Individuality

We're all individuals, our own selves, despite family connections, ancestry, partners, children and the general population around us; we are us and they are them. Of course, we as individuals, form society as we know it, we're part of something bigger than ourselves and are all connected in some manner be it through family, friendship or professional or social ties, by location, religion and in any number of other ways...But you are you, I am me, and everyone else is them.

I was thinking today about how, through technology - computers for instance - each of us individuals see a way to express and demonstrate our individuality; not that I'm on social media, but I know enough to know that a quick glance will underline that point. I was thinking however, that the technology we use to express our individuality is actually causing the opposite to occur in many ways.

Computers, social medias like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok and search engines like Google are programed to see who we are, to spot similarities and ultimately connect people with similar thoughts and predilections, likes and dislikes, without us even knowing it's happening mostly. These algorithms learn us and guide us towards or away from particular things and I believe it influences who we are, how we think and act and what may happen in our futures. Each of us is at risk of losing a little of our individuality and I don't think it's a healthy or viable way forward for human beings to lose that freedom of thought and creativity.

I'm so thankful that I am not on any social media and don't spend time scrolling through the internet be it You Tube, news services or shopping sites all of which gather data.

My partner doesn't do it either and, instead, we have measures in place to actively prevent the gathering of our online presence and habits. It's the same with the media in general, we shy away from it, "news and current affairs", as it's leaned towards implanting thoughts, propaganda, and to lead a person into a particular behavior and that can slowly nibble away at a person's individuality.

Preach!! We get so reliant on this "Technology" (not you... just saying) that I fear we sometimes get "Lost in the Machine". You now it is always good to see your words, dear soul... I feel quite the same as you do. But like my last week prompt said..."It's not the situation. It's how you handle it"... I'd say you are doing just fine! Have a great rest of your dear, my friend...

Most people are lost, or have lost their true selves, within social medias and other things such as consumerism. Priorities have changed and rather than feeling good to be alive people feel good because they bought something, a new phone for instance, and I think it's quite sad and pathetic; the social media networks are there to promote that, people finding validation and relevance externally when it should really be found from within.

Thanks for your comment, I'll continue to do fine as you put it, as I'll continue to stay off social media. Have a nice Friday.

I agree 100%

My @pooky-jax spends waaaayyyyy too much time "Scrolling".

Me. Not so much. I spend limited time on Hive. While traveling I will be listening to RAV Dan Bongino & InfoWars. Too much to do in the 3D world. Virtual Reality is just a hobby.

It's a waste of time, scrolling on Facebook and things like that; I know people like to justify it but I think if people are engaged with their real lives they'll not have to live vicariously through other people...which is mostly a fabrication anyway.

Becca 🌷

I try to avoid social media as well. I don't have Instagram, and Tiktok, and I barely use Twitter and Facebook. My main social media is Hive and Reddit, and I use Reddit mainly to get some news. I feel like decreasing my social media exposure helped me do the things I like more. It's good that you and your partner have measures in place to keep yourselves protected.

Only Twitter, Hive, Facebook and Reddit...That's you reducing it? Those four seem like a lot. I just can't be bothered, I'm quote invested in the real world and my real live so don't feel the need to live through other people, I'm not much interested in the news either, it's all an illusion or mostly fabricated anyway.

Becca 🌷

I guess it does look like a lot when viewed that way. I use FB messenger to talk to friends. I don't view or post in FB at all. Twitter, I just use when sharing Splinterlands posts, which is barely 5 minutes. But yeah, I think I do need to lessen my Hive reading a bit. Saying that news are an illusion and mostly fabricated is pretty interesting though.

"News" is propaganda designed to influence people to think a particular way and much of it is baseless, that's why terms like "fake news" exist. People believe what they are fed and corporations and governments are happy to feed people their thoughts and opinions; social media platforms do it as do the general media. Some like to unplug from it, myself for instance, and some embrace it. I'd rather have my own thoughts and opinions independent from those influences.

Becca 🌷

I do agree that fake news exist, and that a lot of powerful people twist the news for their benefit. It is just a matter of being knowledgeable enough to find the truth.

Yes, knowledgeable, but billions are not and so they simply follow like the sheep; one of the reasons society is in such strife.

What a beautiful song I played in the background while reading you!

If it is true, everything is organised to be a big database of people, to know more and more about everyone, and above all, the ultimate goal is control. The less data we give, the less of us is much better and of course take the security measures we can. I totally agree.

Thank you Becca.💗

It's a nice song from a group I used to like a lot. I think they broke up now but I still listen to their music.

The music always remains, have a beautiful afternoon and evening 🤗💗
