“Hike up to the Moorish castle ruins” ~ Sendero Castillo de Montemayor, Benahavís in Spain 🇪🇸

in Wednesday Walk2 years ago (edited)

Hi all 👋🏻

Today I want to share with you all, this HIKE up the mountain from last Sunday, it is more a hike than a casual walk, as it was quite steep at times… last bit we needed our hands and feet to get up, that steep it was 😎

With this post I’m joining in at the Wednesday Walk challenge and Make me Smile challenge. That are hosted by @tattoodjay and @elizacheng every week on Wednesday.
‼️Have a look: Here in the Wednesday Walk Community if you want to join in!‼️

Or at @tattoodjay ’s Post from today here!

I will guide you through my photos and hike as I follow the time stamps of them. So you can come along with me and look at all the details and surroundings I show you 😎 as if you would be right there with me. Are you up for this today?

Photos are taken with my iPhone on 8 May 2022.
We started exactly at 12:00h Sunday, after parking our car at the start of the hike.

Location of the ruins from this castle on Google Maps, see the yellow star ⭐️ :
ac07c32b_1a24_47a1_b93d_b6eea5709631.jpeg
The start was 1.7 km before that.
If you look closely at the map, (the green flags) you can see it is close to the Sendero de las Libélulas/ The dragonfly path - and the moody walk sendero acequia del Guadalmina, I posted a while back: This Post! and This Post!
We like to explore this area… so we went back 😁

What new is to my post today is the following:
cc0b6685_8e1e_4815_9b77_74b4b59d3f2f.jpeg
As we were curious how steep the last climb of 300 meters to the top would be, I switched on a running/ walking app. (Used to be runtastic but is called running now)
You see our exact route… the green dot where I started the app. But we actually started the hike where the end is= the red dot.

So you see only from the last 300 meters going up and back and than all the way to our starting point pictured. 😎
The entire hike would have been 3.4 km -ish.

The entire way going was uphill to the castle, this took of course a longer time then going downhill. Hehehe 🤓
Total time of this hike was about 2 hours 30 minutes.

988947a8_6d82_433c_a43f_dae2025c1960.jpeg

Last 300 meters had an elevation of 100 meters, we did 40 minutes there and back. It was scary at times as it had a steep drop right next to you, with nothing to hold on to. (I don’t like heights, but I managed 🤩 and was proud of myself.)
I do not have photos of that bit, as we needed our hands free… to climb. I let you know in the photos about where it was.

Maybe I start using this app more on our new walks and hikes. What do you think? Should I?

Let’s start our Hike, here we go…

We parked our car at the end of the road, there is a hotel located. Our view from the road is high above it and we can look into it’s gardens.

Here you see the hotel itself and will be a guide to see where we came from in the photos.

Just above it the trail starts. It says it is 1.7 km to the Castillo de Montemayor ~ the ruins of the Montemayor Castle.

Our view in front next to the sign.

As you can see we are going up… this is on an elevation of about 300 meters, the castle is at 580 meters high.

Our views around us.

Along the way I find today loads of flowers and plants… beautiful to see, even these prickly ones 😁

A butterfly, I could just capture… before it flew away.

Our path we follow. Still going up.

Next to the path more spring flowers 🌸

Such a pretty sight it is.

Yep, we are still on the right course 😎☀️

I see some shade… let’s go there for a moment, as it is rather warm out in the sun. It’s 22 degrees Celsius this day. Did you bring a cap, water and sunscreen 🧴?

A few more flowers.

As we go further we see a few cork trees next to the path, they have been harvested already. As you clearly can see.

A little further a sign again with a stunning backdrop.

At the end here of this path we see a gate and a sign saying we need to go left uphill further. There is a house at the end. We will see later from above.

Let’s go where the sign says… around the corner we go… 😊

We see in front of us an electricity tower, it’s the end of the line.

We have these views now looking towards the Mediterranean Sea 🌊

More flowers I see in this area, they were so pretty… just had to share some more 🌸🌸🌸

As you can see… loads of them 🌼🌸🌼🌸

And some lavender too 😎
19dbef35_b1f1_4609_925e_2a88fd68f11f.jpeg

We are passing this gate now, it does say it is private… but I’m not sure about that. As there is only a road, nothing else. (I looked at Google maps)

View in the direction we came from, in the middle of the photo the last white building is where the hotel is. So we did hiked a long way already.

Let’s go further… we are over half way now 😁

What do I see in the distance… the top. The Castle ruins!

Let’s zoom in a bit. As you look at that steep top, we will go up along the right side of it later…
3312ba4a_e4b5_4f0e_bd12_36abc731cf0a.jpeg

Let's rest for a moment in the shade of this tree… catch our breath for what is to follow. Let’s drink some water.
11e84b09_b86f_41c2_86a9_16c819aa05c8.jpeg

A little bit further we see this sign with a lookout point. And the mountain ranges we see in front of us.
b2c044f7_a0bf_4832_99b9_7bd9ff13f63b.jpeg
It states:
”From the landscape point of view, you are standing at one of the most interesting lookouts on the Costa del Sol. Observe the narrow strip of coast between the sea and the Sierra Blanca. The key to our exceptional climate is the mountains rising to more than one thousand metres in height, that protect this coastal plain and shelter us from the cold northerly winds, whilst holding back the sea breezes. Note how mountainous the area is, making our rivers short raging torrents, with the force to gouge out ravines and canyons like the Angosturas de Guadalmina. A simple glance at the mountains reveals two different shades: the limestone rocks of the Sierra Blanca and the Sierra Camucha ranges, and the red coloured mountains like the Sierra Plamitera and the Sierra Real, consisting of peridotite, a rock of igneous origin found nowhere else in the world in such abundance as it is here in Málaga, and a niche for numerous endemic plant species.”

Next to it we see this cork tree and a sign about the Castle. You see the castle through the tree branches on the top.
5acb55bb_a127_470e_b80d_df375a2d91eb.jpeg
The sign states:
”Siglos Vlll al XV ~ 8th to 15th centuries.
Welcome to the Castle of Montemayor, one of the most impregnable fortresses of Al-Andalus. It had up to three walled enclosures separated by quite large distances for defensive purposes. The walls had small squared towers, a circular tower and several wells. It was mainly used for defence and surveillance of the farmhouses of the region, which were close to the coast and therefore in constant danger because of its proximity to the Straits of Gibraltar. From here, there could be direct visual communication with other coastal watchtowers such as the one of Castillejo de los Negros. Reports of the time refer to here as a site with high quality rubies. These were associated with honour, wisdom and prosperity of the castle inhabitants. The castle was taken by Christians in 1485.”

After a little rest we will continue and start our challenge of today. We can do this 💪🏻😁
44ebf800_1208_4334_8dbf_9ea8ce40a212.jpeg

Just 300 meters there and back to the top.
c14d5972_225d_4995_901d_c8c5e844ea12.jpeg

We see the house, that had the gate and sign to turn left… remember? This is seen from above.

Our views… right of the path.
e7b310d9_7f80_49f8_8689_d9fb0dfbca81.jpeg

It is getting steeper… In the beginning our path is wide.

I see the castle above us… half way now.

The path is getting smaller… and the drop higher.
c093b242_78f7_4751_92cd_1fd785e9c7de.jpeg

After this point we need our hands free to climb further so I have no photos of it. But you can see what I mean. Believe me it was steep 😎 especially if you don’t like heights hahaha 🤣

Over rocks now…

We reached an area below the castle now. We rest for a bit.

The castle ruins!
Let’s have a look around and go after higher up.

At the end we see… in the distance even the rock of Gibraltar. Those familiar with it can find it 😉

You are very welcome Jackie :)

😁👋🏻

That view is quite impressive! With the current weather you must have been cooking!!!

Thank you so much @edprivat 😁 it was a hot day, but we were prepared and took little rests in the shade of trees along the way. And loads of water…

What a great hike Jackie. I almost feel like I was hiking with you on this detailed tour. And the views from the castle ruins are breathtaking.

Thank you so much @coquicoin 😊 that’s so nice to here. What a trip we had, right? 😁😎
It was so worth it getting all the way up there, just for the views. They were stunning 🤩
I did feel it a few days lol not getting younger anymore.
I think it is also because of the pandemic we were stuck in the house for the lockdown. So our fitness level declined a lot. Will have to build it up slowly again 😉💪🏻

Have a wonderful day ☀️

Hehe! I'm not sure I can do as long hiking as you did speaking of fitness conditions, lol. But yes, we have to recover our fitness level after so strange times we have lived with the pandemic.

Happy afternoon to you! 😄

Hehehe lol thanks. Doing my best to keep fit and mobile. Getting older is starting to show.
We sure do @coquicoin 😊

Thank you 🙏🏻
Happy midday to you 💃🏻

It's the best we can do, to stay mobile and fit hehe. ;)
😄😊

Yes, hehehe 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻

I felt like I was with you in this journey! Keep up the great content!

Thank you so much @lofone 😎 that’s great to hear you came along with me.
Happy to share my adventures and I will keep up 💪🏻 To much fun not too…

Have a great evening further.

Very nice hike and the view from the top of the castle is worth the efforts of climbing to the top. Beautiful photos 👍

It sure was worth the effort @heroldius, I still notice it hahaha
Thank you so much.
Have a great day further 👋🏻😎

Two thumbs up on being able to pause your fear of heights to enjoy this gorgeous location and incredible views. Appreciate you doing this and sharing for us to enjoy, as I too am very anxious with heights, especially those dropoffs, wow. Just stunning.

Thank you so much @nthtv 😊 it was a slow last 300 meters up, but truly worth it. I walked at some point my back towards the edge hahaha holding on the rock and grass in front lol must have been a silly sight. But I did it 🤩 you will understand me fully.

Happy to share my adventures 😎
Have a wonderful day further!

rugged and beautiful scenery must have been a wonderful hike

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

It sure was @tattoodjay 😁 we were tired afterwards but it was soooo worth it.
We do notice we are getting older hahaha 🤣

Happy to share my adventures and walks in this great community!

Yes age tends to remind us we’re not as young and fit as we used to be

It sure does @tattoodjay
Still feel it today from the hike on Sunday hahaha 🤣

Ohh yes our recovery time seems to get longer and longer each year

I so know… but still I also like getting older. 🤓😎

I didnt mind the 50s so much the 60s seem to be slowing me down LOL

wow that was a long walk / hike. I would love to be able to do it with so much energy, to explore and enjoy so much long walks into the nature and hike once again.
My back at 31 hurts more than it should even at 65 :(
But I really enjoyed a ‘virtual walk’ while reading your post hehe!
Thanks for sharing it with us
Btw, I also love your photos - the weather is just amazing !

Thank you so much Gabriel 😁
I soooo understand. My back is really bad too. There are days I can not even walk, so don’t let my adventures fool you. I’m not as fast as it looks like. And have to be careful with what I do. Can’t lift anything. Or even walk with a bag around my shoulder plus taking photos with a camera is a no go. Nowadays it is just one of those…
Ok, I’m a bit older than you. But learned living with a bad back. Had to sell my car (Classic Mini) last December as I just can’t drive it any longer due to my back. It was in storage for 2 years already… me thinking it will go better. But nope. I am working at home for a reason.

I’m glad you enjoyed my walk and photography from this great hike.
Happy to share my adventures.

Bless you, I hope you are okay and I wish you to get better with your back!
When I was younger, nothing would stop me from running, exploring, hiking and biking for so many hours. My back is one thing, my energy is like an old battery ready to die :( I have to slowly get into a new and better lifestyle to improve my physical health. My mental health has some improvements over the past year by the simple fact that I've moved countries and I am ready for something new!

Is time for me to buy a new bike and slowly get back into old habits, for a better and painless (less pain) living

Thank you that is very kind of you. My back will never get back to normal for many reasons, but I know what I can do and can’t do over the years. I had to get used to a different me and learn to live with it. It took quite some years let me tell you.

We do need to keep moving, that is a key. To get energy… Once you are stuck by just sitting down. It’s going downhill. Try to get your mobility back, move around, cycle a bike. Good starts, to built up your energy again.
The pandemic hasn’t helped I so know, being stuck in the house for months in end. We are starting to get out again slowly… building it up, bit by bit. Get back to a fitter us.

Good to hear, that you are changing your life. Keep going! 😎👋🏻
