Are you building your nest egg like the swans?

in Silver Bloggers2 years ago

Hello Hello Hivians and silver bloggers alike

How has your week been progressing?

Mine has been pretty good so far and I thought I would write today about how nature gave me some thoughts on a recent walk. Being Wednesday I will join into the #wednesdaywalk from the wonderful @tattoodjay #makemesmile challenge hosted by @elizacheng

The pictures that you see will be from Raith Lake in the Kingdom of Fife in Scotland and they are all taken by me.

A few weeks ago, I saw a pair of mute swans and wondered if they would be breeding. Well my wonderings were answered.

IMG_0716.JPG

You can see that the mother to be is sitting on her nest. The nest is in the water and the shoreline is quite secluded so this pair of swans are much more wild that Susie and Stevie Swan their cousins in my local park.

I have called this pair Sylvia and Sandy, you will see that have allowed a young cygnet who was born I guess last year to hang around which is quite unusual.

Eventually Sylvia heard my calls and came for a closer look.

IMG_0726.JPG

Once she realised that there was food then she was chowing down like there is no tomorrow. You can see the little brown pellets of swan food that I buy for them in the water.

Then she came up to say hello once she realised who I was.

IMG_0748.JPG

She was looking very lean, so I will make a point of going up there on Friday to feed her more. The lake used to be a fishery until last year so I wonder if there less food going round in the ecosystem.

One thing they do here, is tag the swans, and you can see Sylvia's tag in the next picture.
IMG_0740.JPG

When I saw Sylvia in her nest I noticed feathers on her beak, she must have been preening herself and why not, a lady always needs to look her best for me 🤣

IMG_0723.JPG

That was such a cute picture of her, see Zac @papilloncharity I think I am getting the hang of this awesome camera now!

IMG_0714.JPG

IMG_0739.JPG

When swans eat, they take water in with their food, to digest it easier, so the feathers washed away and left her with a clean beak after she had eaten.

While Sylvia was getting fed by me, she had left her nest, and the elder cygnet was looking a bit bemused, it was as if he did not know what he should be doing!

IMG_0744.JPG

The coast is clear he thought, but wait a minute, I better check the contests of the nest!

IMG_0745.JPG

silver_divider_logo.png

So this got me to thinking about our nest eggs.

How are you building yours?

Of course, as part of Hive we are extremely lucky in that we have Hive Backed Dollars HBD and we now have the ability to save them with an insane 20.00% APR that rate being the current rate defined by the Witnesses.

In addition to that HBD, we can wrap some HBD and farm it for more rewards, check this post pHBD-USDC for further details.

Then we have the airdrops that are on the Hive blockchain.

Talking of airdrops, have you all claimed your May share of LARYNX , you can either do via the website directly or check out the How to CLaim LARYNX - Step by Step Tutorial

I have been various things on the Hive blockchain and been ignoring my other chain investments for the time being.

How have you been building your nestegg recently?
silver_divider_logo.png

IMG_0764.JPG

Once Sylvia was back on her nest and the elder cycgnet was watching, who comes back to see what the hoohaa was all about? Yep you guessed it Sandy, he had been MIA, which was all fine and dandy as it meant there was more food for Sylvia.

I did however feed Sandy and his son from last year!

IMG_0761.JPG

Now that new life is on its way, Sandy is much more on guard than before, do you see how his wings are up, ready for fight mode, they can be quite mean if they don't know you or feel threatened!

IMG_0753.JPG

This is view from the Swan family's waterfront property, pretty damn good view is you ask me!

Then it was time for the wander home.

IMG_0771.JPG

Someone had been feeding the birds I think, whenever I see these, I am reminded of a coconut bra!

IMG_0705.JPG

Of course nature is amazing and there is #alwaysaflower so whilst thinking of @dswigle I snapped some gorgeous beauties.

IMG_0672.JPG

Being Scotland what a fitting way to end this post with some bonnie bluebells!

I'm more than happy to pop in. I enjoyed it.

Yep! You are certainly getting the hang of the camera and some great shots in here Ed.
Steady is as steady goes and over time you might also land up with a photo in a wildlife magazine.
Greetings to Sandy and Sylvia and maybe you should tell Sylvia not to hang her bra in public view like that :)

!BEER

Thanks Zac, well all the tips I gleaned from you. It really is an amazing camera, and giving me plenty of fun using it.
hehe the funny thing, is the Sylvia's bra is not that far from where she actually is!
I shall keep perservering and trying out, there are so many functions etc, I have not even scratched the surface yet!

Nothing much and I am glad to see you getting to grips with the camera. You will surely have much more fun with it.
I am sure that Sylvia noticed this and she will now hang her bra out of sight :)

You will find much help in the operating manual my friend.

!BEER

I dod think Sylvia will keep her bra away from prying eyes, I will find out when I go visit her tomorrow!

Yes the operating manual is becoming my friend now:)

Hahaha and please give her our love!

Some great tips in there and you are more clever than me, so after you are fully conversant with the manual, then you can go into the advanced and learn how to shoot the planets.
I could never get that one right and my best is the moon.

Had to give Sylvia a pass and visit the local pair closer to the house. No bras were to be soon!

Ah yes the manual, so you can shoot planets, wee damn that seems a bit far fetched for me!
The moon is a realistic first target though!
!PIZZA

Maybe Sylvia warned the local lady to hide her bra, asw their is a guy going around and taking photos of their bras !LOL

I took my old camera SX60 in for repairs as I took photos directly of the sun and the whatchamacalit burnt out. In the shop where I took it there was a great photo of Mars on the wall. So I asked and the owner of the shop told me that it was taken with a SX60. How, I don't know, but I am sure that some extra mackthingis were added to the lens.

Yep, the moon is thankfully easy with this camera.

😆😆😆

They are beautiful photos.

hehe my dirty mind haha, thank you, the models make the picture taking easy:)

😮 Coconut bras? Now, that sounds uncomfortable.

Well really yes! 😄😄😄

hehe is what they have on the cartoons🤣🤣🤣 but, I imagine very uncomfortable!

Lovely post with amazing photos!
What a stunning pair of mated swans Sylvia and Sandy are! I'm looking forward to seeing their youngsters. Nothing cuter than baby cynets swimming behind parent across serene waters. Of course baby swans sitting upon the parent's back are adorable too!

I regularly invest SBD to savings, one of the best investments around!

They are a gorgeous pair and because the lake is a bit of a hike to get to, they are out of the public view so more wild than pond swans for example. Yes the youngsters me too, this was one push for me to get a good camera, was the ability to capture this years offspring, because I agree how cute they are a family gliding on the water like they do.
Thank you so much for curating @ninahaskin that made me smile no end:)

What a lovely post and we are getting to know our new area and hoping to find some swans to support. Mind you two weeks ago we saw a huge family of goslings enter the canal to be joined by a second equally large family of more geese. I’d never seen such a large group before.

I think this spring has been one of those special ones as everything is abundant this year.

Nest eggs. Yes I’ve started to put some HBD away in my savings pot and already quite impressed with the interest I’ve earned, even on such a tiny investment thus far.

Today I made my first lightning transaction using @brianoflondon ’s v4v app to buy a gift card. So will be my first purchase using HBD.

What a lovely post and we are getting to know our new area

Thank you Nick, are you all settled in now?
That is cool seeing so many geese and goslings, one thing we don't really get here unfortunately.
Yes the savings are great and the HBD interest will mount up over time!
Ah yes the v4v app, I have seen some posts about it, but not done any exploring about it, that is awesome that you used HBD to buy a gift card. How cool is that!

Yes we’ve settled in really fast thanks. I’ll test the gift card out tomorrow in Sainsbury for our weekly food shop. That’s exciting stuff!

That is good to hear, and it will be great if you can get your weekly shop at Sainsbury's with the gift card!

I’ll write about it 🤓

Oh that will be cool!

Ah, the bluebells are blue! ;O)

Swans are awesome. I totally love seeing them in ponds and parks and the like. There are quite a few in the ponds in the Glasgow parks. Its great when its sunny and the water is still and yo can get a good close up. Nice camera btw!

Ah, the bluebells are blue!

hell yeah they are :)
Oh yes there are loads in the Glasgow ponds, they are so cool birds. I must admit I do love it when they have a go at someone. Our local pond has a pair and they are so territorial. Apart from having a go at humans getting to close to the cygnets, they chased off a gaggle of geese. Part of the reason I got my camera was to be able to capture something like that, as it was too far away for a smartphone camera!
When it is sunny and still you can some cracking closeups tho!

Heh heh, I do like it when they have a go too. I saw one chase a kid on a scooter a few weeks ago. I couldn't help but laugh.

I need to dig out my old digital camera. It has a great zoom but I haven't used it in ages. Bet I can't find the charger!

Hehe yeah it is fun seeing then chase people 😂😂😂
Oh cool.warmer weather is coming, yeah I am the same and forever misplacing bloody chargers!

Warmer weather ahoy, just another month for a fleeting glimpse of sun!

haha and fleeting is a bloody apt word to describe it!

I felt it today, five minutes...boom!

Isn't nature amazing? I have ducks that built their nest under one of my big bushes. The water is right across the street. So every year, I get Mallard ducks building a nest, in the same spot. I am sure they were probably born right there and they are coming back home. Last year, she laid 12 eggs and that was pretty exciting. :)

Your shots are fabulous and your swans are so personable. I have never seen a swan so friendly!

A perfectly beautiful #WednedayWalk! With flowers! Who can resist! Just look at those bluebonnets, one of my favorite springtime blooms. I know that it has arrived to stay when I see those bluebonnets. Aren't they delightful? #alwaysaflower

Thank you for the show! It was lovely!

Isn't nature amazing?

Seriously the best free show that is available to us, we just need to go out of the house and look!

So every year, I get Mallard ducks building a nest, in the same spot

Oh wow that would be so exciting, I would have a fieldday taking pics! I confess that Mallards are my favourite bird. 12 is a good amount as well.

I do like the swans and talk to them, and they DO recognise people, the ones in park which are constantly beside people, unlike these ones, come gliding over whenever I appear at their water's edge. They do respond to calling their names too. Mad that I am;)

I know that it has arrived to stay when I see those bluebonnets. Aren't they delightful?

Yes Spring is finally well on its way when you seem them and yes they are truly delightful, yet another example of how amazing and wonderful nature is:)

I would have had a field day taking pictures, but she wouldn't let me close and if I did, she would flee! Ducks aren't like birds. About 7 or 8 hours after having the babies, she walks them down to the water and they are done with the nest!

What a cheat! I missed the hatching.

I'm a little jelly that your swans are so responsive to you and my ducks like me as long as they don't have to look at me! Ha!

Have a great Thursday, whatever you are doing!

ah yes that's right, ducks do get them in the water pretty sharpish!
It would have been awesome though if you had seen the hatching

The swans yes they are responsive, will see when I go back tomorrow how they are, it might change once the babies are in the world!
Thank you and enjoy the the rest og your Thursday:)

such beautiful shots of the swans,

I had not heard of the Larynx airdop off to checkit out

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

I had not heard of the Larynx airdop off to checkit out

You should get a big chunk of them!

The swans are beauties and make taking great pictures of them easy :)

I did check it out, got a nice airdop, now sure how they work but will look into that sometime

oh cool, yes I have no idea what they are for, I just claim each month, you can do it monthly by the way!

thanks I did notice that I set a reminder to check next month :)

This is absolutely gorgeous Super Ed! You have to go back on Friday to visit Sylvia and Sandy. The pictures you took Sylvia are stunning! You are mastering your new toy. And I love the cygnet too. It reminds me of the pies :) But why are those swans tagged?

I've pretty much forgotten the rest of my investments too. I've been thinking these days to sell all the NFTs I have left in wax, and buy Rising Star cards with the wax ;) I have to put myself into it.

By the way, what you say that look like coconut bra seems to me to be what we call here taparas, which is a hollow fruit, hehe. And they are used as vessels.

And well this post is too gorgeous, I love all the pics.
Good evening to you!

I shall be going back tomorrow to see them, Thank you and I did say that I had taken some pictures. The new toy is amazing, I can stand on the shore and take close ups of her head, just amazing really:)

oh yes sell the NFTs, IF there is a buyer though, and it would be good to put into Rising Star as at least you know those do provide you with a return Super Eli
Taparas aha well yes they can be vessels.
Thank you Super Eli, this was a great post to write and good afternoon. Tomorrow is Friday in case you forgot!

Tomorrow is Friday in case you forgot!

Why I would forget Super Ed jeje You hopefully are going back there tomorrow :)

hehe I meant in case you had got discombobulated with the C thingy Super Eli!

Oh my god! I have never heard before of discombobulated I don't even know how to say it 🤣🤣 thanks for the new word Super Ed. You never disappoint on that 😉

jeje it is a great word, you should use it with Rorro jaja
There I expand your vocabulary Super Eli:)

I will use it for sure. I'm just waiting for the right moment 😉

What a day you had with Sylvia and Sandy and more :) It's fascinating that you seem to have a lot of feathered friends where ever you go :) Beautiful shots of all things around you Tito Ed.

I love the coconut bra, never wore one though, wonder how it would look like on me, LOL!

Regarding our nest-egg, just starting and hope to build it steady until it grows :)

It was a cracking day, and I will go up there again tomorrow and see how they are doing, I am excited to see when the babies will hatch!

Yes I do look for the feathered friends as they are good models!

The coconut bra used to be in cartoons, and now you wearing one, hehe giving me thoughts of you dancing in one CJ! What a way to start my morning with a coffee:)

Yes I am sure you are steadily building your nest egg and good for you too CJ:)

Have a terrific thursday:)

Do they hatch too soon?
The feathered friends are always beautiful of course.
And the coconut bra, can be used in Hawaiian dance, I guess, lol! Hope you didn't spill your coffee haha

Thank you Tito Ed, and have a glorious Thursday too :)

Do they hatch too soon?

I think next month or July I shall have to see, I hope to go there every Friday:)

And the coconut bra, can be used in Hawaiian dance, I guess, lol! Hope you didn't spill your coffee haha

Exactly the cartoons it was for Hawaiian dance, you nailed it perfectly! My coffee well very nearly, but it was a pretty picture I had haha

Yes let's make Thursday terrific :)

Oh, I thought they hatch fast. It will be awesome to see them when they do :)

Hahaha, can't say more on that.

Yes Tito Ed, let's make this day so awesome!

I am not sure when she laid them so that is why not really sure when they will hatch. I need to Google and find out more! Hehe yes no more😁

Hahaha, that will be a surprise for you Tito Ed. Cheers!

Sylvia and Sandy are beautiful and hopefully you can photograph the cygnets when they hatch. That will make for a great post, but be careful as Mother swan will be very protective of her young and they can do a lot of damage.

Speaking of nest eggs, I still have not claimed my Larynx tokens... is there much to it?

You were on my Dreem Port list this morning!

Thanks mate, yes both parents will be very protective once the young uns have hatched. They are really cool when they do their protection duty, as they will sit at either ends of the babies in opposite directions so covering the whole area.
Hopefully I will get some pics and now I have the zoom I can be further away and not disturb them.
The Larynx, no it is dead easy, just go there and claim, you can do it every month.
Aha via DreemPort, excellent that is good to hear:)

Superb photography so good to see you too enjoy the compact small camera that can go everywhere with you.

Scenery over water with swans, flowers and greenery so refreshing to see!

!LUV

Thank you Joan, I am surprised how small and how very light it is! Yes you can take it everywhere which is great, and of course it takes amazing pictures too!

she must have been preening herself and why not, a lady always needs to look her best for me 🤣

😂😂...the mad Scotsman fancies himself a ladies' man too I see😁

Talking of airdrops, have you all claimed your May share of LARYNX , you can either do via the website directly or check out the How to CLaim LARYNX - Step by Step Tutorial

The lake is beautiful, the swans too🥺

I'd like to visit Scotland someday 🙃

the mad Scotsman fancies himself a ladies' man too I see😁

haha no comment 🤣🤣🤣

Yes it is good to let people know of any airdrops, so am glad you saw that!
It is a beautiful spot, and it is only the occasional dog and owner that we see when there:)

haha no comment 🤣🤣🤣

😂

Yes it is good to let people know of any airdrops, so am glad you saw that!

Me too🙃

hehe well I am glad you got it.
How are you enjoying yourself on Hive now?

I'm really enjoying myself...hive is a beautiful place and it's good for my mind.
There's always something new to learn and I think this is great.

Getting inspiration on what to write about hasn't been easy though...I haven't posted in a while but I've been engaging.

Oh good, Hive is a great place and and if it is good for your mind, then that is even better!

Yes inspiration is hard at time, when we are bigger it does not matter, it seems you can write any nonsense and be rewarded.
However at our level, it still needs to be as good as we can make it:)
Engaging most definitely is the way to go, and that is how I say you:)
Wishing you a fantastic Friday and a wonderful weekend.

Thank you🙃
Happy weekend to you too 😊

😍 Scotland. Wow if I could one day have the privilege of meeting her. I have loved her since I see her in the movies, especially I have seen romantic movies shot in that part of the world. Thanks for letting us look a little further. Your post and photos are incredible, and I love how you interject some Hive movements, very interesting, I will investigate a little more about them.

Thanks for leaving the link. I came to you through Dreemport 😉

Oh she would say hello if you met her I am sure!
Scotland is a beautiful place and the swans make models that very easy to take pictures of!
I am glad that you liked and thanks for coming through Dreemport:)

Yes, she blew me away like that sweet swan, she was just there for you, no pressure 😋. That is cute. I forgot to ask you about the swan tag.

What is the reason for that? Is in danger of extinction? is it a protected bird?

All swans in the UK are protected and believe it or not over 90% actually belong to the Queen!
They tag them to keep a record of them, and see how they are breeding, the numbers etc.

They are so cute, and really they have personalities and they do remember and recognise people, I know that from interacting with some of them. I like to name them:)
thank you for commenting, I like to have fun stories when I use their pictures, their posts pay for the special food that I buy them:)
Have a fantastic Friday and a wonderful weekend :)

I like to have fun stories when I use their pictures, their posts pay for the special food that I buy them:)

It's very funny that. Thanks for that important information. wow they almost all belong to the Queen! That would never have occurred to me.

I also didn't know that they can get to know people. So you do very well to name them, because it's like you make a friend, if you see him again.

How cute they are, and knowing those details about them makes me appreciate them more. Thank you very much for that information.

I am lucky there is a park about five minutes walk from my house. That has two swans, I call them Susie and Stevie Swan, last year they had six babies and I called them cutiepies. The swans that I wrote about on this post are a little further from me, so this is only the second time that i have met them. Over time they will get to be more friends.
Yes owned by the queen! That is funny, isn't it!
img_20210719_122622_1_.jpg

That was Susie and Stevie Swan with their six children last year!

They ate a beutifull family.
yes, you really are lucky to have a lake so close. I have an artificial lagoon very close as well where there are turtles, a slime (which is like a small crocodile?), different types of birds. But there is one in particular that catches my attention, they are curlews. I always see them in pairs, and the The male scares us away, we don't even know it's there, the mother is in a nest or taking care of the little babies, but sadly we see how these babies disappear day by day, I don't know what happens to them, if another animal eats them, no I know, but without a doubt enjoying nature is a great privilege.

I think I'm going to copy your custom of naming the swans, it's very cute

Loved everything about this post, Ed! From the gorgeous swans to the beautiful bluebells erm... purple bluebells haha... to the backstories and the reminders about Larynx... off togo claim May now before I forget... haha ...oh yeah I had forgotten! Thanks Ed.

Thank you so much Sam, you never know what you find in one of my posts, blue purplebells or purple bluebells but Sandy and Sylvia will remind you about the airdrops!

Hello hello, Dreemport sent me here to say hello to Sylvia and Sandy.

I hope you had a nice day and have a great evening 😊

Hello Hello ah yes, I am glad that DP did!
Yes been a good evening and just boiling some eggs, to have egg mayo sandwiches for tomorrow with Sylvia and Sandy!
How is Super Eli feeling?

 2 years ago (edited)

Hi Super Ed! I'm feeling much better. Just a cough from time to time, but otherwise, everything is fine.

Cool! I hope you and your better half enjoy the egg and mayo sandwiches and Sylvia and Sandy enjoy the food you'll bring them ;) Have a nice picnic at the lake 😄😄😊🦢🦢

Good morning Super Eli, no Sylvia and Sandy today, much stuff to be done, did have the egg mayo sandwiches for lunch today though and have the beans on in the slow cooker!
this afternoon after dinner we will go up and see if Stevie and Susie are around, now they nest on the island it is harder to know what is happening!
Have a fantastic Friday Super Eli💙🦢🐈🐈🐈

Morning morning and and afternoon afternoon to you, Super Ed ;) ☀️
Oh, I see. I hope you can see Stevie and Susie.
Hum the beans 😋 looking forward to your recipe.
I hope that despite a lot to do, it will be a good Friday and that it will be a magic weekend, Super Ed 😃💙😸😺

The beansssss damn they smell so good, the whole flat smells awesome while they cook, not long to go now, they have been on since 11am and now is 5.19pm so getting time to eat soon!
Yes then will see who is about, if they built their nest on the island which I think they did, then only Stevie will be visible if he is out and about!
Good morning morning Super Eli and I hope you are now 100% fighting fit!
Enjoy your day:)

hummm lunchtime here and waiting for the beans, have you sent them already Super Ed? jeje 😋
You'll tell me about Stevie and Susie.
I'm 100% fighting fit already, thank you 💙

Someone did great with his camera. I was thinking that our elder cygnet would put up a fight for distracting his Sylvia.... Unless, Sylvia wasn't his 🙃

Thanks ISka, still a work in progress with the camera, but getting there;)
hehe oh the elder cygnet is still confused I think 🤣🤣🤣

Hahaha... I think he is confused too 😂😂

I know you will get it. Don't worry. ❤️❤️

hehe thank you Iska!

My pleasure ❤️

You are such a kind soul. The swans will be grateful.

I like to think we can all do our bit and help, and at this time of year they need extra food, especially the females that have lost a lot of body weight laying their eggs! Thank you for that :)

Beautiful #wednesdaywalk Ed! I can see you're having fun with your new camera!

It is a cracker, I hope you claimed your Larynx!
