killed and put on the endangered species list because of the demand for their tusks. I agree and feel like the initial demand for ivory will go down once it is deemed illegal because people will be more apprehensive about buying it. When ivory is being illegally poached and legally sold it is easier for people's moral compass to sway and be alrigbt with purchasing such goods since they can't know for sure weather the ivory they are purchasing was aquired legally or illgally. I don't think this bill will be able to rectify the situation completely because there will still be those people out there that want it even more since it will become harder to come by. I just hope for the elephantes sake it severely decreases the amount that are poached each year!

Hei @valth.

Glad to know that after China, Hong Kong showed a good gesture by banning ivory produce and close ivory trade till 2021. Big win for the conservationists and all the animal lovers. It was such a brutal act to kill 30,000 innocent elephant for ivory (i would say to please rich people wish) . Hopefully after these countries showed a good intent to ban ivory trade it will help to decrease innoecnt elephant killing to great number. I am happy that Hong Kong government increase the penalties for wildlife crime, it will help us to have good control. Law enforcement is necessary for a positive impact on the society. it will help to make this world far better than now. Keep sharing @valth

30K is a big number.. I consider elephants a cute kind animal also loyal.. Alot of stories from history we had when loyality of elephants is proved.. How someone so cruel to harm an animal for a thing.. Yeah things like comb and many ornaments and jewellery made by ivory is famous among ppl.. Specially comb are in demNd as they are pretty good for hair diseases.. But its so sad to be so cruel.. Hope this bill will help elephants to live a better protected life
