A Couple Of Rocks With Nothing On Them

in #outofthinairlast year (edited)

I dropped Pura off at the mechanic in Argentina is a clever way of saying she was getting a tune-up down south. I had a couple hours to kill.

I did not stab the clock in the dash of the car. Nothing against short cuts, I don't carry a knife. So, I found a footpath where I could kill time.

The first of however many turns on a walking trail I've never been on and, less than 20 yards in, a sign.

SLAVE CEMETERY
A farm of this size was probably maintained with the assistance of six to ten slaves. They lived and worked on this farm for approximately 60 years beginning around 1800. The slave graves are marked with small, rough limestone rocks. Two graves are oriented east-west and have both head and foot stones.

C38F6553-7C94-4BBC-A642-700E7494023F.jpeg

In other words; after living out their natural lifespans where from sun up to sun down they were treated like slaves without ever experiencing basic tangible treasures like romance or freedom or often times the ability to read and write because they're born to a slave owner. Bred to work land by hand without the right to think cuz if they did, they paid for it in whips and lashes or worse and when they died as in history, laid to rest forever.

A couple of rocks with nothing on them.

Atlas had that look like I don't know what you're gonna get us out of this time but I'm down like a shadow.

We continued in the direction we were going. Nature's got her green on in May.

There was a bridge. And another turn. I should take a picture of that bridge and put it on the cover I thought.

Then I thought about the cemetery with headstones you can't see unless they're circled in red and thought I'll probably put that one on the cover when off in the distance of this seemingly middle of nowhere footpath stood a middle of nowhere structure.

I hate SNAKES!

ssSsssNakeS!!

I hate snakes even more than fingers who think that because they point left they're better than the right or vice versa when in reality they're both just part of a hand and everyone pulling their strings is on top. There's only two sides—in / out.

I'm on the outside looking in. Snake territory separates me from that structure. They blend magically like cookies and cream. I know this. I practically got killed by one once.

Spotted, sand-like print is undetectable against a bed of rocks or in grass or wherever they lay and wait. I know what to look for and still can't see what I'm looking at.

No idea what that building thing is. The footpath continued so I left all of those sounds behind me as quickly as possible when around another turn, another sign.

Apparently that building thing is an 18th century refrigerator. It belonged to a guy named Jacob Lones, the original settler of this land back in 1790. It says that river he built it on top of is a natural spring. It was built there to store perishables. But, if that was his refrigerator and spring, then that cemetery was his, too, and so were those slaves. Jacob Lones didn't build shit, he had it built for him.

We didn't get much further in the same direction before being interrupted again.

F06F3A22-886F-4673-BD01-024B1F73C59B.jpeg

Alright, well, it seems we're on a plantation. Can't say I've done that before now. And that house out there is where the Lones family lived. It says each brick was handmade and fired right here. A parking lot surrounds the handmade brick plantation house today, it's full of cars. That house is probably a museum now.

I don't know how we got here but we're there—middle of an old plantation. There's probably scheduled tours and I bet they begin, not end at that house. I'm so good at killing time I do it backwards and can't tell the difference.

It's always interesting to explore without researching the area first :) ... Except for the graves, of course. What an awful way to treat others 😢

Spotted, sand-like print is undetectable against a bed of rocks or in grass or wherever they lay and wait. I know what to look for and still can't see what I'm looking at.

You need a good walking stick to swish in front of you as you walk in those places...

Is Atlas completely well???

She is! Thanks more than THIS for asking. It was a tough five weeks, two of those were no pressure at all. I had my doubts, honestly, wasn't sure she was gonna get over that one. Felt so bad thinking I broke her.

I'm happy to report she's 100%. Jumping on and off things like a working dog, no hint of a limp. Check me out, get me talkin about Atlas I'm all bla bla bla bla bla.

Even more than Mornal. = }

Much thanks wrestlingdesires.

I'm glad she's perfect again :) It wasn't your fault, but things like that really are scary. What have you been teaching her lately???

She's got her two magic commands down, the one's where she won't move once directed and released.

All of the basic commands like walk, come, go, stay, and of course the little tricks, too. We're currently working on the heel. She just mastered walking on and off leash so the heel is a little challenging for her.

She's doing really good and I can hardly stand her in case you can't tell. She'll be tested in two weeks at the K-9 joint here for advanced placement which means I can then proceed with her to the bark / protect command (everything short of attack) which would then qualify her for airplane travel.

6n1/2 months and she just weighed in Saturday at 71 pounds. Man, thanks a lot for asking, appreciate it. I'm so proud of her.

That's so awesome, congratulations 🙌 You should definitely be proud of her :) Is she going to be certified as a K-9?

Man, I appreciate your interest. Thank you.

Here I go, again...

She's registered pedigree currently and will receive her basic K9 cert a week from tomorrow. Until she receives that, we can't proceed to advanced which is required for air travel, food establishments, things to that extent.

Advanced can be varied, owners choice. Agility, for example, search dogs, sniffing dogs, et cetera will qualify for advanced. We're going bark/bite officially since she excels naturally at agility.

No attack, though. Not any time soon at least and never 'official.' Once the dog's certified attack, all bets are off. No more travel or anything and they're essentially a weapon. Weapons belong under lock and key. Not interested.

So she'll be able to go pretty much anywhere you can??? That sounds perfect :)

Yeah, no need to be teaching her the attack methods. It could possibly get her hurt if anything actually happened, because she'd be more likely to go for clothing, arms, etc. Her natural instincts are better. If you're genuinely worried about that, you could spar with her in private as a game. Teach her (gently and in a fun way, of course) to avoid kicks, hits, and other things people might try. Much like the "catch me" game kids and dogs play together, but a little more intense.

The little man and I picked up a snake the other day it was fun. Little fella pooped on us! He just wanted to be our friend, until he didn’t and tried to bite with his non-venomous teeth.

I saw that. Didn't you get my message? You owe me a new phone. I know, shitty. I was never able to look at my other screen again after that cover image you did.

Lol I got you man, you can have my brand new, gently used iPhone 5!

Eh, we had a couple come out and clean the gutters about a month ago. Young couple, cool people. Pura and I took off for a minute..

Got back as they were leaving. Thanks, stuff like that, the wife goes "I found a corn snake nest, four little babies, I took them down the street and let them go."

WTFuck⁉️

They assured us they're harmless and bla bla bla bla like they do about snakes when they think they're harmless. No such thing. They're all deadly to me!

Had to ask google if the mom snake's gonna be pissed and will they come back, shit I never cared to know.

According to the internet we're in the clear but she never shoulda told me. I'm ruined. Haven't been able to go on that side of the house since. There's an exterior basement access there, too, I need to change the hinges on the door.

Those hinges can fuck right off.

Hahah that’s shit man. They just want to give you a lick!

Very cool what happens when you go and see it! Though this potentially sets the scene for a typical horror movie, I expected to see a hillbilly with a chainsaw running out from behind the cabin with a squirrel in his mouth! Probably the bastard child of Master Lones-dowel-who fiddled with one of the plantation workers and had to keep his love child a secret. Now he roams the woods living off the land and has no people skills because he spent most of his wife tied up in the cabin, practically raised by the local wildlife.

I do really like the picture of the bridge though.

It was the bridge that persuaded me to take notes. We really were just killing time. Te more I killed, the more I saw. Not chainsaw.

Hello, you. Sure do appreciate you keeping an eye on me. And your extended version of Lones was visible. I almost forgot all about ssssssnakes!

Thank you.

Many years ago I met a wise old man in Antigua by the name of Glentis Cole. He took me on a ride around his island and we stood atop a hillside by a pile of old stones and he told me that this was his grandmother's house and where he'd been born. The whole area had been a sugar plantation where she'd been brought as a slave to work.

That night he came over and we sat in a small bar on a beach, the moonlight dancing on the water, the sound of reggae wafting through the air and the stench of rum on our breath and I asked him.

"How do you deal with knowing that your family were forcibly removed from their homes, half way around the world to be used as slaves?"

He said to me, "Look around you, boy. You work in an office for 50 weeks a year in a cold, grey city and save up to come here to my home for 2 weeks. Thanks to the sacrifices of my Grandma, I live in the most beautiful place in the world as a free man and want for nothing. I'm sure my ancestors left behind in Africa weren't so lucky. Slave trade was evil but even from evil came some good. I am a lucky man. I have no axe to grind"

We stayed in touch until his son emailed me 8 years ago to let me know that he died aged 87. I never forgot our conversations. Real humanity.

Nice to Atlas back to full health.

Best wishes to the three of you, have a great weekend :-)

Edit. Took down the photo is all. Assuming you saw it = }

I have 87 on my arm. My music arm, the love one, my other one's fear. I haven't shared that with anyone on here yet. You got to me.

Chilling. I would've loved to chill with Glentis. You're a lucky dude. I've heard a lot of cool stories by a lot of cool people, all very different people. I've never hung out with someone with roots as close to slavery as your friend.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing. Dude, I shit you not, my autocorrect had Sharon Fox instead of sharing. I don't know who that is. Hold please...

This chick iGuess. Never heard of her. Hm, can't explain that one. Nah.. This didn't just get awkward.

I did :-)

It's cool how you read things here and they trigger fading memories back to the fore. For that, I thank you :-)

Hi @dandays, a lovely walk at first, but then the pityful graveyard with unmarked graves. How cruel can man be, unthinkable, despicable and tragic that people were once regarded as work mules. Still happens today in a different way, just not legalized.
Back to the walk, that cottage looks very mysterious but, I'm also terrified of snakes so would not have explored that either.
Our adopted cat Poe brought in a half-dead but still wriggling, baby snake into the living room one night, I just about freaked!
I hope Pura's 'tune-up' went well!
Have yourself a good weekend @dandays 💖

Tune-up is even funnier when you say it. = }

Hello Lizelle. I'm not sure if that trail continued in the other direction and I ended up in the middle of it or I found the end of it. Love it when things work out the way they're supposed to.

I would flip if the cat brought in a snake. Pura's only seen me see one snake, one time. I stood on top of a picnic bench. True story. Pura chased it away. I can't handle them.

Thank you, young lady.

Haha, I can just see you standing there, balancing on the picnic bench, but the poor snake probably got a bigger fright!
Our domestic worker once found a long grass snake underneath a couch in our living room. Fortunately, we'd not left for work yet, and hubby would not kill it and he somehow managed to get it into a bottle which I had to hold in the car so he could drop it off in the bush halfway to work!!! I was freaking out! Sat with my feet curled up on the couch for a long while after that!
Me and snakes also ain't friends so I know exactly how you must have felt!

O-M-Y. Grass snake? Awe, how cute. They're all starving, venomous mother boa constrictor's protecting their eggs to me.

Under the couch?!

Haha cute??? Whether they're poisonous or not I don't want them near me😳

There he is! Haven't seen you in a while. I hope you're good?

I know this. I practically got killed by one once

I'd honestly love to hear this story😂

We never can tell were our legs take us but sometimes it's best to go with the flow. This was actually a nice place with an intriguing historical backup. I love history.
.

That house though, was it built in the 18th century? Because it looks pretty new to me, alongside the shiny stone.

Yes, the original is 18th century but you're right, according to what I read that day, it's had a handful of remodels and renovations over the years.

Hello. Always a pleasure to see you. I don't mean to stay away so long, I enjoy this. I'm busier than an auctioneers toothbrush these days with a 6 month old puppy. She's such a great dog. Totally heart her. I'm loving every minute of it. If I don't stop myself now I'll go on and on and on and on and..

Thanks for keeping up with me.

Flattered you asked. Let me know what you think.

IC King Park Where I Nearly Fell Prey To A Boa Constrictor.

That's a relief because I was about to begin doubting that that building looked that way from the inception.

I loved the snake story by the way. A mixture of fear and more fear.. condense.

= } Thank you.

How are you with snakes? From what I've figured out, people can either tolerate snakes or spiders, not both.

Spiders don't bother me. At all.

Ohhh, spiders are not so terrifying and as for snakes, as far as I avoid them (and they avoid me), I'm good.

I had a similar confrontation with snakes but mine was in the night. One can only imagine. I think that was the last time I physically saw a snake so the fear for snakes isn't so intense.

Pardon me, but what is a footstone?

There was a bridge. And another turn. I should take a picture of that bridge and put it on the cover I thought.

Then I thought about the cemetery with headstones you can't see unless they're circled in red and thought I'll probably put that one on the cover when off in the distance of this seemingly middle of nowhere footpath stood a middle of nowhere structure.

Your brain on social media.

Nice bridge. Depressing about the headstones.

I hate SNAKES!

I will never forget this about you. Never.

I practically got killed by one once.

I need to hear the snake story here. All. The. Details. That poem speaks volumes about how snake scared you were.

My favourite part is the bird poop. Pretty cool path killing time walk.

No relation to Alicia Silverstone if that's you're getting at. Or Fred Flinstone.

Your brain on social media.

"Guilty."

I deleted an entire section where I basically summarized those footstones. The verbiage on that Slave Cemetery nomenclature is written in so much uncertainty; around 6-10... approximately 1800... about 60 years... Whereas dates and names are all over the place about Lones; when they got there, how long, when they donated the property, why, no detail is missing, even the making of each brick—dot dot dot.

You've seen it, this one, remember? You talked shit about my cover image enhancing.

Very nice to see you here, thank you. I appreciate you consuming my killing. Got a notification you put one up. En route. <3

No relation to Alicia Silverstone if that's you're getting at. Or Fred Flinstone.

That's not what I was getting at. I've never heard of a "footstone" and still don't get why it's used, etc. Bizarre the way it's written, sounds like livestock almost. What do I know though? Nothing. I only know about Irish slavery.

"Guilty."

😂 Equally guilty.

even the making of each brick—dot dot dot.

That's got to be such exciting reading.

Yes I saw that one. It's what came to mind immediately when I saw SNAKES I didn't see here.

You talked shit about my cover image enhancing.

I was using reverse psychology.

En route. <3

Reverse psychology is the funniest thing I read all day.

Alright, cool, now I'll that resonate for a year.

Reverse psychology is the funniest thing I read all day.

Think of it as a dog barking up the wrong tree the wrong way with the wrong end on the wrong day in the wrong week.

Meant to mention I saw this depressing tag and cried profusely and pathetically:

I've always tried to keep my #tags #partofthe #story.

I clicked on each tag. I was disappointed twice (definitely devastatingly disappointing days 'o dan). Third one was a story of stories.

Hi you 👋🏻😊

Does look like a great walk 😎 beautifully green and you came across some interesting finds.
I did see the stones even before you circled them 😉
Guess what… the movers picked up our stuff last Wednesday. We returned the rental Friday and now at the in-laws 500 something miles down south, until we hop on the ferry Saturday… almost there 😎

Have a great new month and enjoy your day 👋🏻
!ALIVE

You must be excited. Congratulations.

Alright, you can level with me now, it's just you and I here. Whch of the following describes you best? Excited to get your own walls or excited to vacate the in-laws?

I am truly… can’t wait for the next step and all the adventures there 😊
Thank you kindly!

Ok ok… I still have to say; excited to get own walls… this is one step closer to them… the next rental. Once there… we start looking for those walls 🏡
😉

iHeart hindsight.

Ireland, correct? Sorry if I screwed that up. What part; north'ish, south'ish? Before you say where I know one thing about it. It's raining. <3

Yep… you are correct. The only one we could move quickly too and both of us didn’t needed a visa.
We go to the west coast to be precise… it comes very close to the west of Scotland.
They call it the Wild Atlantic Way 😎 it’s stunning too. I am really looking forward to it @dandays 😊
We arrive Sunday 🚗⛴️🚗
And you are right again… it does rain 🌧️ but we are prepared, like we were in Scotland. It didn’t bother us that much after hot and humid southern Spain. We love the fresh ness… we can breathe again.
Have a nice day 😊👋🏻

Wow it's sad that the slaves didn't even get some respect after their passing.. A simple nameless rock for head and toe. Still can't grab my head around people treating others like they did with slaves. I do wonder if the current greenhouse workers here in Spain get better treatment sometimes, when I pass these tiny houses it's close to looking at slums, in the middle of all of these you will find a gigantic house usually, probably the owner.

Thanks for sharing that walk though, it was nice and green :) And of course for not leaving out your beauty!

Hope you're good!

Been so long since I did it I just killed a bunch more minutes trying to find it.

You're most welcome. Thank you.

I'm glad you mentioned it. Now I can tell you about the section I deleted where I basically summarized what you said. How in that short experience I know all about the Lones and how the property was donated to the county to preserve; I got dates, times and names.

But even on the nomenclature in front of the Slave Cemetery, the language is so vague with less than descriptive verbiage like 6-10 salves.. Probably around 1800.. Around 60 years..

Well, thank you! What a nice gesture to send that!

And guess great minds think alike, no?

That was a nice walk for you and Atlas, hi there @dandays. I read this when it first came out but didn't have time to jaw with you.

Looks like the weather has improved by you, nice and green there also. That plantation was something huh? It was creepy to me to see those tiny stones with no markings on some of them. Slavery was a terrible thing; I don't know how the slave owners could sleep at night. I hope they all had nightmares. 😆

So, things are good by you? I hope you and Pura are well. Do you guys have any trips planned or are you going homeowner gardener on me? hahaha

Anywho, have a great night.

Not for awhile at least. It was a lot of fun while it lasted. But we've changed gears farm-mom. Now it's all about Atlas and getting excited to send for Knight. That's the males name. Pura's been shopping for a second house lately too. Traveliving taught us a lot.

Look closer, you're pink, not white.

Tell a pink cop that.

Clearly, you're out of touch with both where I live and modern life.

Why are you talking to them in the first place?

I stumbled into an old graveyard awhile back while touring the middle of nowhere on the dirtbike. Seemed so peaceful until I took a closer look at the stones. Must have been a illness because many died the same year, many young. One stone for entire families in some cases.

Thats trippy. The scenarios are endless. A busted dam. Freezing temps. Probably not an archery trained Woolley mammoth though.

Whaddup. Randy Rhodes's tomb is still probably the fanciest thing I've seen at a cemetery. It's in Inland Empire. We were kids. Someone said the Earp brothers were buried there so we went over there. They are. But, so is Randy Rhodes.

Big ol huge massive thing. Like this response.

This wasn't like a well kept historical sight or something like that, so I have no clue. It was in the prairies and much of that history deteriorated. They built and lived in sod houses for instance. Cold, famine. Both. Who knows...

What bike were you on?

At that time it would have been a 2006 Honda crf450r.

I might've came back just now hoping it said CR 500. Dude, member those things?!

Yeah I remember those. How could you forget?!

So you hate snakes, maybe seeing more of them will help you get over your fear.😄

What is up my man? Sweed visits suck said no one ever.

Just about a month ago, we had some landscapers out, dressing up some groundwork for us. I didn't see, was told, about the nest of corn snakes they found. I was assured they're harmless and I guess they released them down the street somewhere.

Harmless.. I've heard'em called all kinda things. They're all deadly to me. Ain't been able to go outside in shorts since!!

At least you can use them. I got over 10k of those points I haven't been able to use since I'm not sure when. Last year some time.
