Jerk[y]

I don't know quite when I discovered beef jerky for the first time but haven't looked back since. I imagine back to that tentative first taste, thoughts of, is this going to taste like old boot leather, may have come to mind or, is there somewhere I can spit this out if it's horrid, possibly. I can't rightly remember but what I know is that it didn't taste like old boot leather and I didn't spit it out...I know this because I'm still eating and enjoying it.

Beef jerky is made from lean strips of beef cut thinly and dehydrated. However jerky can be made from a lot of other things including, kangaroo, deer, springbok, turkey, crocodile, tuna, horse, chicken, pork and a lot more...I like beef jerky though although some of the others I've tried are also quite good.

It's a convenient way to carry protein around considering the process of dehydration includes the addition of salt to prevent bacteria growth and beef jerky, or the others, can be kept for months without any refrigeration making it popular with trekkers, hikers, the military, general snacking, survivalists, preppers and basically anyone that wants a bit of protein but does not have the means to refrigerate it.

I've got a few favourites but recently went to an Easter weekend Fair in the countryside and ran into a stall selling their own (locally produced) beef jerky and I had to stop for a try.

The business is called Heavenly Beef Jerky and is South Australian owned - I like supporting local businesses so knew right away I'd be buying some. I had a chat with the stall-holder, found out about the sixteen different flavours they have, where they source the beef and the overall process which all seemed legit to me...and then it was time to taste a few.

I settled on three different ones. They had a special at $38 AUD for three packs which isn't too bad as far as value goes, a little more than I might pay in the supermarket but far better quality. I chose tandoori, Alien (coriander and green chili) and smoked which is my favourite of the three. I am careful to ensure there's a low sugar content in the beef jerky I buy because a lot of the store-bought versions include a lot of brown sugar in the marinades; these three I bought were rather low in sugars thankfully.

I'm not completely sure, but I believe the work jerky comes from the Peruvian word for dried meat, ch'arki, but no matter where it comes from beef jerky is legit. There's other versions of it from all over the world, another of my favourites is biltong from South Africa, and it's been widely used for many hundreds of years and more...so it can't be bad right?

Have you ever tried beef jerky, or any other meat of the jerky variety? Did you like it or hate it? Feel free to comment below if you'd like, I'm curious to hear if you're had any experiences with it. Just so you know, when I was writing this post about beef jerky I was eating beef jerky...It's sort of like the circle of life right?

We don't have this brand here, but we got a nice local ones! My older daughter loves jerky

I know so many people who screw their face up at the thought of it but have never actually tried it; typical for humanity I guess, fear what they don't know.

Let me know if you want me to send you some of this one, I'm happy to do so.

It's pretty crazy how much the jerky market has boomed over the past decade or so. I remember reading a story a while ago about artisanal jerky being the next big thing. I used to make my own, but haven't done it in a long time. There are so many good ones out there these days it almost isn't worth doing the work yourself!

I'd like to try making my own, it's not all that difficult I guess, but like you say it's so much easier buying it and with so much around it's not even all that costly. My brother makes his own biltong, I've not tried it as he lives a long way off but I will some day; he reckons it's pretty good, and @mrbonkers eats it like it's the only food on the planet apparently. Lol.

I've tried biltong and I actually prefer jerky over it. It is quite easy, you just need to make sure you get the right curing salt. I've made batches with beef and venison. I had a dehydrator at the time, but my buddy made his in his oven.

I'll make some when I find some time, life is...well, let's just say there's not a lot of room left in it for non-essential things right now. 😞

I hear you there. I noticed you missed a couple of days of posting, so I figured you were busy with work.

Work and other things man, I need 34 hours in a day, 24 isn't enough. I'll make it work, life isn't always easy right?

After the day I have had, I can definitely say that it isn't easy. As long as you are taking time for the things that are really important, everything else will sort itself out!

I don't hate it but I don't like it hahah!! I would eat some only if I'd have to...for some reason. 🙄 (or maybe for its protein intake) LOL. But I dont think...I'd chose something else for sure. 😁
Instead, my husband loves it and I sometimes buy it for him, when I see it in the supermarkets. But we have so few options here in Romania, and with all the additives and sugars in some of them...we're a bit limitated to find a good one.
We tried the salmon jerky when going to Canada. I don't remember the taste (probably didn't like it much), but my husband says it's damn good.

Well, if I lived with someone who cooked as well as you do I'd have no need to eat beef jerky! 😊

Although, I'd probably still eat it because it's good!

Thank youuuuuu 😊!
Sometimes it's frustrating though because I do my best to cook something that takes a lot of time and then....we're like :

Mehhhh......it's OK!

However...I try to find easy and delicious recipes to make because I don't like to waste my time in the kitchen! I mean....I am reasonable but I aint that type to spend HOUUUURS in the kitchen.

I like beef jerky. I think it is one of the healthier options for snacks. It is easy to store, doesn't go bad easily once opened, and has lots of protein. The only sad thing about it is, it is difficult to eat with rice because of how dry it is.

Yeah, it's a good thing.

You have a very odd fixation with rice though, or so it seems. Maybe eat your beef jerky without the rice, that'll solve your problem of it being too dry to eat with rice.

I'm just making it seem that way. And I do eat it without rice haha.

Lol, ok then. Had me fooled.

Anyway, I just had rice for breakfast.

(Not really) 😁

While you have had biltong over there I would still like you to try the authentic local thing. There are so many recipes! I have eaten so much of it from all over I can definitely say that the location I is dried at with certain temperatures and humidity definitely play a part in the curing process.

There's several businesses here, owned and operated by South Africans, who make it and sell it so I can only assume it's the same. They don't use South African beef though but Australian beef is better anyway. Lol.

Hahahaha. One day we shall need to do a proper comparison! 😉

Yep, I agree. I was only fucking around though.

Or was I?

Seriously though, just joking.

Not.

Ok, I was.

Not. 🤪

I like biltong better than beef jerky, the flavours are better, boerewors is also good (which we also get here in abundance). It's all good though you know? I like to try things from different places and once I'm onto it I'll come back for more.

Dehydrated most definitely not the same as hung dried, then it comes down to the meat itself.

Ostrich would be thin strips dried to the extreme, Kudu similar, whereas Beef I prefer slightly wet with some yellow strip fat for flavour.

Biltong munch depends on taste, spices used, cure method, process normally better attained at higher altitude (dry air) in sun with some wind during winter months.

Eat whichever floats your boat..... Excellent to pack on hikes or camping trips far from shops, as is dried fruits and nuts.

It's such a convenient snack and with so much protein is good for energy also...add some dried fruit and nuts and some water and there's a pretty healthy meal on the go.

Always water, would be remiss of anyone venturing anywhere without it!

At first I thought to myself that it's the bag thing... then I read about it and found out. No, I've never tried any kind, but it made me want to, you describe them as very good and if they are low in sugar, all the better. I'll have to find out where to get them!

Good night Galen!

It's a fairly common product around the world I think, you should be able to find some; you might not like it but life is too short not to try a thing or two right?

I want to give it a try! I don't lose anything by giving it a try...

I was fond of the Jack Links Teriyaki for awhile. But it is priced highly and Sammi Jo steals it from me... 😳

Yeah, we have that one here too, it's pretty good but the problem for me is it's one of the highest is sugar content. I sneak a bit from time to time although considering the cost I prefer to get one I can eat without the sugar issue.

Sammi Jo is a beef jerky girl huh? Legit.

She is... Well an anything I am eating girl. I try not to feed her people food, but she always gets a bite size sample. Even ice cream.

Ice Cream Kitty 2012-03-12.jpg

I am not a connoisseur by any means but I do like it. I don't buy it much because like you said, most of it that you get from the store is very salty. I still like the taste, but try not to eat very salty things frequently.

They had some here, also store bought, that was bacon jerky. It really tasted good to me.

Smokey is always a good choice in meats of many kinds.

Well, I'd eat beef jerky with you any day, a non-salty one...although most are very salty. I have a fairly low-salt diet so I don't mind some beef jerky now and then, it's not like I have it every day.

Beef jerky party and your place!

Wouldn't that be funny if you invited people over and what you served was multiple trays of different kinds of beef jerky?? Everybody sitting around, chewing and chewing....LOL

Lol, yeah hilarious.

"What's for dinner Jace."

"Beef jerky."

"And dessert?"

"Beef jerky."

"What would you like me to bring?"

"Beef jerky."

Yeah... like that !

Galen, the answer to the question is yes, I have eaten jerky. In Spain it is typical of a region called León, and it is made from cow's milk. You can also buy cured pork ham without any difficulty. Of this last type I still have a bone that is used here to flavor soups and some stews. A hug

It's made from cows milk there? I'm not sure how that works, it's salted and dried meat everywhere else.

it's salted and dried meat everywhere else.

As with all foods, there are different qualities, but in general it is very good. And it looks like this

Ah ok, I thought you meant they made jerky out of the milk.

I think the translator made a little joke about jerky. 😊

Wow I have not seen such food before! Learnt something new today!

Oh really? I guess there's all sorts of things out there specific to particular countries. I thought beef jerky was reasonably universal but perhaps not.

Yeah hehe!

hi you!!!

huge fan of jerky here...in th states I dont know if I ever didn't have it lol I feel like as far bad as I can remember I've eaten it hahaha

my absolute fave is a new kind that is Korean bbq...the way they do it is unlike any other jerky I've ever tasted.

but just the flavor (cuz I've had Korean bbq jerky before).but the texture.oh man is it so good...just this one brand in th states. but I do think it has more sugar...hmmm

and about 2 years ago I finally found biltong! my friend from SA had been talking about it and I thought it wasn't here ..but it was!! I just never realized what it was I guess haha

that has a more spiced..dry flavor.but I like it!

and alien flavored jerky...hehehehe yes I would have gotten that too.

so before I forget why I came here!! lol I recently had to change my settings on discord for.dms...and I went to say hi to you today and realized umm.. yep...it affected our dms lol. so sending you a friend request so it opens back up again.. lolol accept please 😌

Ah yes, you found biltong, good thing too because it's awesome. Jerky or biltong, it's a great way to snack and so convenient huh?

No worries on the Discord thing.

Wait until you try South African ‘Biltong’. You’ll be blown away with how amazing the taste is if you like Jerky 😍

Well, I actually mention that in the post, that I have tried it and like it...We have it all over the place here and my brother makes his own.

My bad. It’s super late here and I must have missed that due to lack of sleep too. Rereading 😂

Yep, I figured as much.

We have several South African owned shops here that sell everything South African so they have a range of Bilton available. Every supermarket carries it also.

I have eaten beef a lot of time but not beef jerky. It is not popular nor common here. But yes, mutton jerky is something people like a lot and make it on their own (just marinate the salt and keep it in the sun for hours or a day probably). I don't like the taste but my family likes it tho.

Mutton jerky sounds way better than aardvark jerky.

You have tasted aardvark?😵

That looks easy and fast to make, din't know this food exist !LOL

What were restaurants called during the Jurassic?
Diner-saurs.
